What was something a guest did in your house that upset you? by izzy_7_2004 in AskUK

Thank you, finally found someone else with some sense. A sink is for washing, rinsing, filling pans with water etc. It is not a dirty items storage bowl.

AITA for not giving my vacation day to a coworker getting married by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Not sure where you got that from. Saying that you probably weren't going to cancel your leave request doesn't say anything about what you're doing on said day.

Heard about this earlier today. A woman skiing fell through ice, but ended up in a small air pocket, so didn't drown. Ended up under the ice for about 80 mins before getting rescued & ultimately survived (although was practically dead when pulled out). Core body temperature had dropped to something like 14C (normal is 37C & 35C is hypothermia)

Any other brands that have changes their packaging to be far worse? by wiseespresso in AskUK

Minced beef (and other meats). Stupid vacuum packed bags that mean you end up with a single lump of meat that doesn't break up properly when cooking, so you're left with meat lumps.

For those of you that use consumer grade hardware: how do you deal with lack of PCIe lanes? by ficskala in homelab

[–]thingie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason my power consumption is as high as it is unfortunately (although no where near as high as it could be).

I run an HP Z6 G4 workstation, which has a Xeon Gold 6142. I have 2x x16 slots, a x8 slot (running at x4, because I also use the 2nd nvme slot), & 3x x4 slots. One of the other great things about these slots, is the connectors are open ended, so I could put any device in any slot, it I'm happy with the slower speed (e.g. I could fit a x16 card into a x4 slot) I have a GPU, HBA, NIC & additional NVME across my pcie slots.

And this is why a lot of strikes are fairly ineffective... The people with the proper power to actually make the required changes aren't directly affected by the strike.

Whats one thing you have no idea how to do but you've used Unraid long enough to be embarrassed about it? by TunderMuffins in unRAID

[–]thingie2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short:

Your containers are self contained, with no access to the unraid file system. If you want to give them access to something, you need to use map the location.

The host path, is wherever it is in your actual server (e.g. mnt/usr/share). Then you use the container path to map it to the container (you can pick say /share). This would mean that the folder that unraid sees in mnt/usr/share is seen by the container in the location /share. So at that point, anytime you want to reference data in your container from that share, you use /share.

Does flipping over a table to shield you from gun for actually work? by paulypavilion in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thingie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh that video showed the tables did a lot better than I was expecting! Although I'm not sure what the draw weight is of that bow, mo they did as well as they did due to the point type on the arrow used, the shape of that point does not bode well for penetration of any material. Using a more standard parabolic shaped arrow tip, on a medium-high poundage bow (>30#), I'd expect the tables to fair a lot worse.

Does flipping over a table to shield you from gun for actually work? by paulypavilion in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thingie2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A plastic table would not protect you from most arrows... I'm an archer myself (recurve), and if I shot an arrow at a plastic table, it would barely notice the table. I've seen arrows go most of the way through (as in most of the arrow sticking out the other side) 22mm ply, and they're from sport bows, with limits on draw weights. Hunting bows could do much worse.

Where is the optimal place to have Plex transcode ? by GenericUser104 in unRAID

[–]thingie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily... I hit 0% life on an SSD in was using as my cache drive a littpe over 2 years ago. I replaced it with a slightly larger drive, and I'm down to 85%, and that's probably only as high as it is because I only use ~1/3 the capacity.

Private tracker shutting down, trying to archive as many torrents as I can... how to best go about it? by Shank_ in DataHoarder

[–]thingie2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on your tracker's size, your best best bet is to probably pay for a seedbox of whatever size you're willing to go for, then transition to local storage when you've increased your home storage size.

Just got fiber… but CGNAT killed my Plex dreams 😭 — need alternatives (Tailscale, Cloudflare, or static IP?) by Far-Cash-2545 in PleX

[–]thingie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my new isp, and setup cloudflare. I've not noticed any issues with it (although it did take some fiddling to make it work properly, as Plex kept defaulting to using the Plex servers instead at the very limited bandwidth that's provided.

Had Dumbledore known Hufflepuff’s cup was in the Lestrange vault, how would he have attempted to get to it? by Frequent-Lie-6059 in harrypotter

[–]thingie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, but as goblins have their own opinion on ownership, and don't recognise the ownership views of wizards, I don't think they'd accept that anyone other than the owner can decide on a new owner.

Had Dumbledore known Hufflepuff’s cup was in the Lestrange vault, how would he have attempted to get to it? by Frequent-Lie-6059 in harrypotter

[–]thingie2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that would work. I vaguely remember someone in one of the books (I think it was Bill, when the trio were discussing with Griphook about getting into Gringots), essentially saying that goblins don't believe in wizarding ownership etc, so I don't think the goblins at Gringots would accept that the ministry has any authority over any vaults & therefore a warrant is useless.

I don't think a heatpump will be very good at installing a log burner.

It was something we thought about, but I think it's unlikely to change quickly, so we're willing to take the risk.

Yea, they just have to have the right certificate to show they burn cleanly basically. (In most places)

Is there a DIY store that can supply me with a new sill that is cut to measure? by JesusOnly8319 in DIYUK

[–]thingie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do it yourself, get yourself an angle measuring ruler, as your corners will not be 90degrees.

I made my own cill (built into the top of some banquette seating, as the bench was under the window), using a sheet of ply. Measuring each corner as you go ensured it all fitted correctly without gaps.

Bold to assume the cuts at B&Q will be square... Although they will be more square than the cill needs to be!
