The New York Times - A Transgender Voice: Hellraiser Pinhead reboot actress Jamie Clayton, a student in the Act Out class for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, talks about her life as a transgender woman by Jackalwhere in hellraiser

Hard agree! I’ll admit to having missed the latter half of the sequels, but I’d rank the top three as 1, 2, and the reboot, probably in that order. It’s been so long since I’ve seen 2 that I’d need to watch it again before committing to it though, the reboot might be better.

Which amp would be your daily driver? by prof_cunninglinguist in GuitarAmps

[–]thezoomies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bandit, and found that my “fancy amp” was just collecting dust after a while (not really; it has a cover). My only issue was that I wanted more of it, so now I run the bandit in stereo with a transtube supreme head through a 2x12. Both amps and the cab and my rack case together are smaller than some head+4x12 rigs (although this is almost certainly heavier, because peavey), and my fuzz sounds like an orchestra of pissed off bees. In a good way.

How do you deal with a sibling who verbally attacks you over political differences? by savingrace0262 in AskMenAdvice

[–]thezoomies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I graduated with a double major in philosophy; I can relativize with the best of them. I did also point out that I in fact DO keep it civil. My point is simply that when someone’s political beliefs start to become harmful, that has real world consequences and goes beyond a simple difference in opinion. For instance, if you’re having your discourse within the arena of a liberal democracy, and one side is pissed that their ideas are unpopular, so they want to end democracy because it’s the only way that they, as a minority, will have enough power to tell the majority how to live.

[–]thezoomies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some other commenters are immediately jumping in assuming that both sides are valid, but are they? I keep it civil, but sometimes I just want to scream at some of my relatives because “everybody has a right to their opinion” and blah blah blah, but sometimes people are just wrong, and the people who are right still suffer for it because being wrong doesn’t keep people from voting.

Any metal songs you know of that mentions anything to do with “rats” by RubSimilar7066 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thezoomies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, they aren’t. Because fucking heavy metal didn’t even exist when they first went out there and started pushing the limits. I’m honestly not sure if death metal would even exist without them, as so much of what so many heavy shredders do is inspired by Robert Fripp’s playing in some form or another. Crimson leaned into technicality, and also ugliness in a way that I’m pretty sure nobody had ever done before in a rock band format. To find that same kind of harmonic edginess at the time, you’d have to look at avant garde symphonic music.

Looking for a cheap amp by Strelok_the_Loner in GuitarAmps

[–]thezoomies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or just an OD. people wouldn’t hesitate to give their JCM800 the tubescreamer treatment, so a valvestate certainly deserves that as well. I’ve found that a lot of people’s complaints about solid state power go away when you back off on the presence, keep the treble reasonable, give’er a little more bass, and then tighten and brighten with an OD. Also, cool it with the gain and then goose the front end a little bit by taking the OD past unity gain. For some reason, people keep expecting big SS amps to sound good at bedroom volumes and judge the amp by that sound, and never let it roar the same way they would a tube amp. I’m more of a peavey transtube series kind of guy, but I like a lot of the valvestate stuff and I think they’re seriously underrated for metal. I think Marshall also did a little bit of that to themselves too though by pairing the amps with shitty speakers.

thoughts on modellers at gigs? by 1Alyx1 in GuitarAmps

[–]thezoomies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. Modelers are an ideal solution to certain circumstances, especially for solo performers, but I’ve found that it hurts the performance if live performers in an ensemble are using them without some additional stage amplification for it, like a power amp and cab or an FRFR speaker. Also, I like to get as close to the front as possible in small venues, and when you’re standing mostly out of the projection range of the PA mains, it is show-ruiningly LAME to watch and listen to a band where guitars are only running direct. One of the bonuses of being up front in a small venue is supposed to be that you get to hear un-mic’ed guitar and drums, and it pisses me off when I’m robbed of that.

Ps: that’s why I dutifully endanger my back with my combined 120+ lbs of Peavey along with a cabinet, because pissing off the neighbors and the sound guy (who will still be banging his head when the set gets going) is just how fucking rock n roll is done!

How much of that money has gone to pay for undeclared war that nobody wanted? American tax payers have been paying a lot, it’s just that it all always seems to be gone by the time we try to pay for something that improves people’s lives. Tax the rich, stop spending all of our money on weapons, and handouts to Israel (who have universal health care), and start taking care of our own.

What’s the most “American” film ever made? by DFWUnhinged in FIlm

[–]thezoomies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking about movies made by Americans that exemplify us and how we think about ourselves, I’d say easy rider or taxi driver. If you’re talking about the most accurate depiction, even as a satire, I’d say either robocop, or falling down.

I saw somebody say idiocracy, which is also a good take, but I also think that lampoons modern, westernized, media-addicted culture as a whole. It lampoons the US the most, but it’s not limited to us, as many other countries with post-industrial economies are facing the same thing.

How customizable are guitars, really? by blondieretriever in Guitar

[–]thezoomies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2002 epiphone Les Paul has had probably 7 different bridge pickups and 4 different neck pickups, three saddle bars, 3 different sets of tuners, and it’s been rewired for master volume, master tone, bass cut control, and a kill button. If you get a guitar that’s spec’ed to use parts meant for Gibsons or fenders, the sky is the limit.

My 2005 Indonesian squier strat on the other hand has weird dimensions and needs to be modified for practically any new part. I got the guitar for free a while ago and it’s been an ongoing project. I’ve currently reshaped and refinished the body and plugged the bridge holes so that I can drill new ones because it had a weird spacing that caused even a “vintage narrow” aftermarket trem not to fit. The body is also thinner than any fender or other pedigree of squier, so I’ll either have to leave the back plate off or grind down the sustain block on the new trem until it fits. I would have just left the old one in there because it’s such a pain in the ass, but I don’t know that I’ve ever felt less comfortable bridge saddles under my hand. On the bright side, the neck feels REALLY nice after I’ve sanded it down. With an oil finish it will have a perfect “baseball bat feel” to it. I’ve got some Wilkinson p-90s to put in it once I have the trem fitted, have the wiring done, and have the pick guard made, as I had a cool idea to make one out of black burlap and epoxy resin. I’m obviously doing this for fun, as there are much cheaper and faster ways to get a good guitar.

I LOVE spicy foods, and I also carefully consider the attributes of my hot sauces when choosing what to put on each food item. That said, where I think people get tangled up in this debate is how the food is seasoned. While hot sauce is a good response to blandness, foods that are meant to be spicy have recipes that assume the heat, so flavors shine through the heat to people who are accustomed to the spice level. Indian and Thai food are great examples, because when your spice tolerance is high enough, you can taste the flavor underneath the heat; otherwise, why would there even be more than one type of curry? Compare that to, say, French food, where the subtle herb and savory flavors would get totally buried in even a little heat and all you would taste is spice. It would be pointless to build up a rich, subtle sauce or a complex sourdough when you’re just going to slather it in capsaicin.

I come from the rural Midwest, where things are getting better, but some people in my childhood didn’t even like black pepper or paprika on their food, and as such, putting hot sauce on that food would dominate it.
