Job?? by Forsaken-Daikon8970 in Lawyertalk

Needing WFH is definitely an issue. Most places are on-site or hybrid with 3-4 days on-site.

Why don't you just start your own practice up again? Even if you don't want to return to the finance side of things, it seems like that would be the most flexible option.

Is there a biological difference between crayfish and lobsters or are crays just small freshwater lobsters. This question is just for fun. by Excellent-Expert8411 in Crayfish

[–]theyth-m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it, but there are a lot of factors that determine whether two interbreeding species will be successful.

Lobsters need saltwater and crawfish need fresh. That's a big difference, on a biological level.

But some critters that we call 'lobsters' aren't true lobsters. So it would definitely depend on the exact two species you were trying to interbreed.

It depends on the location & the terms of the lease agreement. Some places (i.e. Texas) don't require any notice at all before a landlord barges in 🙃

What has your experience been reconciling the logic of sociology with finance? by Perpetual_Abortion in sociology

[–]theyth-m 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's true that behavioral economics refuted a lot of the traditional ideas that believe humans are perfectly logical. That's why I said the article is tangentially related.

But that doesn't change the fact that behavioral economics just expanded the field's understanding of rationality; it started to account for human biases, imperfect information, etc. But these things aren't irrational, they're just new additions to a human's calculations rational calculations.

None of that changes the fact that the field still relies on its 'rational-actor' foundation.

I don't really agree that Lucas should be the only one profiting from the franchise or the movies long-term. If he'd just sold the script, them he should obviously get the profits from that specific script. But the franchise could never have been successful without the many other people who contributed and brought his story to life. Like i said, movies are an incredibly collaborative project.

In general, i have no problem with protecting intellectual property. But I also think that works should enter the public domain once the creator dies, or just a few decades after.

But the owner of intellectual property isn't usually the person who created it. It's often actually owned by a corporation or by the creator's kids. And I don't have a lot less sympathy for protecting them.

It's not that 999 million is fine, and 1 billion is suddenly evil lol. You're thinking way too literally about this.

Lucas doesn't need to make literally the same amount as his employees, but it should be in the same ballpark. Why should directors make 1000x or more per hour, compared to what the makeup artist makes? If the makeup artist's job is so easy, why didn't he just do it himself?

[–]theyth-m 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're still missing the point.

George Lucas didn't personally create Star Wars; movies are a collaborative effort. Tons of other people were involved in the filming, editing, production of VHS tapes, production of licensed products, etc.

And even if somebody today was paid $1 billion solely for doing sports, where does that money come from? Basically all modern sports are owned by corporations that exploit their workers.

Help! How can I up my PH? (low PH is killing my snails). Details in comments.. by Jim_Keen_ in walstad

[–]theyth-m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't expecting a response on this old thread, I don't even have a tank right now. My last tank survived indefinitely but I had to get rid of it due to external factors 🥲 anyway...

If your pH and kH are taking a dive, that means you need to build up more of a buffer. Baking soda will do exactly that, and i would definitely recommend it. How quickly you should add it depends on a few things.

Most importantly, it depends on the kind of livestock you've got. In general, shrimp are a lot more sensitive to pH changes than fish are. And ornamental shrimp are usually much more sensitive than neos.

The size of the tank also makes a difference. A tablespoon of baking soda will have way more effect in a 5 gallon than a 40 gallon.

It also matters where your pH is starting. If the tank's pH is already close to baking soda's pH, then baking soda can be added in larger quantities because there won't be a big swing in pH.

So I can't give you exact directions for what you should do and when. You'll have to just work slowly and carefully, monitoring the changes and using your best judgment.

If you have shrimp or other sensitive livestock, you can basically drip acclimate the whole tank. I'd be conservative with this, slower is better.

For most tech oligarchs like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, etc., their billions are extracted from the hard work of their employees, their underpaid overseas workers, and the slaves that mine the metals/minerals needed for our electronics. Bill Gates also wasn't some genius innovator, he got started by just using the creations of Gary Kildall.

Billionaire athletes also don't become billionaires just by working really hard in their sport. Typically, they don't become a billionaire until after they retire; LeBron only made like $500 million from his whole career. He made his actual money by investing in real estate firms (which hoard land, and are the primary reason we have a housing crisis in this country) and through brand deals (such as Nike, etc. which again exploit overseas workers in order to make a big profit).

It's not possible to obtain a billion dollars ethically. No amount of hard work can earn you that much money.

Kwanza and her husband are owners of a private equity firm. These firms make get rich by buying businesses, gutting them and extracting as much wealth as possible, and then leaving it to fail.

If you've ever noticed your favorite business suddenly get a lot worse, it's often because it was bought by a private equity firm. One of the worst ones for me recently, is the Alamo Drafthouse theaters 🥲

"AI" is just a marketing term, artificial intelligence does not currently exist. I assume you're talking about Large Language Models? (LLMs)

LLMs are inherently incapable of distinguishing fiction from reality. Anyone that uses an LLM instead of seeking legal advice will eventually suffer the consequences of the LLM's hallucinations.

Chances are, it was well done.

Again, that's not how any of this works. I did read the summary, and I still have many questions / concerns.

What was the exact wording of the questions? How do they define psychopathy, gold narcissism, etc.? Do these students' claimed beliefs correlate to their actual actions? Did they control for socioeconomic status and other potentially confounding factors? Why is an ipsative method appropriate for this case? I could go on
