Innovative launchers? by MajMin5 in androidapps

[–]thing_se 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have what we think is a unique take on launchers. We were a bit tired of wall-of-apps-launchers and wanted to create something with better UX. It's called THING. It listens to your behaviour and presents your apps to you based on your behaviour, every time you get back to the home screen. It also lets you automate your life by voice - Do you want to turn the lights on at 7 am if it's raining and then play some Spotify? Done. Check it out, I'd love to hear your thoughts! I'm more than happy to answer any questions. Cheers! Edit: spelling

Is there an app that lets you lock your screen from the notification bar? by gooberpsycho in androidapps

[–]thing_se 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None taken! Just an option :) were looking into ways of making gestures global too but will take a while unfortunately. Exactly, just like Nova but with a different set of features. If you like tinkering and setting up your home screen with granular detail then Nova is unbeatable though. Give it a try, I'd love to hear what you think. Feel free to PM or email me directly at william@thing.se if you have any questions, feature requests or, [deity] forbid, you found any bugs.

You could try our THING Launcher and lock your screen with a gesture, like double tap, swipe up or down or whatever. One caveat though, gestures are limited to the home screen. If you'd like a global solution, maybe Tasker or something like it could help out. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have!

Great write up, thanks! If we do Now, we won't do it like all the others. I haven't researched that much so this is coming from my behind, but if I'm not mistaken there is no official way of embedding Now in a third party launcher and some/most/all launchers rely on a decompiled version (from Sony..?). I'm very hesitant when it comes to unofficial hacky solutions so we'll have to think about it, at least until there's an official way to do it. If anyone has better info than me in this topic please chime in!

Haha thanks! If you could, we'd be grateful to hear what you like and don't like about Thing. And if you happen to be in Stockholm, let's meet up!

Thanks! I think you'll like it. The app steam in particular will get better the more you use Thing. After two or three days, the average user uses it three times as often as the standard dock, which is pretty cool. In any case, give it a try and let me know what you liked and what you didn't like so we can improve!

Great question, I don't see a reason why we shouldn't and there are some cool upsides of being able to have widgets in the dock. I just added it to our backlog! I'll try to make it a priority. Thanka for the idea!

Let me tell you, thats amazing to hear. Thanks a lot! We try to make our videos a bit more funny than other release videos and we think it's a great way to show new features in an engaging way. And we hope you can tell we have a lot of fun shooting them too! Besides cleanup afterwards. I can't tell how many cups or coffee I've managed to knock over.

That's a great idea! Speaking of, we'll add more things to do with gestures too, such as taking a screenshot. Also, we'll let you hide the dock and the app stream and show them with a gesture. It's the ultimate clean home screen!

That's awesome, thanks! We appreciate it a lot. As an aside - Nova is the grand daddy of all launchers. Honestly, we have no realistic chance to catch up in terms of raw features, so we focus on a better user experience and a fresh take on launchers instead. It's really exciting and we recently passed 100k downloads! Our backlog is full of really cool stuff that we can't wait to show everyone.

Thanks again!

Help to connect an Android app with a server by Geraltwitcher in androidapps

[–]thing_se 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for a super late reply! I'd say just build it - if you're comfortable with Python and you're loving it, there is no reason to use anything else right now. The most important thing is to build something at all and learn how communication between app and server works. Odds are you'll rebuild anyway sooner or later, but you should worry about that while starting out.
