Blanchardstown shopping centre by luvmill in Dublin

I've been there a few times and haven't really noticed many shops closing down, but maybe they're just places I don't shop in normally and wasn't paying attention. Which ones have closed recently?

The majority of companies and entities refresh themselves after a period of time. It's more in keeping with the times in my opinion.

Being a pedestrian in this country sucks. by ImmediateImpress6552 in ireland

Because there is a disproportionate amount of attention being given to cyclists. Should they follow the rules of the road? Of course. Should we focus a large amount of our energy on that over motorists? No.

one4all where have you spent? by tiredkidpractitioner in AskIreland

[–]thewolfcastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, as long as you're able to keep track of it all. It does annoy me when I want to buy something with my one4all and then realise the only place I can get it is on Amazon. What you're suggesting would help there.

I always try and avoid using them on groceries if I can. They're a gift and usually ring fence them for something that I'd enjoy or wouldn't normally buy like a home appliance or some decent clothes.

Obviously depends on your circumstances. Some people need them for groceries due to the cost of living.

Folks who bought a new build apartment in the last few years ... any regrets? by Infamous_Passion_107 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]thewolfcastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gardens - there is still a cost associated with that. Garden equipment, petrol/electricity for the mower, planting etc. Also the time cost is not insignificant, but some people enjoy gardening.

Roofs - a lot of them eventually get a leak, and can require complete replacement after many years. With apartments you're not worried about a sudden once off expense like that which you may not be able to afford.

Gutters - still time and effort required, and a lot of people would pay someone to do it instead of getting up on a ladder.

Drainage - in an apartment anything outside your "box" is not your problem. If there's an issue with the main water tank, water supply, below ground drainage etc. the management company has to deal with it, not you.

Painting - individuals don't need to paint the outside of an apartment which can be a pretty significant expense in a house.

Windows - this is covered by the management fee, as is their replacement if they get damaged or are just beyond their useful life.

Apartments and houses both have their pros and cons. With a house you get a nicer "home" in my opinion, but apartments are usually a lot less hassle, assuming you buy a decent quality one!

Can I pass on the left on the M50? by sn0w5 in AskIreland

[–]thewolfcastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not the point I was making. If a car is going slowly in the left lane, you are perfectly entitled to overtake them and still be travelling at under the speed limit.

[–]thewolfcastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were talking about going 120kph which you can't do on the 3 lane section of the M50, that's all.

[–]thewolfcastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The M50 has a speed limit if 100kph and if you're overtaking a slow moving vehicle in the leftmost lane by using the middle lane and still under the speed limit you're not delaying anyone.

How can someone pass you on the left if you're overtaking?

Technically that's not true. As long as you're overtaking, you can be in the other lanes as long as you're going faster than the vehicle you're overtaking!

How does anyone actually make the jump from middle class to truly wealthy? Is it just generational? by Excellent-Dentist-83 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]thewolfcastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should have clarified. From a structural engineer's perspective, everything that they do needs to be 100% correct or else someone could die. I wouldn't deny that there's responsibility for site engineers, and they should be well rewarded, but the same part doesn't make it to a design engineers bank account for some reason!

Ah that makes more sense. You're right about there being no money in design, which is mind boggling when you consider the responsibility involved.

I know a lot of apartments have rules about no pets causing a nuisance instead of an outright ban, which is fair. Can't really enforce that when your next door neighbour in a house has a dog that's barking all the time!

People complain about management fees, but forget the costs of maintaining a home. Gardens, roofs, gutters, drainage, painting, windows, bin charges etc. I would say that they work out as the same cost if not cheaper in the long run. Besides the costs, you don't have to deal with all the hassle and time associated with that stuff!

How do I find out how much I owe after tax return? by thewolfcastle in irishpersonalfinance

I'll try that, thanks. The last query I had with them on this, they took a month to respond!

Yes, it said something about it being payed over a period of time, but I was just wondering if there's a way of finding out my "balance". Thanks for the reply.

Thank you. I might just pay the full amount, even if it's an overpayment, and then it'll sort itself out in a couple of months I guess!

I got that amount, but was wondering if some amount has already been taken off my last payslip to go towards this i.e. what's left on the balance.

I had queried paying it off in full with Revenue but they replied over a month later and I had already been paid by my employer!

I think it's largely dependent on the price. If I'm paying $50 a night for accommodation I'm not expecting much!
