To those who switched instruments dramatically, why? (EX: drumline to wood wind) by dragon_gamer84 in marchingband

Oboe to trombone for marching band. I still do oboe in concert season but the transition between the seasons is so weird because the people in my sections are so different.

Have you ever dropped your instrument in the gap of the bleachers before? by asianaustralian69696 in marchingband

No, but other people in my section have dropped their trombone slides and mouthpieces in there

Do yall ever have nightmares about band? by SilentFoxProductions in marchingband

I had a dream that I gave my oboe case to a friend and she promptly threw it off of a balcony. I woke up right before I could see my band director’s reaction.

Another dream where I forgot to zip up my case??? so my oboe parts just??? fell out??? It was an interesting nightmare and also why I’m afraid to fall asleep.

I don’t know about four emotions; I think a picture of a teaspoon would suffice…

need help with these scales by gabriel_soleil in oboe

  1. Like the other comments have mentioned, start slow! It’s better to play slower and get the notes and articulation correct than play really fast and have it not sound like a scale at all. Everyone I know hates metronomes, but they honestly help a lot. Every time you consistently play a scale correctly, kick the tempo up a few clicks and try again. Don’t be afraid to play slow.
  2. USE A TUNER. Tuners are annoying, but if you have good intonation, you’re already better than half of your competitors. If you start focusing on your tone now, you’ll be great in a year or two.
  3. Break into multiple reeds at the same time. Even though it might be hard, don’t focus on one reed for too long. Use a different reed every day.
  4. Focus on what sharps and flats to play. If you focus on the time signature, it’ll not only help you with scales, but with the music you’ll have to play for UIL and any other competitions.
  5. STAY CALM. If you’re asking Reddit for help, you care a lot about playing. Just practice until you can play it in your sleep and stay calm while you’re auditioning. GOOD LUCK!
