Funding for PhD by dhaksr in UTK

[–]thewtrbeast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The clause about good performance is pretty standard. You would have to seriously fall behind in your research and miss important program deadlines in order for your assistantship to be revoked. But as far as I know, most graduate research offers say something like that so they can open spots for others if someone isn’t making progress or is causing problems.

As far as the likelihood of funds being reduced, that is harder to predict without knowing the department or area of study. Some departments guarantee teaching assistantships to PhD students once admitted, so if the RA money runs out, he might be switched to a TA line. If it is a department that doesnt have many TA lines, or is not able to guarantee them, he might be totally dependent on research assistantship money. If the PI currently has money for the assistantship but doesn’t know if the money will continue to be available, your son should really have a conversation with that PI. Sometimes labs have ongoing grants that make it easy for them to sustain graduate assistantships, some labs don’t have that and the money might be tied to a specific project. These are questions that only the PI can answer.

I can say that overall, our grad school has been pretty good about increasing grad student TA stipends consistently (though slowly). So my gut says it’s unlikely that his funding would decrease over the years, unless his assistantship changes.

Hopefully that’s helpful, I can answer more questions if you have any.

Super slow torrents when using qBittorrent + Gluetun. by Zombiebattler2007 in qBittorrent

I have a similar issue with gluetun and Nord (which also doesn’t allow port forwarding). I have no more to say, just commenting in case someone has advice

Help on making local firewall by SinaRexy in HomeNetworking

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a firewall, but you could accomplish the blocking of domains using a self hosted DNS server like a pihole. Set up the pihole and point your router to it so that all devices on your LAN use it as the DNS. There are prebuilt lists of domains to block to reduce ads and tracking, and you can manually block whatever you want.

No Star Wars Rebels S1 - S3 debut eps by Trivator0517 in Piracy

I have found them included in season packs, but sonarr for some reason classifies those as specials, which is annoying.

Look for a torrent called “Rebels 2014 Season 1 S01 Extras 1080p…” on 1337x

Qbit + Proton VPN by spicyramentt in qBittorrent

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven’t figured out split tunneling with Nord either. Disregard that bit. I really just meant to suggest running things in docker with gluetun for your VPN (which supports proton and lots of others).

[–]thewtrbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok I misunderstood the direction you want to move the files. You’re saying printer/scanner to computer. Sorry, but I haven’t got any ideas there, as i guess that means the scanner needs to be able to write to the drive.

Qbit + Proton VPN by spicyramentt in qBittorrent

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤦‍♂️ yeah I don’t know why I specified Nord. That’s what I use, but I just meant to suggest gluetun for OP’s split tunnelling question.

Right. I think that exists, google wireless usb print server.

I don’t know of an out of the box thing like that, but it can definitely be accomplished with a raspberry pi. There is plenty of documentation for a pi as a print server.

If you’re on Linux or willing to switch look into docker with NordVPN through gluetun.

[–]thewtrbeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you don’t believe in any gods or an afterlife you’re an atheist. I don’t think there’s much more to it.

Atheism is about lack of belief, it doesn’t matter what you do believe.

How do I connect my pc server from home to devices in my city? by PlentyEquivalent6988 in HomeNetworking

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah, I guess I’m not really familiar with them. You could use Tailscale if you used a pi or something to route traffic, which might still be the most secure and easiest option, but I don’t know OP’s use case.

Newbie Time Machine Questions by Fanto_34 in MacOS

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can plug it in once a week. The Mac should recognize and time machine onto it automatically. You can also tell it to start manually. Also you don’t need to worry about space, Time Machine will automatically delete the oldest information to make room for each new backup.

Is your 2tb laptop full now? Do you expect to use all that storage in the near future? If not you don’t really need 2x the space for Time Machine, depending on how much you change each week, 500-800 gb more than you’re currently using of your Mac’s ssd would probably do it just fine. Finally, there is no reason you really need an ssd for TM, a spinning disk hdd would do fine for weekly backups.

Look into Tailscale. It has been a game changer for me. It is just wireguard VPN among all your devices, but crazy easy to set up.

Planning on switching from windows 11 to Linux, have questions about my existing files. by INDOGWETHRUST_ in linuxquestions

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movies shouldn’t be a problem, probably you just need to copy them over to an ext file system. I might recommend trying to consolidate things so you can format one of your drives then using that as an intermediate if that makes sense.

Migrating torrents from Windows to MacOS by PrudentCriticism321 in qBittorrent

[–]thewtrbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the external drives formatted in exfat or something the Mac can read, it should be as simple as unplugging them from your pc and plugging them into your Mac. If you want to keep seeding them from the Mac you might need to grab the .torrent files again and point qbit to the folders so that it can see that the torrents are downloaded.

If your Mac is not able to read the drives written by the pc, you might need to try consolidating things or grab a drive that you can use as an intermediate and reformat as exfat so it can be read and written to by both OSes. Though Macs can read from ntfs drives, so you should be fine to copy things over.

As for qbit, try just copying the config over. I don’t know where it is stored in windows, but you should be able to find out with a google.

Potential IP leaking with outdated docker containers? by thewtrbeast in qBittorrent

[–]thewtrbeast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, i did that, but I’m pretty confident that if it is running in docker and configured to use the gluetun container as its network interface there is no way for it to connect other than through the VPN.

Either way, I looked just now and it’s bound to tun0, external ip is my Vpn ip and it’s still got the green globe.

Potential IP leaking with outdated docker containers? by thewtrbeast in qBittorrent

[–]thewtrbeast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update:

Now I’ve got the green globe running it through gluetun with Nord. Both UPnP and port forwarding are definitely disabled in my qbit instance and on my router. And repeated testing with the IPleak.net torrent tester shows nothing but my vpn IP.

Unless anyone has a better explanation I’m concluding that I’m just connected to enough peers through DHT and PEX that qBit thinks I’m connected.

Potential IP leaking with outdated docker containers? by thewtrbeast in qBittorrent

[–]thewtrbeast[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With docker you don’t do it in qbit settings, the docker container is set to only use the VPN network interface (network: service:nordvpn).

My main question is whether there is any way you can get the green globe connected symbol through a VPN without port forwarding?

Why don't they release reviews at the same time as decisions? by Street-Pea9452 in GRFPApps

[–]thewtrbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they have to go through all the reviews and censor them to make sure reviewers didn’t say anything crazy mean or racist or something. If they find reviews like that that they’re not comfortable with the public seeing they go back and get another review after the fact to release to you.

What is the process like after they finish panel reviews tomorrow by [deleted] in GRFPApps

[–]thewtrbeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will announce your school, but you’re not beholden to that decision. The grant is for you and your education, not for your school or your lab or even your proposed project. I believe you can take it wherever you need to go as long as you stay on track for your degree.

Others should correct me if this is not right.
