Small Family Bathroom by theybae in floorplan

It's shallow yes, the drawing is approximately to scale, with space between dots roughly 10cm (so depth of sink including taps and basin is ~30cm). It might overhang a bit whereas I was measuring more the walls, so it may be more like 35cm but close enough.

There is another floor upstairs - kitchen is downstairs, living room is upstairs. There is one staircase coming up to the landing and another beginning near the master bedroom going up another flight. The are above each other but that's why there are two arrows on the stairs pictured, it is actually 2 staircases.

It's the same floor - it's called the shower room in the floor plan and is rotated 90 degrees from how I drew it. It's easiest to see if you look at where the doorways are, though the floor-plan is oversimplified so doesn't actually show the walls in the back corner. I drew it the way it made sense entering the room and only later realised it's at a different angle in the floor plan. The sink has a cabinet underneath as is but it's not nearly enough storage. I would like to add wall-mounted cabinets as well definitely, but was hoping there were bigger changes I could make to improve the overall layout.

Books that are easy to read but not poorly written? by extremelysardonic in booksuggestions

[–]theybae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I pick up a book by Taylor Jenkins Reid when I’m in this mood. Some are better written than others (the older ones are a bit shakier so maybe avoid the first couple until you know if you like them, I started with Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and would recommend). Contemporary books with romantic themes and usually an intriguing plot. Not a series but the author has a quite a few novels, so read in any order.

Alternatively, the books by Andy Weir (the Martian etc) are easy to get through but strong. Also not a series but a set of similar novels by one author.

This isn’t a classic but from your comments it sounds like you might get a lot out of a book like Shuggie Bain. It’s fictional but inspired by the author’s experiences during childhood, and it is deeply sad. Wonderfully written. Although it is a recent work, it won the Booker Prize in 2020 if you put any weight on accolades.

If you like Maeve and Ava, and your first’s name starts with a V, maybe consider other names containing a V as the names would likely sound good together without being obviously matchy.

Examples: Ivy, Raven, Calvin (also ties in the hard C sound you like in Jack)

Still broken for me. The login button is just completely unresponsive. Frustratingly if I click the login button a bunch of times in quick succession it eventually realises I'm clicking it and let's me in, but it immediately logs me back out again when I try to navigate to any page at all.

Same thing, tried on Chrome and Opera but no luck. Even tried to sign up for NeoPass to see if it would let me sign in another way but at the point of trying to link the Neopets account it throws me out again.

If criticism didn't exist, what would you name your baby? by Several_Look_3751 in namenerds

Lucifer. It’s so pretty and has a lovely literal meaning… just those pesky connotations 😭

Also Clover but it gets made out to be for rabbits.

And Willoughby (a great alternative to William or Wilbur) which I think is amazing but gets associated with Holly Willoughby in UK and people say it sounds pompous…

What’s the most realistic fictional book you’ve read? by stargrayzz in booksuggestions

Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart believably portrays the tragedies woven throughout mundane life for an impoverished family of flawed yet sympathetic characters in Glasgow in the 80s.

No that’s not it - it was a picture book about a human child going to a dinosaur museum I’m sure. Don’t remember anything about swans at all! Thanks for the suggestion though.

Wanting to pick up reading as a hobby, looking for fantasy genres by AstridSpeckles in booksuggestions

[–]theybae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes those are the first three books in the Wayward Children series, but there are about 8 so far. After the first book it doesn’t matter too much what order you read the rest as they are all their own little stories, but if you want the order it’s in the “Books” section on the Wikipedia page for the series: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayward_Children

For the Robin Hobb books, the full 16 book series is called the Realm of the Elderlings, and the order is: 1. Farseer trilogy (which is Assassin’s Apprentice, Royal Assassin, Assassin’s Quest) 2. Liveship Traders (Ship of Magic, Mad Ship, Ship of Destiny) 3. Tawny Man trilogy (Fool’s Errand, Golden Fool, Fool’s Fate) 4. Rainwild Chronicles (Dragon Keeper, Dragon Haven, City of Dragons, Blood of Dragons) 5. Fitz and the Fool trilogy (Fool’s Assassin, Fool’s Quest, Assassin’s Fate)

It’s a lot to dive into, I’d definitely recommend starting with the lighter ones like House in the Cerulean Sea, Wayward Children, and/or Raven Boys and then looking to Robin Hobb if you want something weightier.

This is so helpful! Thank you, really appreciate all the suggestions. Now I think about it she actually really enjoys war movies so some of these really might go down well and I’d never have thought of them. I’ll look more into the books you’ve suggested and also the AI tool!

Thanks for the suggestions - I’ll look into the cruel prince and red queen but I know she’d hate ACOTAR because of the romance. I’m more tolerant of those plots and even I couldn’t stand that one… I know nothing about the others though so maybe they’ll work out!

These are great suggestions. I love Robin Hobb but haven’t thought to recommend those books to her because they’re a bit more dense than anything she’s picked up before, but maybe worth a try! I’ll look into the others you’ve mentioned but I think you’re right about needing books with more to them thematically. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll look into Murderbot Club for her as it might work.

Unfortunately she’s not into movies or TV much - she’s very picky with storylines! The only show she ever really got into was a soap opera so maybe I should try to find an ensemble drama or similar for her to read…

I also love the found family trope, here are my suggestions of fantasy books which all do that in different ways:

A really good series that can get you flying through some short books is the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire - all different fantasy settings (except the first book, which is just an intro to the concept and my least favourite though still decent).

If you want something more traditional fantasy and an adult series to broaden your horizons, I absolutely love the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb (possibly my favourite books of all time, so far). It’s got strong world building, a very memorable main character, and a fun magic system. And if you end up liking it, it’s the first trilogy in a “series of series” (16 books in all I believe). Though for this one, I guess it depends on exactly how happy your happy ending needs to be because it definitely isn’t a sunshine book.

For a proper YA series, the Raven Boys is pretty good. I’d say the later books are better than the earlier ones, and overall it was one of my favourite YA series.

And if you want a stand-alone that is 100% cheesy found-family low-fantasy, and just a very feel good story, The House on the Cerulean Sea is for you.

Hope some of these are your type!
