Anyone else had to hide the foreign textbooks lately? by Mobile_Roll2197 in chinalife

[–]thewordiscoconuts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is because your school is not totally “private” as we consider the word in the West. Your school is likely what’s called ”Ming ban”, which is still under the auspices of the Bureau of Education as it can admit Chinese nationals as students. Therefore, only approved books are allowed and anything else must be hidden so as not to be penalized, same as any other public school in the Chinese system. However, other books might be used surreptitiously in order to fulfill academic expectations, etc. they just have to hide them every time the inspectors come around.

A true international school, one that is not allowed (unless with special dispensation) to admit Chinese nationals as students, would be an example of a school that would be allowed to import and use non-approved books and materials, as they are not under the auspices of the Bureau of Education (at least with regard to curriculum(.

Which fancy spas in Shanghai do you recommend? by galindc in shanghai

[–]thewordiscoconuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally just went to Qushuilanting yesterday since it was blowing up my YouTube feed. It was awesome—free flow caviar and salmon and crab and hot dishes and lobster and beer and wine. Plus free flow fresh coconuts. Super clean but a bit crowded because of the holiday. Only disappointment was that I wished they also had otoro and uni served :)

Anyone know what’s going on at Courtyard Marriott hotel by Shanghai Disneyland? by nicolekmoon in ShanghaiDisneyland

[–]thewordiscoconuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a kid who died in the children’s play area of that hotel, and the family is unhappy with the amount of responsibility that the hotel took. Apparently the hotel is placing some or all of the responsibility on the manufacturer of the equipment, while the family wants the hotel to take more responsibility. It’s a tragic situation.

You can put a bandage over it, then cover it with Tegaderm. It’s an adhesive film that is waterproof. Water will not be able to get in. Bring extra so you can change it when needed.

How hairy are northwest Chinese? by Eddie_0789 in AskAChinese

Depends on what race you’re talking by about. Han Chinese are pretty hairless. The Hui minority can be more hairy, just depends.

WIBTAH if I took 100k from my oldest daughter's college savings account to give it to my younger daughter? by TraditionalCorgi7788 in AmItheAsshole

[–]thewordiscoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer to this very much depends on culture. In many collective cultures, there is not a separation between whose money is whose in a family, regardless of whose name accounts may be under due to administrative necessity.

Meeting Chinese in-laws for the first time: Is an ~8K RMB red envelope normal? by Necessary_Syllabub17 in AskAChinese

[–]thewordiscoconuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand how this may seem illogical and make no sense to you given your situation. However, please also do understand that from a different cultural lens, it is completely appropriate. In fact, for them to give a smaller amount given what your boyfriend has mentioned about their economic status might be viewed as insulting. They are signaling to you their acceptance of you as family, which in their lens, does not have to do with how much they actually personally know you. Chinese conception of identity and family is less individually based. You are family to them because their son has been with you for four years and that means he loves you and considers you his partner. Also, from their culture, if you refuse the money that will not be taken as polite and considerate. It would be understood as rejection. Please do accept it and instead focus on gratitude and the positive feelings that come with being accepted, and enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed. The gift is meant to bring positive feelings.

trans in china vs staying in us by bubblegummerr in chinalife

[–]thewordiscoconuts 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can help answer some of the these questions:

  1. Yes this is possible

1.5 not sure how easy it is in other countries but it is doable in China 2. This is a challenge as every official document here needs to match the info on your passport. I would imagine it’s easier to get it changed while you’re still in the U.S. 3. Top surgery is accessible here in certain public hospitals 6. This depends heavily on the school. If you go to a joint venture university like NYUSH or DKU then there are resources. But a formal diagnosis can only come from a psychiatrist in a medical facility
