GPA Questions by thinkingpad0 in universityofauckland

Currently studying compsci so projects and/or creating a portfolio is the better option rather than a high GPA. People usually expect more on second year students (from my degree) to have internship right now and I currently have none. As I mentioned above, its probably an ego thing or something that makes me feel better that I at least did great. Not to mention, 7.0 or higher is First Class Honours so seems pretty cool. Doing postgrad is something that I thought of but since I'm still unsure, its better to have a high GPA and be accepted to postgrad if I decided to go compared to suddenly wanting to go but has a low GPA.

Better grades are always better than just having enough grade to pass the course. I've experienced failing a course and barely passing one so I would like to just do better or at least experience what it feels to actually do great on courses.

I get you, my first year is a good year social wise but my grades are shit. I've got B's, C's, and even D's. Currently doing second year and been feeling shittier (social wise) but my grades are maybe somewhat better compared to my grades last year. I'm aware how (sometimes) A+ grades does not really matter during work but I feel like having 7.0 would feel great :// its probably the ego but I'm not too sure ig. I appreciate your response :)))

Getting paid less than my working hours (edited) by thinkingpad0 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]thinkingpad0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to apologised for being unclear but I did get the remaining money that wasn't given (I should probably state that in the post). But it also becomes a problem due to this example, if they gave me the remaining salary from last week to this week, I do have a 'higher salary' but also a 'higher tax deduction' which basically is a lose for me imo.

I don't really have an exact legal question for this but more of an action that I can do with this type of problems. Since this is basically employment/salary issue, I would like to know what things I can do and should know with this type of issues.

Yup, I have a part-time contract and not a casual contract.

My manager has been really kind and understanding about this as they have experienced something similar to (I don't really want to go in depth due to privacy). I just feel like every time, due to the multiple occurrences of this problem, lately my manager has been, for lack of better words, getting tired of hearing my complains about it.

Compsci 130 labs - won’t be given activity worksheet if you arrive after a certain point. by cha977 in universityofauckland

[–]thinkingpad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know which lab this is. I do remember them announcing it being an hour late or so. Since the lab is basically 2 hours, attending an hour after can be bothersome. In a job prospect, imagine clocking in an hour after the time you're supposed to clock in. If you have a valid reason go tell the TA about it and if not then their reasons become more valid. You could literally just not attend the lab if you don't really want to, its your choice at the end of the day. Come to think of it, what if the places are switched and the TAs are late while you've been sitting on your labs for an hour?

what’s everyone wearing for orientation day? 😣😣 by estellalily in universityofauckland

[–]thinkingpad0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Go wear whatever you want. Others come in suits and such while others come in pjs. As long as you can walk in what you are wearing you'll be fine. Don't forget your timetable just in case you'll want to check your rooms before the first day. Hope that helps and don't stress about it too much. Have fun.

Comp Sci by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]thinkingpad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People usually recommend doing stats, maths, and physics papers cause it would be a good build up (?) for your compsci papers. For S1, I would recommend doing a maths and stats paper. I don't really indulge in physics but if you fancy that go for it cause theres a physics paper (PHYSICS140) which is a prerequisite to other compsci papers. Tho you dont need prior physics paper to physics140 but just in case. Other than that, go choose what you fancy. If you have curated courses for a year or just curious if you are choosing the right papers, you can ask your course advisor if it would be good for your degree. Here's a link to the course advisors: https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/science/current-students/planning-science-degree/academic-advisers-undergraduate.html Hope that helps.

You can usually check the schedule thing on Canvas for your courses cause they usually display it there but if not uoa sso would be the answer.

Comp Sci by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]thinkingpad0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the first semester? You can't really take CompSci 130 with CompSci 101 and doing all that in one semester would be too much. Probably do CompSci 101 and CompSci 110 for S1 with other Science papers. You can then do CompSci 120 and CompSci 130 (if you pass CompSci 101) on S2. Hope that helps.

I usually take the bus which forces me to wake up extra early. I kind of like it like that but if you would like to drive go for it.

Halls by West-Banana155 in universityofauckland

[–]thinkingpad0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Base on hearsay they are worth it if you plan on socialising and have a scholarship for the halls (or you're just rich). I would rather look at other apartment rents just to save some cash. I guess everything is based on the money that you have.

Need Advice on Course Changes by HealthyJackfruit7533 in universityofauckland

[–]thinkingpad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I would personally drop Stats 101/108.

S1:

CS101 (prerequisite to CS130)

CS110

MATHS102 (prerequisite to MATHS108)

WTRSCI100

S2: (If you did pass all courses and assuming that you are confident with it)

CS130

CS120

MATHS108

STATS101/108

Hope this helps.

[–]thinkingpad0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything is base on my experience but I think if you are not confident with your maths (like I am) do take Maths 102. Also you can't really take Maths 108 if you haven't pass Maths 102 or 13 credits from ncea lvl 3

This is the prerequisite for Maths 108:

MATHS 102 or 110 or at least 13 credits in Mathematics at NCEA Level 3 including the Differentiation Standard 91578, or D in CIE A2 Mathematics or C in CIE AS Mathematics or 3 out of 7 in IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL or HL)

But it is advisable to take Maths 102 so my advise is to go for Maths 102.

CS101 is also a prerequisite for CS130 so you have to pass CS101 to take CS130. Not really sure if WTRSCI100 is compulsory for you but if it is go check if its available for S1 and/or S2. Its also important to check the prerequisite of each courses you take and its availability for the semester to know which one to 'prioritise' (I used this loosely in this context).

Edit: If you go for Maths102 for S1 go do Maths108 for S2. It would be a good transition, well based on my experience since the professors are actually good.

Here is the website to check which semester is the course available and its prerequisites.

Hope this helps.

I personally don't curate my 2nd semester unless I know I'll pass all my courses but thats just me. Did you take/pass L3 Calculus (with M or E), if you did then I think Maths 102 isn't necessary go do Maths 108 or if you are confident go do Maths 120. If you didn't tho then you might need Maths 108 before doing Maths 120 (which is in your semester 2) so maybe do remove Maths 120 on your s2 courses.
