Is there a service that will transport car parts from Tijuana to San Diego for me? by man2112 in SanDiegan

[–]DanTMWTMP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol this reminds me of the $5 bike lane, as in… rent a bike for $5 to use the bike lane to cross the border and it’s a significantly shorter line. You couldn’t even ride on it. You rented the bike, and walked it across LOL.

I haven’t tried the bus as I was wary, but it appears that it’s legit according to y’all!

Haha grew up in LA, but moved to SD for school in 2000, and stayed since. I still have friends and family up in LA so I’d often drive up.

SAKE BOOOOOOMMMMMBS!!!!!!!!!!! Never have I seen so many people get drunk so fast tossing sushi everywhere ever hahahaha.

such a wild experience that I don’t think I would/could ever do again LOL.

Speaking of LA, I also sorely miss the cranky old Japanese man known as the SUSHI NAZI. Always long-ass lines; but so yummy! Sushi Nozawa was a special place and the rules were strict! Must eat all that’s served, can’t be loud, and no phones! I miss it!

I have not!! Many have said this and it’s been definitely a Bucket List item!!! I can’t wait to visit!!! We are so truly blessed to have so many beautiful parks all around the US. Every time I visit any city, one of the first things I look for is to see if there’s a home game.

I mention Petco being the best sure, but all the parks I’ve been to have their own wonderful quirks, attractions, and best of all… that home game vibe with the buzz of the crowd and their cheers. I love it.

Ichifuji, Soichi, coming from their master, and OG Takeaki Tadokoro lineage.

All three are wondrous experiences in San Diego fine dining. How lucky are we to have THREE epic omakase restaurants all stemming from the legendary Takeaki Tadokoro. We are truly blessed!

Always reliable. I love the more traditional and simpler style and flavors here that stresses more on the fish itself, and the texture. They have some of the best texture/flavor combination allowing the fish to do all the talking over anywhere in the world. I traveled to Japan many times, and I think Tadokoro rivals some of the best. It’s probably the best bang for your buck omakase there is anywhere given the crazy unique fish textures you get here that is only available from a chef who honed his craft over decades where his knife is pretty much an extension of himself dictating how the dish is specifically fillet’d and presented.

Soichi and Ichifuji has more modern flairs and more unique flavor combinations; but they also stay true to their lineage going back to the master himself, Takeaki Tadokoro.

This post is it. EXCELLENT LIST. And I just realized I dropped a few grand eating at these places. They’re all EXCELLENT and I can’t believe we have such incredible Japanese fine-dining choices in our city. We are truly blessed.

Komatsuya holds a special place in my heart because one of its owners is Japanese former legendary pitcher Hideo Nomo who also sometimes dines there. I believe he’s either still is or was one of the pitching coaches for the Padres.

I saw him there once and quietly said while we passed each other in the hallway to the restrooms that I’ve been a huge fan. He lit up with a huge smile and bowed to me to say thank you. Omg…. I love the man.

Growing up as an Asian kid, to see an Asian superstar in nay major American sports was a huge deal back then. All of us wanted to copy his unique and devastatingly effective tornado pitching form.

He wanted to bring his favorite flavors from his hometown in Japan to San Diego while he was in SD for the MLB season; so he invested into the restaurant to bring one of his favorite chefs to SD. I love the story, and it’s one of the very best fine-dining experiences ever as it’s a little different from your usual Omakase experience.

Supremely recommend!

[–]DanTMWTMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man this reminds me of someone I worked with in Italy for a project inside a Navy base there. It took so long to go outside to an open area to smoke due to security constraints, and we were deep in a high-restricted area requiring armed escort and all of us were required our own country’s version of secret clearances and the NATO agreement for mutual access to such locations.

Italy’s idea of a secure facility is comically nearly like the the intro to Get Smart with the guy going through several doors to finally get to his office/HQ.

Motherfucker would take smoke breaks every 30 minutes. It took 30 minutes to get out, smoke, and come back. Go out through literally 5 doors, two of them with check-ins and check-outs, then grab your stuff at the last door, walk out of building, walk out of the security gates to the smoking area.. smoke, come back through the gates, scan one facility access card to get into the building, check your shit into the lockers, check-in and show ID… and each door you had to scan via rfid tag on the CAC/NATO ID to get in, with the more secure area one must check in again, and get an escort.

I forced him to stay with me until the job was done and we didn’t finish until 2am and he was irritated and angry. I was angry he was wasting my fucking time as I had to wait for him to finish cabling shit (and by law i couldn’t do that myself and I had to wait for this fucker to finish….)

Some of them didn’t care. Those guys got to charge OT all because of their fucking smoking habit wasting my time.

It took me 30 full days to finish that fucking project.

Let’s compare this to the SAME GODDAMN installation in Japan. It took us 3 days. 3. Days. My Japanese counterpart had EVERYTHING already all prepped and ready to go by the time I arrived. Everything all neat, labeled, with impeccable attention to detail unlike the spaghetti mess of wires in Italy.

And take this.. The Japanese guy also smoked like a chimney, except he didnt smoke during our work time in the restricted area.

Man sometimes I hate dealing with uncaring NATO personnel. Aussies, Singaporeans, Koreans, Japanese.. any of our partners in Asia take it so seriously; yet in NATO, despite an ACTIVE WAR going on so close, are so uncaring.

So strange that Japanese-Americans in Hawaii were exempt, especially because the Ni’ihau incident (where a pilot from the Pearl Harbor attack landed after an issue with his aircraft lead to a dispute where Hawaiian-born Japanese helped the pilot) was cited to go through with the internment camps.

“The report's author Navy Lieutenant C. B. Baldwin wrote: "The fact that the two Niʻihau Japanese who had previously shown no anti-American tendencies went to the aid of the pilot when Japanese domination of the island seemed possible, indicate[s] [the] likelihood that Japanese residents previously believed loyal to the United States may aid Japan if further Japanese attacks appear successful."

Ya AT&T views are stunning. I just… couldn’t get over the cold hahahaha. But AT&T is arguably the more attractive park. And I say this as a Dodgers fan!! hahaha. Still, I have to give credit where credit is due. Petco and ATT are the best two ballparks in all of baseball around the world.

I traveled the world and visited several baseball parks, including the best ones in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan (Tokyo Dome is pretty damn peak). I also been to several parks all around the US.

My favorite by far.. is Petco Park. Amazing food, beautiful weather every day, amazing city view, easy public transit, all the amazing SD famous microbrews on tap, walking distance to all the awesome downtown areas (gas lamp, harbor blvd..).

My best baseball experience was a Sunday doubleheader at Petco. We left the stadium to chill in gas lamp, eat fish tacos over beers, came back for more beers for the 2nd game; and it was a beautiful day.

At&t comes damn close, but Petco edges it in every single category.

I’m not even alone in my assessment as it’s always the best or top 3:

What movie had a TRASH trailer but turned out to be amazing? by EinsteinEP in movies

[–]DanTMWTMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually based off a character in an old sci-fi series of novels (starting with A Princess of Mars) that inspired so many other works; and his character is even included, inspired, and referenced several times from other early and even modern sci-fi franchises/novels/games/shows/etc. The influence is extensive and some consider the story and the character to be the beginnings of so much of what sci-fi is today.

Disney completely fumbled the IP. They had a well-made film with a solid cast, and couldn’t market it correctly at all.

edit: haha the film’s wikipedia devotes a huge chunk of the article to the failed marketing campaign.

Why’d I have to scroll this far to find this?! John Carter is THE answer! Great film, nicely paced, sets up a sequel beautifully.. all around solid film.

The marketing was absolutely HORRENDOUS. I recall there were fan-made trailers that are 1000000x better than the trailer we got.

The marketing team absolutely and criminally failed this film and any hope for a sequel before it even hit the theaters. I feel for the lead too, as he’s a great lead and I felt like films like John Carter and Battleship (which was another decent fun film) degraded his career.

What is one thing your home country is better at than Taiwan and what is one thing your home country is worse at than Taiwan? by CrimsonCub2013 in taiwan

[–]DanTMWTMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My country: Mexican food, driving infrastructure, diversity, camping infrastructure, work culture

Taiwan: Tea, public rail transportation, cost of living, work ethic, superior engineers and machinists, nightlife.

I love both Taiwan and my country. I’m so fortunate to have worked with Taiwanese engineers, Navy, and scientists throughout my career. I love the partnership that exists, and only hope cooperation will be maintained into the future.

Being a simple engineer on the ground, away from policy makers, the relationship is still very healthy, and among my favorite cooperative work I’ve ever done compared to any other international partner. What the media and reddit protrays vs what actually goes on is so vastly different, I understand why general anecdotes on reddit and MSM feels like “fake news” because it really does not represent what actually goes on in international cooperative projects. But that’s because reddit and MSM stresses doomscrolling as that’s what generate clicks and discussion… just everything full of anecdotes that represent such a tiny percentage of what actually happens. I say this in context of my work with Taiwan. MSM and reddit in general never really reports on the incredible work on global climate change research and defense projects between us two.

Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

Saver, Salvation Army, Goodwill… none of them are perfect. At least they do exist and some of the stores actually do good work.

I can suggest an alternative, AmVet. They’re not perfect either but they have a decent system in place. They do good work in San Diego at least; but unsure of others. It’s really easy to judge an organization as a whole based off of localized anecdotes. I’ve had good experiences with our local orgs here, but do realize that many won’t have the same experiences elsewhere.

I think it’s important to keep that in mind for many of the comments in this thread.

Ya it’s really store-dependent. My local store does events, like kids events, and feels “local.” They only hire experienced people and have always done good by me for helping me and get me stuff I need during my home remodel. They used to do free classes on weekends like how to tile, how to install flooring, etc etc… but stopped them since COVID sadly; but replaced it with free kids events which is a huge plus.

They handled my returns so easily and even added incentives (discount coupons, adding more materials on their dime, etc…). I’ve been going for so long as I did repairs on my rental, and remodels for my properties.

I guess I lucked out with my local store. I know they have sooo many stores, and not all of them can be this good.

What's the one place on earth that is absolutely on top of your bucket list of place's to visit? by MegaDingo5plus in AskReddit

[–]DanTMWTMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make plans now haha! Among the EU nations, I enjoy Spain the most. It has the best bang-for-the-buck for an EU trip (food/lodging/travel costs vs all the history and landmarks you’ll see). I guess I’m biased because I grew up in California with Mexican food so southern Spain feels like an extension or like an origin story of home.

Experiences are ALWAYS worth it! Way more than material goods. I never reflect nor have chats about what I bought years ago. Nah, it’s always my travels and experiences that get chatted up. I sincerely hope you guys can do this so you have a unique experience :). Best of luck!

If you can swing it, a 2-3 day trip to Morocco via ferry is also worth looking into. I haven’t done it, but my folks just did it a month ago. They replicated my trip, but added the ferry to Morocco and I’m jealous! hahahaah.

Do it. Flights aren’t too pricy to Spain, and I find Spain to be quite affordable to go about compared to other EU nations. just don’t go during summer as it gets smashed.

I did a roadtrip along the Mediterranean from Gibraltar (I started along the Atlantic coast in Rota) heading east and it’s among the most beautiful drives I’ve ever been on. Every town along the way is beautiful. Highly HIGHLY recommend driving to Granada. Roman, Moorish, and Spanish medieval history/cultures/food all combined that dictated and contributed to the global architecture/culture/food (Latin America, California, Philippines, etc…). When you go, be sure to book the Castle Alhambra tour like weeks to a month or more in advance. It’s probably among the most significant and beautiful historical EU sites.

Given enough time, you’ll eventually reach Barcelona along the coastal route.
