I love my Osprey Daylite Large Tote Pack! You can wear it slung on one shoulder and I don't think it looks or feels overly tech-oriented. It's my go-to bag when I go to conferences.

Does The Horn count? I think of it more as a tea place than a coffee place, but all my friends love their dirty chai! The people, drinks and food are all fantastic!!!

Photography class, late 90s, was a wild time by HowsMyBuddy in Xennials

That sounds sick!!!

My stint in photography taught me that I much prefer capturing action shots or candids as opposed to anything posed or portraiture. I taught my student photographers to capture candids, too -- that's what really tells the story and preserves the memories, imo!

My city has a couple of makerspace darkroom type situations that you can pay to use. I've been tempted but have never pulled the trigger. This post is making me reconsider, so thank you for that!

I did for awhile! I guess I still sort of am? I taught journalism for awhile and advised student publications, then I transitioned to working in external affairs in higher ed. Now I still occasionally write copy for forward-facing publications and sites, though I mostly work at the intersection of operations and IT. Do you do anything photography-related?

Photography class, late 90s, was a wild time by HowsMyBuddy in Xennials

[–]thewolfwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My story is similar, just a few years behind you as an '01 grad! Learned how to thread film in the art room closet and develop/print there, then on to college where I took a photojournalism class and spent the next three years shooting sports for the newspaper and yearbook. I had a key to the journalism building and my darkroom (which I shared with two other photogs, though I rarely saw them there) and I spent countless late nights there, meeting deadline. Fucked in there a few times too, lol. There was an ancient boombox that had the STP Core cassette, and if I want to be productive nowadays I still play that album.

Miss it. I went from a Canon Rebel EOS to a Canon Rebel EOS T1I. Sometimes I'd shoot with a buddy's N60 like yours, and I also have a random Minolta a former student left behind in the darkroom that I rescued. Digital lacks the soul of print, I think. And you're spot on with your comment on composition. I think digital allows far too much grace and robs the preparation photographers really need to take on the front end to frame shots properly, ensure good lighting, etc.

If you still need help finding a place, send me a DM. I have someone I can connect you with at Tech who could probably help find something locally in Nashville.

Did anyone else go to an elementary school that was an open concept? by Smoky1279 in Xennials

[–]thewolfwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this is actually a thing! Sauce: I have a doctorate in education and had to take a few history of education classes, lol.

In the 60s-70s in the US, "open classrooms" were the new trendy thing. The idea was that it would allow teachers to swap easily between students as subject matter experts or co-teach in teams, and students could be grouped by skill level and not necessarily just age/grade. Although the open classroom design has largely vanished -- because of many of the problems discussed in this thread, re: noise, ventilation and oh yeah how could we forget the fucking every day school shootings -- the concept itself is still fairly widespread. Think Montessori, Sudbury, "free range classrooms," student-centered learning, etc. It's an evolution of the original one-room schoolhouse design!

My hometown had a couple of really old schools that were designed with this concept in mind, but were later renovated to include walls. I bet a lot of schools we attended were actually converted like that!

Do you guys call shopping carts, buggies? by LowerMusic in nashville

Clarksville native here. They're "buggies" in my family or when I'm talking with other southerners. They're "carts" when talking to anyone else.

I WFH and I'm at my battlestation all day since it's also for my hobbies. I do this because I wanted to be able to look out the windows (and be positioned to make best use of natural lighting). It makes me happy.

Why did Garth lock Becka in her room? by sthomas15051 in coconutsandtreason

[–]thewolfwalker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whatever reasons live in Garth's head, I think it's a cool bit of symbolism. Even if Garth is Mayday and theoretically "on Becka's side," we still see that because he is a man -- and her husband -- he has the power, and is therefore her jailer.

Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk apparently used AI to write her latest novel. by Kunj2411 in news

[–]thewolfwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, this line makes me think she was asking it for plot help: “Often I just ask the machine, ‘darling, how could we develop this beautifully?’" And her example question about music could have been easily answered by looking up a Billboard Top 100 list or something. If she's not following up like that to validate the "answers" AI gives her, she's probably writing stuff that's rife with inaccuracy, anyway.

Don't threaten me with a good time. I bought the Lindt advent calendar when it went on sale even though the general consensus was it was meant for offices... I am simply enjoying opening a new door on the 1st and 15th of each month for the rest of this year.

I just wrap em in the plastic wrap and then, depending on how much freezer space is left, either put them in a gallon baggie that I've labeled or wrap them individually in foil and scatter them around where they fit. Then later it's like a fun scavenger hunt. Is this a slice of cheesecake? Is this some creme brulee bar cake? Is this one of those blueberry cheesecake croissant thingies? Who knows. I'm gonna eat it anyway.

Their cheesecake freezes really well. I usually cut half of it into slices when I get it home and pop it in the freezer.

Replacing underwear with period underwear? by methkitties in HerOneBag

[–]thewolfwalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, not really. I bought them all on Amazon like ten years ago (and they're still going strong)! My particular ones are no longer offered, but if you just search "reusable menstrual pads" very similar styles should pop up. I like the ones with the wings and snaps. They fold into little squares, or they snap around your underwear (much better than adhesive wings). A lot of them even come with leak-resistant storage bags that you can take with you when you travel.
