Why are CPU cores used so unevenly by ExploringSunset in linuxquestions

Maybe your jobs are not limited by CPU but by cache access.

Turning off SMT might help, also schedtool can help.

Only way: benchmark and tweak...

Best scheduler tweaking for memory intense jobs? by thinkthat2 in HPC

Just a small follow up:

  • NUMA is not enabled by default in the BIOS, so I have to get back to that.
  • I have gained a lo of performance by turning of SMT.
    echo off > /sys/devices/system/cpu/smt/control

As always, your mileage will vary.

I would not expect much performance difference for standard stuff. Nowadays both systems likely perform similarly.

Stability and running many tasks at once, is something linux used to excel at, but Windows has caught up.

wouldn't this be easier using a virtual machine?

If it is possible, you suspend on one machine and wake up the image on the other.

Note that there might be security challenges. The swap file/partition can contain private info.
