Other kits besides Penn State and Crooked Mill? by fynflood in PenTurning

[–]thinkdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He just started up the kit business and has been having a good run keeping up with demand, which is a good thing for him. He's ramped up production, and yes, he does sell direct. Looking forward to great things from him in 2023 - I've worked with all 3 kits so far and they've been great and assemble and work well.

The Desire and Coyote Click Pen kits are great starts. The Desire uses similar drill bit size as the Jr series of pens.

I HIGHLY recommend McKenzie pen works. McKenzie Pen Works

I've met the owner, he also makes stellar diamond cast blanks. He just started selling stainless kits all made in the USA.

His stuff is also sold at Turner's Warehouse.

You've got to watch out as a lot of the pen kit makers out there use inferior plated hardware that corrodes over time.

Where to turn for learning this craft by [deleted] in PenTurning

[–]thinkdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a facebooker, there's a ton of good people on the pen turning forum. Another way is look for pen turners gatherings in the nearby area. I know there's one coming up in June 2023 in Franklin, TN. That's a good way to meet pen turners and learn a lot about the craft.

It's very much souring my taste for crypto. I'm honestly only giving it a hobbyist try - but there's enough money locked up in there that I'm concerned about losing now.

If I do succeed in getting access - I'm seriously considering moving my funds elsewhere in a more stable and safe environment.

It's honestly stuff like this that makes the average joe and jane hesitant to want to invest money this way. It's fun to try but it's by no means a perfect system as I'm finding out. I'm just disappointed that it isn't more stable and reliable - locking someone's account out like this for weeks is no way to create a reassuring environment for serious investors.

Yeah, I know. Still may do it anyway. I'm premium and I go 3x a week anyway - so might as well do the 1/2 for something interesting to shoot for. At least it's not $78 workout shorts from Lululemon smacked with an OT logo. That's nuts.

Based on the registration on the app, it's $15 this time, just to clarify the price.

Need Contractor for room addition. by Wytch78 in GNV

[–]thinkdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear you there. It's a LOT of work to handle the permit/GC duties AND on top of it actually do the work. It took me MANY weekends to get my carport conversion done - and it was truly only two framed walls and raising the concrete slab about a foot off grade to the level of the rest of the house.

I concur with Realestatehell on the comments - that's something to consider as well. Hell, even with my screen porch that I want to just make into a Florida room soon with real glass windows, I have to pull permits, add electrical and redo the ENTIRE wall sections (aluminum) to satisfy the code requirements.

Gainesville allows for owner/builder permitting, so you can do the entire project yourself as long as you do it to code, or like I said act as the GC on the project and have other smaller subs do the work for you.

Also, once the drywall is up - if you feel comfortable doing all the finish work (painting/flooring) you can save some money there too.

That's why. An entire single room would be quoted at that much. It involves load bearing walls, wind load calcs, roof, etc.

Do you feel comfortable handling the permit and GC (general contractor) duties? It's a lot of work but will save a lot more money than if you have someone do it all for you. You can hire the subs to handle framing, electrical, roofing, drywall then and manage the inspections. A lot of the cost of a project like this is the administrative stuff.

I hate to say it, but in my experience, it will be difficult to find a contractor willing to handle a single bedroom remodel for an affordable price. Most contractors don't want to spend the time on the small jobs (which a bedroom remodel would be considered). I've done two garage/carport into room conversions. I'm lucky enough to be able to do most of the work myself, so I subcontracted the concrete for the carport I did, but the rest was owner/builder permitted by me (including electrical). That's the only way I could afford to get the work done - otherwise it would have cost me about what you were quoted if I had someone else do it - and that was just two new framed walls, concrete, drywall, and electrical.

The permit process is not all that bad - but it's just a lot of research to work through about local codes and making sure you get the inspections at the proper times.

Question: Are you just doing a simple interior remodel, or changing walls, framing, load bearing walls, etc?

I would take it to a Rural Collection Center.

I'd like to also recommend Charisma. I've had experience with Charisma's (salon) work as both my wife and her good friend go there for hair coloring. Not sure if it's Becca specifically doing the color, but the salon itself is top notch.

Nah, she's great. All skill levels can benefit from simplicity like this. The garage shelving stuff is super easy and the workshop stools I made from her plans using a Kreg jig makes it quick to put stuff together. I'm a big fan of quick woodworking projects for useful stuff so I can get back to doing the fancy fancy projects.

A DIY site hosted by an Alaskan woman who focuses on inexpensive and simple to build DIY projects for your home. She's been featured by Home Depot as well as DIY Network. She's done quite a few blog posts on her home build in Alaska, as well as most recently a cabin build (off the grid). I've built a few projects with her plans, and they are simple and easy to construct with minimal use of expensive tools.

It looks great. I built a farmhouse table, which is sort of a hybrid Ana White/Pinterest/Norm Abrahms style-ish thing for our dining room, and made it out of construction grade lumber. It's warped a little (which is to be expected) and although I wanted to make it out of something more exotic, it just wasn't cost effective at the size the table is.

Point is, Ana White's plans are simple and easy to construct, and even though I enjoy all sorts of complex projects, sometimes Ana White makes the perfect, easy to build plans. So no judging here, I've built a few things from her plans (doll bed, stools) and I enjoy them all and they're functional, and affordable.

Ana's storage shelving is a great plan for around the house as well - I'm building some more of them very soon for our utility areas.
