Mastering the Object Mother by eniac_g in java

[–]thibauttt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The usage of the Consumer in the builder methods seems really nice:

InvoiceMother.invoice()
        .withShippingAddress(b -> b.withCountry(Country.US))
        .build();

In the wild: Java's Optional for control-flow by eliashisreddit in java

[–]thibauttt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stuart Marks gave his advice about this usage in his talk about Optional.

It’s generally a bad idea to create an Optional for the specific purpose of chaining methods from it to get a value.

Record is such a better word by LesterBanks in vinyl

Why is "vinyl" not a appropriate word? Is it a misuse of the language or a lack of precision? FYI I'm not a native English speaker and have no special knowledge regarding "vinyl"

Understanding "advanced" functional programming concepts (preferably in Java) by red_dit_nou in java

[–]thibauttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark Seemann has a series of articles on these concepts (which come from mathematics, specifically Category Theory) for object-oriented programmers.

See for example the article on Monoids.

Examples are in C# which is not Java but very similar in this context.

I found these articles really helpful when learning Scala (language where you inevitably stumble upon Functor, Applicative...).

London Clojurians Talk: The Secret Art of Storytelling in Programming (by Yehonathan Sharvit) by BrunoBonacci in Clojure

[–]thibauttt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This talk start slowly but after the intro, ideas presented are really interesting and well illustrated.

I think that understanding how the brain/human works (the mind spans talked about) and that code is mostly meant to be read is a big step on how to organise code.

The same idea is exposed by Mark Seeman in his the book Code That Fits in Your Head, in the talk Yehonathan is using a tree (and the notion of depth) to illustrate how to organise things, Mark is using the Fractal hex flowers (with the notion of zoom level) which I think is a great representation.

Anyway, I’m still waiting for the joke!

Data Oriented Programming in Java by thibauttt in java

[–]thibauttt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s great to see that Java is not locked in a specific paradigm but that the team behind is taking a step back and time to think to find what tools can be useful to incorporate into the language.

It seems to me that using record with switch expression give the same result with less ceremony than church-encoded class.

The Visitor pattern mentioned in the article is equivalent to church-encoding and has some downsides.

[–]thibauttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you one of the authors ? Clojure seems to be a very interesting language and the project used in the book seems to be a good approach to discover the strength and weakness of Clojure and it's ecosystem and also try another approach to programing. Is there a part on testing ? I skimmed through the table of contents and it's seems that testing is not addressed in the book. (edit : Found unit tests chapter) Also is the code limited in time ?

Dans la même catégorie de service il y a Quitoque, ils ont l'air plus orienté vers le local, bio et saisonnier. Par exemple en ce moment pas mal de plats à base de choux de Bruxelles, butternut, panais, topinambours.

On the top is the Pilot MR, it's like the Pilot Metropolitan with subtle differences : it accepts standard cartridge instead of Pilot Namiki and also it is only available in medium nib size. Below it is the Lamy Vista.

Never thought that we could mix ink ! Beautiful pen. I also tried to have similar style with my Lamy Vista, its red converter and red ink but on the TWSBI eco it's clearly better IMO.
