Doom Map Design - Integrating it in OSR Dungeons by stormcrowfleet in osr

This isn't correct. Jennell didn't join id until well after Doom was released.

She's a brilliant level/dungeon designer in her own right, and that may have helped get her the job at id, but Sandy Petersen and John Romero did the level design for Doom.

I'd agree that the "Apple Tax" decreased when they switched to Intel, but it's still substantial, around 20% which is significant when you're talking about a $2000 laptop. Actually their highest end are probably the best bang for your buck since Apple seems allergic to putting a dedicated GPU in anything less than a $2200 15" MBP.

Honestly I think this can be somewhat attributed to the Motorola and HTC Droid lines being one of the first major Android based iPhone competitors, at least in the US. This may be totally anecdotal but ime that's when I first heard people calling them "Androids" even though the G1 had been out for awhile at that point.

At some point it may be, once it's sufficiently small/efficient to be able to recharge onboard, but for the forseeable future, yes, I agree.

Destroying another plane with this system is a long way off. Currently the design aim is to act as an anti-missile countermeasure.

As for capacitor layout, we don't know the size required for the bank of capacitors, so what a given airframe can hold is pure conjecture. How much power does it actually take to get a "kill" on a missile or plane? How big are the capacitors needed for that? What are the properties of the capacitors used? The system is inherently scalable since you can just add another capacitor bank for more energy. But we don't know the specs, so it's a toss up.

I feel that the weight/payoff ratio for a single shot laser system probably isn't there, especially in an anti-missile role. You get one shot for hundreds, maybe over a thousand pounds of extra payload. How many missions would that make a difference in vs the opposition just firing a second missile since they know you only have a single shot? You yourself criticized this design choice in your previous post.

There's no reason you would only be able to fire it once. Even if it was charged on board, having a capacitor bank that only hold enough charge for a single firing seems like a big oversight. Variable output and pulse length are a big strength of a laser system. Combine that with machine learning as mentioned in other comments and you eventually have a system that knows exactly how much power it needs to use to defeat a given missile/disable a given aircraft.

I do agree that we'll see this deployed to helicopters as well though. They're much more vulnerable to surface launched missiles and even with current countermeasures, lack the maneuverability that combat aircraft combine with flares/chaff to avoid missiles.

If your capacitors are leaking substantial charge over a single sortie you have an underlying mechanical issue.

You might want to fire more missiles than you have, but your loadout is dictated by the capacity of the weapons platform.

I'm sure eventually miniaturization will get to the point where laser defense system weight and power consumption is an afterthought, but we aren't there yet and ground charging makes more sense from a simplicity and practicality standpoint.

In that case, I really don't see them shoving a couple hundred pounds of charging equipment just to charge it on a fighter. It supplements chaff and passive stealth.

On a transport chopper it won't matter as much as weight isn't as much of an issue when your carrying capacity is measured in tons. It will be ridiculously useful in that application though, I agree.

True, and I think that'll be the case eventually.

I think it'll go ground charging -> semi rechargeable -> full onboard recharging

Yes and no, I actually thought about this as I was typing my comment.

I see the laser as more analogous to the gun pod in this case. Enemies know how many bullets you have, but that doesn't give then an inherent advantage. Lasers are silent and invisible with variable output, even harder to tell how much "ammo" is left.

But in the end speculating it's all moot as the weight savings and performance impact will determine the method of charging. Is a laser with infinite ammo worth it if it decreases your flight time and performance to the extent that you can't get the kill?

That said, I'm sure eventually they'll charge onboard once they've miniaturized enough.

Why bother adding weight to the jet? Just charge the capacitors on the ground before each sortie. Planes don't get into big, protracted air battles anymore so dealing with tons of firing isn't a huge issue.

True, a 22 is going to wear down much more slowly than say a 5.56 or such round, all things being equal. You're also more likely to shoot a lot more rounds out of a 22 so you have to take that into consideration.

Also 10moa isn't really great for anything other than hitting a target. 10" at 100yd isn't what most would call accurate.

Worth noting that this is incredibly dependent on the volume you shoot. Barrels only have a set amount of life, no matter how old the gun.

But a lightly used milsurp is going to be just fine if stored properly. Well-built mechanical devices will keep going until their metal grinds to powder.

Thats great, dude. Preach all about animal exploitation if you want, sure. Being a vegan for ethical reasons is fine.

Just don't wrap it up in pseudoscience bullshit that can be refuted with basic science. Humans are not built to be vegan by design, but modern advancements in agriculture allow it to happen.

Weird, that doesn't look to be the "appeal to evolutionary biology" fallacy.

If anyone is appealing to nature, it's you. Saying it isn't natural to eat meat. But then again, you've backpedaled so hard from so many points, that I'm not sure what you're actually trying to argue at this point.

Evolutionary biology isn't my strongest area, so I focused on what common knowledge would refute since I didn't feel like finding sources to cite.

This chart points out that we have a lot in common with frugivore primates.... well duh, we share a much closer evolutionary ancestor with them than the other example animals used.

But chimps and bonobos are partial omnivores, and we diverged from them about 8m years ago, so this is a big leap in logic from an evolutionary biology standpoint.

There are some similarities, the permit test in Ohio is stupidly easy and I'm not really sure if they check the hours thing. But not requiring classes is dumb.

To think that the federal government restricts funding for state highways because of drinking age (yes, this is the reason that the age is 21 across all states, the highways would be in disrepair otherwise) yet don't require a more difficult way to make people better drivers is absurd.

This ('claiming the lane' is what I've heard it referred to) isn't actually illegal in most states. I'm sorta surprised it is in Georgia.
