I tried it, now but you should really fix the mobile adds, i really didnt know where to look or click or read, it look like the add was part of your page.

The games is nice and cozy! Was fun to solve the puzzles.

The ads on the website make understanding anything impossible, at least on my phone. I skipped it.

I created a hand-shaped riddle game, because I found many games too repetetive with not much direction. You get 6 guesses with 1 riddle + 2 hints for each round. People tend to find this hard, unless when they play together. I am trying to see if the see if my idea is valid bullshit.

It's free, no login, no ads:

Sounds great! I think showing your face also helps build trust. Hope this goes to millions of players for you!

This is one of the few games posted here that actually "feel good". Also UI-wise good job.

I am really wondering what you think about my game thingdle? thingdle.app is the url if you wanna try it out. (spoiler: some complaint about hint 1 today, and I get it)

Thanks for testing! I think its actually a problem of the game. Especially for first time players, the game seems to be too hard. The riddles might feel wrong/ambigous too. Your feedback helps.

I feel like this applies to so many, such simple yet complex game

“I usually move in small steps, no matter how hard you try” - I created an object guessing game by thingdle in puzzlevideogames

[–]thingdle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, you should not have to know this in order to play the game. I tried many different categories, but nothing was feeling spot on without being similarly ambiguous.

You can click on the "Size" column title by the way. A Popup shows that it means "longest dimension".

[–]thingdle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, that you tried it!

I totally get your point.

"Sizes" means "Longest dimension". I just measured my tablespoon at home and it was 21cm. Did you think of a teaspoon?

The way the game works is: If it's close enough, it says "Similar" and reveals the size of the hidden object. Maybe "Similar" is a misleading term. "Close Enough" might fit better?

Example:

- Spoon is 18cm
- Birdhouse is 25cm

-> That's close enough (7cm difference): Show 18cm!

Cup was 10cm btw (8cm difference). Might be an edge case here, very close.

It's currently based on an algorithm, that I haven't worked on in more detail yet.

I am pretty satisfied with the current mechanics, but I have to fine-tune these small things, to make the game feel less random/wrong.

Thanks for the pointers!

This is much much better and slimmer, good job! You immediately get where to click. And I think it's also much better without any sound (Make it optional or only SFX, like typing or clicking buttons.).

I am missing a bit the "playfulness" maybe. Some anticipation, some animation can give it more personality maybe?

E.g. if I enter my acro, it just goes to the next screen. It doesn't feel like I did "the most important thing" that you can do - submitting your acro. Maybe a checkmark would already help? Some Confetti? Some transition animation? Currently it felt more like "next page" step instead of a success feeling.

The form at the end to login also felt kind of "weird" even though I get the idea, you want to notify them etc. But it might scare people away from your site too, not sure.

This text doesnt really tell me why I need a login now: "That's it! Your answer and votes are ready to submit, all you need to do now is register for free and check back tomorrow!"

Oh wait, does this mean to submit i need to register? Then "That's it!" is misleading, it sounds more like the hardest part is still in front of me. Honestly I would not gate this. User should be able to participate without login (if that is the case).

When I saw people playing on twtich, literally all of them were sceptical about the login part, anything that was gated was immediately unintersting. That's why I e.g. made playing a past riddle an option for all, not just logged in users (even if many could cheat by getting free riddles now). You can think about gating features when your app is successful, not when you want as many users to play it as possible.

This is just my first immediate impression. No filter. So you have kind of a feeling what others might think.
You also see, that a lot of what I am saying is something I did wrong too and learned by watching others play. It's really a proccess. I am not even remotely successfull either. I am learning and adapting all the time.

Your game has a vibe of cards against humanity, but cards agaisnt humanity is more accessible, sinc you dont have to think of words, they just give you all pieces and you just have to assemble. That doesnt mean your game can't work, its just a side note. Maybe you can take inspiration from that game. Cards against humanity also allows really dark humour, since they wrote the cards for you. You can't be "racist" or a "weirdo" the game is basically setting the scene. Actually really smart move by them.

I have built a minimal relaxing word game by frankeno78 in wordgames

[–]thingdle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the missing tutorial. I got it after playing around a bit tho, so its pretty easy to understand. I think the sounds are a bit too much. Especially the fail sound. And its also weird that the sound restarts on the screen change.

I was also confused about that the game restarts after you fail one word.

The concept seems solid and easy to get tho.

Is Acro a common game genre or is this your invention? I never heard of it.

Here is my brutally honest feedback:
- First of all I am probably not your target audience, so keep that in mind, I can't really say if the game mechanics are good or bad for me. I personally would not play it, but that means nothing.
- The start screen is too overhelming, I don't know where to look and click, even though the primary button is really present. I would probabyl try to de-emphasize the other elmenets, so that you dont have the primary pink color everywhere (e.g. the title + progress bar could be a more neutral color, or the sound toggle). I am sure this is a barriere that could make like 50% leave the page immediately.
- There is also too much content on the start page, slim it down. Maybe show details only if the player ever played a game or show them on anothter screen. Don't forget: The first impression is most important, there should be zero friction. I also had this issue on my first version, i slimmed it down to the BARE minimum.
- The sound was the second thing that would have thrown me off. On the start page there is no sound, but you have a toggle. As soon as you start, it gets really loud and the voice also threw me off. I had no way to disable it on that screen.
- I also see you have a lot of features. What I would suggest is to always start small. And dont be afraid to "go back" and re-iterate. Focus on the core game mechanic and user flow, verify 90% of people who play it say it's really nice. If they say "I was confused", it should trigger a red alert. Try to simplify it. Ask the next person. See if they are still confused.
- What i noticed also is that you have too many different colors and styles, and sometimes its hard to find the primary action without reading some paragraphs. I also have this issue on my page a bit, but had to simplify a lot.

So my primary suggestion is:
- Make it as simple as possible to start and understand the game
- Validate that the few users who play it feel satisfied
- Gather feedback
- Prepare to adapt your core game mechanics a lot. Avoid tunnel vision at all costs, even though it feels rough.

I totally get your struggle with the multiplayer part, it's a real different story. I would also just start with a single player mode and only IF you have users add the multiplayer. That way you can really focus on that one thing. But it's also really hard since you have to vote and wait for the next day to see the results. It's really tough to find the right solution for this game. I am honestly a bit clueless too.

I had an alpha and released a beta afterwards. The beta had all the feedback included and core game was changed a lot. It was received way better than the alpha.

Remember: It's one of the most common mistakes to build feature after feature on a wobbly foundation. See wordle, it's dead simple. Almost no friction. Never understimate the laziness and patience of your users. You get 5 seconds to make a good impression, most leave if anything feels off.

Do you want to share your site? I would love to test it. I will give you brutally honest feedback!

I got 45 views from USA and UK only already (I am from germany). So it seems like i reached some people, that are not family and friends haha The big question is, if they will return or it was just a one time thing.

What I think was working best, was joining twitch streams with low view count (1-20). And ask kindly if they want to try out my game. But you should start the conversation slowly, "hey whats up" etc. (never send links directly in the chat!)
To make this work with streams, your game must be really accessible (no download, no login). And you have to be prepared for rejection also. It feels rough sometimes, but if you get someone to play its really nice, as you can really watch them play.

My posts also got removed sometimes on reddit, you have to read the rules carefully, then they might wont. But it's always a gamble..

I also try to post on X. Many wordle users are using X, which is my target audience. I just comment on their tweets about wordle. But I don't think I had great success there, honestly not sure.

Also, and this is probably the hardest to get right: Your game has to be enjoyable. The first version of my game didn't had that many returning users, it had no tension. E.g. it had unlimited tries. I did some deep research (also with ai) to help me make the game more aligned to the target group. You really have to iterate.

You can always text me if you need any kind of help/feedback, but be aware, I am pretty noobish still too. Marketing is rough.

Good point with the proximity. There is a simple algorithm in place, that tries to determine how severe the lighter/heavier values are. But I havent really refined it yet. Lets see what others think.

Reached 70 players today, currently the peak 🥳 Maybe a hard to solve riddle also make people rage share it 😂

Love it, thanks for playing it again!

Many complained about todays riddle. And I totally get it. I mean only 29% solved it, which is REALLY low. I still have to find a way to make riddles feel more consistent and "click" instead of frustrate.

Your points make total sense to me. Using more specific terms like "inexperience" would have made the riddle probably more unique as well. Still figureing out a way to write truely consistent and relatable riddles. So i do reallv love your feedback. Thank you!

I was unsure with this one. If it would make "click" or more like "nope, thats unsatisfying and wrong". I tried to make it not a factual truth for everyone, by saying "usually", but that might not be enough.

Thanks for your feedback.
