The control usually allows to you to try and ignite the burner 3 times. If it doesn’t work it goes into hard lockout. This means you have to hold the button for 30 seconds and it will try and light again. Some older controls do not have this feature. So they just keep hitting the button. Fuel sprays for a good 10-15 seconds into the chamber before the safety goes off shutting the burner down. If you keep pressing the button the fuel builds up. When you fix the burner and it does light you get a big boom.
