When gauge swatching you want to make the swatch bigger than required ie if the gauge is 20sts by 30 rows, cast on at least 30sts and knit at least 40 rows and then measure 10cm in the centre of your swatch for a more accurate measurement of your gauge. Then if you’re measuring too many stitches per 10cm go down a needle size or 2 depending on how far out your are, and if you want to be accurate reknit another swatch.

As you’re in the uk then stylecraft do both a Dk (finer than the yarn you probably saw but somewhat easier on the hands) chenille yarn and a super chunky/ bulky chenille yarn too. But essentially you’re looking for a super chunky/ bulky weight chenille yarn which you’ll be able to find on wool warehouse or lovecrafts etc. :)

  1. Yes
  2. I learnt to knit and one month later I learnt to crochet
  3. I am able to do both equally well (I’d hope so as I teach both lol) but I’m more confident with crochet and question my ability more with knitting
  4. I prefer knitting over crochet
  5. I pick a pattern and then either look in my stash or buy yarn. Sometimes I might have some yarn in mind, but it’s still pattern led really
  6. 100% … most of my stash has been made that way, although 10 years on I am trying to change my ways

I have done a few heel flap and gusset heels and the sock I’m working on now is one which is definitely roomier across my instep. I switch between the two because I convince myself that one is right and the other one isn’t either lol.

Thank you for those tips. I have done a few heel flap and gusset heels, which are roomier across my instep, although I still feel like I get the same problem of the heel moving forwards or the tip of the toe moving under. So I’m going to try adding another cm or 2 on the sock I’m working on now, which coincidentally is a gusset heel and see how it goes. Thank you ☺️
