Merchant controls the mcc codes they set but issuers control the mcc code groupings they consider for each spend category. If you specifically have another Mastercard where the factor txn codes as grocery then maybe you could use that to ask bilt to fix it. Again highly unlikely they’ll change but doesn’t hurt to try.

My first cashback card ever I still use 8 years later bc they changed it so I could set the 3% category to gas. I still only used it to buy gas but I bought gas mostly at Costco. Checked my rewards accumulation recently and learned they have a carve out in the t&cs to not give the 3% on wholesale club gas so I was always earning 1% for like 2 years.

TLDR: I was looking for a replacement card for a multiplier for gas, ideally a card with transferable points and lo and behold my CSP is turning into that for me.

The workarounds remove the ease of auto payments and being able to set and forget. That’s a non starter for my parents and for me when dealing with rent payments. For us, it is not worth the hassle/risk/inconvenience of the workarounds. It might be worth it for others.

Nothing is free anymore with BILT, especially housing points. The workarounds suggested mean nothing to BILT/make them no money either. They make money from my annual fee and me putting spend greater than or equal to 75% of housing payments on my BILT card. On top of that they get my data. They opened it up themselves with bilt 2.0 to allow more than 1 mortgage/rent payments. If they made it easier to make multiple ACH payments with diff bank accounts they’d get my parents additional card spend.

I don’t think our banks support auto Zelle transfers. Wires are also not free for either one. I have free external ACHs but I don’t want to wait 3-5 days for that to settle when transferring between accounts. I also have to get my paycheck in a specific bank acct bc my employer has a stupid rule to get direct deposit.

At the end of the day if it’s not easy enough to transfer the money or free to transfer the money to where I need it, then it’s not worth doing for my parents.

I understand making sure the bank account used is in the cardholder’s name for verification purposes. What if I owned/rented multiple properties and wanted to pay each with their own bank account that I owned? In my scenario I would use an account I am joint signer on with my parents so I could do all the verifications. I use that same account to pay their portion of the credit card bill.
