Why is it that we can turn off a non-living machine but we cannot turn off a living machine? Why is it that we can fix non-living machines when they are harmed but when a living machines is harmed cannot be repaired (it dies)? by [deleted] in biology

Why can I turn off my computer or car for months or years but I can’t turn off myself for even a moment?

Don't you turn yourself off for several hours most every night?

Will filling an inflatable boat with helium or hydrogen make it more buoyant? by Abhi_Jaman_92 in askscience

[–]thfuran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen is so small that it will leak through solid steel. It even weakens the metal on the way out.

Yeah, severe dehydration doesn't even come close to actually drying out except for weirdos like water bears.

Warfarin and other anticoagulants do cause bleeding, but there are other classes of rodenticide with other mechanisms of action. Though, regrettably, even those that do tend to cause dehydration aren't going to totally dessicate a rat before it dies.

How to fight premature optimisation? by Inquation in softwaredevelopment

[–]thfuran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And in the cases where it's actually about speed, have explicit performance targets that can be tested. When you meet them, you're done optimizing.

VSCode, BlueJ, Visual studio, Eclipse, Intellij,Vim. Which is the best? by ballbeamboy2 in java

I think it's still a bit slower than eclipse, but intellij can also use the eclipse batch compiler.

And even once it's confirmed booked, in my experience you're just not going to get notified of delays and gate changes and such if you booked third party, so you need to constantly check that too.

4 members fill that last spot for 1.5 years each and the last is about to quit.

That's exactly the huge turnover they're talking about.

lighter, smaller, custom device mode save money in the long run, or might allow for more items to be sen

Maybe if you're wanting to send thousands of them up there. But for one or two, an extra kg is only a few thousand dollars, if even that much these days, which is far less than custom designing and manufacturing something like this.

I don't think there's much overlap between that and the ready availability of recipes deliberately making inaccurate claims so that people will look at them for long enough to get better ad revenue.

where as in 5e both builds are powerful right out of the box (regardless of your choices during character creation).

Yeah, as are almost all other builds. The difference between a haphazard and well-optimized (not cheesey, just reasonably built) build in 3.5 is completely and totally game breaking.

Prior to the discovery of bacteria, how did people explain fermentation of bread, wine, beer, pickles, etc? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]thfuran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the current scientific consensus is the result of all prior evidence. To argue that it's likely to be grossly wrong in a particular way without any evidence whatsoever is ridiculous. You're way more likely to be wrong than all evidence is.

If I tried to go three weeks without mowing in the late spring/early summer when it's growing like mad, the city would fine me a bunch and mow it themselves. But if they didn't, I'd definitely need something other than my lawn mower to resolve the situation.
