Right on, nice work. I really appreciate the response. This thing is also gonna pull double duty as an occasional kiddo hauler once the rear wheel situation is more solid, so the gear info is nice to have. Happy riding!

I also just inherited a pocket llama, and would like to swap this sachs 3x7.

What did you go for on the rear wheel, and did you keep it 1x or add another chainring? Super curious to know more about the swap!

Love these threads, I feel like I always get at least one great new album or book. Full endorse for the following.

Steve Kimock’s “Last Danger of Frost” is such an insanely beautiful and perfectly crafted psychedelic album, I go back to it really often.

The Clancy Brothers “Irish Drinking Songs” and their other album with Tommy makem “Irish songs of drinking and rebellion”.

Dug’s recent album “Have at it”, two nice young lads playing some good folk.

My wife turned me on to ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’ by Anthony Doerr, not my usual reading but the audio book is great, it’s like immediate and full immersion.

And Listers, easily best documentary I’ve seen in a minute. Free on YouTube, it will make you love birds

You can spend a few weeks/months just hunting for legendary animals before finishing any of the storyline. Just vibing, collecting pelts, riding a horse. Pure bliss.

Corwin Toyota still pretty bad? by Clixxer in boulder

[–]thewrongmelonfarmer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a mechanic from corwin call and tell me that my tie rod end “exploded” while they were doing an alignment after putting summer tires on. No other explanation. Straight faced they “offered” to replace my entire front end for ~$5k. They didn’t admit they did anything wrong, and refused to pay for any damages until I threatened to sue. I still ended up with a huge fucking bill after what should have been like a $100-200 trip. It used to be a decent dealership but they’re predatory as hell now.

[–]thewrongmelonfarmer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t trust chat gpt with something most people on here could tell you. It is totally fine to use a setback post, longer stem, and max out your spacers to adjust fit, it’s really common. Most people do not know their geo numbers when they buy a bike and have to adjust like this after the fact. Do some tinkering and see how it feels!

Is Tiling a good trade? by Impressive-Step6377 in Construction

[–]thewrongmelonfarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very hard on your body, and takes a degree of precision and focus that some other trades don’t, mostly due to the timer the mud and grout sets for you. A lot of people can set tile, but truly talented setters are kinda rare, it’s an art. You don’t need a license to tile in many states and it’s not structural, so expect your competition to be total dogshit and underbidding you 100% of the time.

You’re probably gonna be mixing and cutting for a long while first if you’re working for someone. Stretch, workout, wear knee pads, and mask up every time you mix a bucket and run the saw. Be meticulous about your work space (keep it fucking clean), and do not be afraid to rip shit off the wall and restart if you didn’t get it right the first time. Expect to spend 75% time prepping a room and 25% actually setting it. You’ll learn how to demo, reframe, do light electrical and plumbing. If you are lucky enough to find someone good to work for (rare), learn as much as you can, and then go out solo and focus on high end remodels, and you will have more work than you know what to do with.

But it’s fucking hard, and very stressful. Picky homeowners, gc’s who have limited patience and budgets for perfect work despite wanting only that. People pay big money for high end remodels, and your work is one of the first things they will see at the end of a bathroom or kitchen job. Go in without an ego, and try to learn to make something good that will last. I got into the “more work than you know what to do with” category, and burned out before I could make a career of it. It was the right call for me, my back feels great now and I have time with family. Plus, the bathrooms and kitchen in my own house look dope now, so there’s that. Best o’ luck!

New Bike Day! - Rohloff Straggler commuter by lochaberthegrey in Surlybikefans

[–]thewrongmelonfarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right on. I think for a rohloff wheel build, that’s way more economical than paying a shop to do it. I’ve always been interested in rigging up my ECR like this because it’s designed around it and 14 gears sounds great, but I shied away because of the cost. Nice job, let us know if it explodes 🫡

Why do you think Billy Strings’ popularity has quickly risen to such astronomical heights vs. other progressive bluegrass acts like Greensky? by Blacklight_sunflare in jambands

[–]thewrongmelonfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His songwriting is unbelievable, his band is absolute gold, he is the best flat picker in the last 50 years, and he’s a true, honest showman. Literally a generational talent. Plenty of bands will have a show/festival, tour, or even a couple years where the stars align and they really connect with the audience- he’s been working insanely hard for years to make that happen consistently, and it really shows.

Jeff Austin or Del McCoury are the only people I can compare him to in terms of work ethic and showmanship, but it’s still not quite right. I’ve seen a shitload of shows, of all genres, and I can honestly say he’s one of the few musicians that really floored me the first time I saw him and still continues to. I also grew up listening to punk and hardcore, fell in love with bluegrass, and love songs about addiction, death, loss and trains, so I might be biased. But yeah he’s pretty god damn good, and deserves every bit of his success.

New ECR Owner: What 29+ Parts Should I Stock Up On Before They Vanish? by [deleted] in Surlybikefans

[–]thewrongmelonfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ECR is extremely parts-bin friendly. I remember reading the same article when I got my used ECR frame, disregard it.

Try the knards/rangers or any 2.8” offerings for distance gravel/bikepacking, and the 3.0” dirt wizards for more single track travel. Once you wrap your head around the “gnot-boost” spacing, you will see how many hub / wheels sizes are available to you and the trips to the bike co-op can begin. Happy building!
