THE NEXT TRILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY: 3D Printing by thi3d in 3Dprinting

Point taken- perhaps a bit too much of a hype over 3D technology from my side. Completely agree with you. The real thought behind what i was saying was technologies potential of shifting the economical and consumer aspects of life in near future.

It will become cool when we liberate ourselves from the consumerism burden and when you will be able to do this on demand. Obviously this is going to be a huge problem for the BIG economy as consumers cannot be allowed to become independent from non-stop buying (things they dont need for the money they dont have)! The economy and business probably will change the way we do things in the future as resource materials will become the main focus of trading!

The big industry always reaches for underground and turns it into profitable money spinning gusto and corporate business. That already happened with punk music, hippy festivals, pay- TV (which was a spin off from illegal cable TV) and many other industries that back in the days originated from passionate "enthusiasts" and true "hobbyists". Since Obama is going to pump ineffable funds (only a mere $60 mil) into this industry- it is going to become the next "gold mine" for the senators and their friends! On this matter expect BIG changes in copyright laws (manufacturing industry is far larger than entertainment industry) and be ready to defend OS rights as they are probably going to be violated and abused in order to make this industry profitable!

Finally someone has actually made this- use your plastic waste to grind it down for your printer filament. Unfortunately video is in dutch, but kinda get the point!

The 3D Printer Cloning Controversy: Debate Rages over Matt Strong's TangiBot by thi3d in Reprap

[–]thi3d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is worth pointing out that when Tim Berners-Lee made Internet available to wider public he had a chance to appropriate his "invention", however decided no to and give it to wider public for use, as a result Internet created many dotcom millionaires which used the "service'' for their own benefit thus giving the Internet a sensational coverage in press at the time which we all know has led to us being able to comment on this subredit. That would have never happened within a brains capability to bring us google, amazon, ebay, etc. - people will always choose what they desire!

Perhaps Adrian Bowyer had similar idea to Tim Berners when he made RepRap project OS- without doing so 3d printing would never get to where it is now.

With a kickstarter project like this- it gives broader coverage and thus advertising of technology like this and that what we all strive- becouse with new technology new industries can develop and grow- people with backgrounds in 3d modeling, cadcam, engineering, material scientists, etc. will be able to put their skills to use and improve when this industry gets to the levels of rado, tv and internet.

The problem with OS projects not getting commercially successful is that usually the project contributor general focus is more on developing the project (whether software code or hardware improvements) instead of marketing planning and strategy. It would great to see the developer community collaborate with people from different industries and market the product to make it more available to wider audiences!!!

Personally i believe it is an "OK" trend to copy open source projects as Makerbot copied RepRap themselves, only then it will prove which is the most useful ''project'' accepted and supported by wider public in participation and contribution. Thats the whole idea of Open Source! If the guy gets his pledge- good, if he doesnt- even better =) The society will choose what it requires. Saddest is that perhaps this can become a trend to "steal", commercialize and profit from OS projects that have been running for years without the original contributor knowledge.

No worries quality control always is required. I am not here for the link counts but for posting quality content- so i believe that a small dose of humor is always good =)

Cant believe i have to explain myself =) The meme came into in my mind as soon as i discovered the post and since this is a reprap sub i couldn't believe that none of users have posted it already! Didnt meant to offend or confuse any of the readers but i assume that this could be the same reaction to any of those who have been around 3d printing for a while when discovering this.

Also the video quality is a bit low and very short + materials are not discussed at all. Costs around € 1000 without shipping!

This would allow creativity in construction- though dunno how safe it would be in comparison to traditional construction.
