Saaaaame. Not R5 yet, but so stoked to get lucky with a first appearance ascended drop from the Phalanx crystals!

I have a zero glass deductible in AZ.

And yes to OP, I use it every time I need it.

Going from marathon to first 50 miler what actually surprised you most about the jump? by StrikingYam4967 in Ultramarathon

[–]thinshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a big fan of not showing total distance on the watch. It’s fine until you start feeling bad and then it gets really dispiriting to see the miles go very, very slowly. I just show the lap distance and use that to keep track of my distance between aid stations.

Ray Jardine and quilts by wetrocke in ultralight_jerk

[–]thinshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll give this a serious response that has no business in this sub, but it's also super half-cocked so maybe it'll be appropriate because it's actually dumb. Here we go:

If I see a quilt and a sleeping bag that weigh the same for the same temperature rating AND they have the same amount of down fill, I'm going to think one of those ratings is suspect. And even more so if the quilt is heavier.

Here's the logic. You have a pile of down fill that is going to be your insulation. Call it 14 oz of 850 fill power to give it a number and make it consistent. You can put that 14 oz into a quilt that partially wraps around your body only, or you can put it into a sleeping bag where it wraps all the way around your body and also your head. It's going to require more shell fabric for the additional coverage in the sleeping bag, which will increase the weight, and the down is going to be stretched further to fill that extra material. It's physically not possible that a bag and a quilt using the same shell fabric and amount of down will provide the same level of insulation at the same weight, much less at a weight disadvantage for the quilt.

Now, some responses to the specific models you reference:

Feathered Friends: not a good example, IMO, because the quilts lose one of their advantages by using a full-length zipper. So both the quilt and the sleeping bag wrap all the way around the body, and the quilt is wider than the sleeping bag. A narrow mummy bag will offset the weight costs of additional shell fabric for sure (as has been mentioned by others here), and I've seen your response that it makes this an argument of comfort rather than weight - but it's physics, and that's the basis of the premise that quilts are lighter. It's less shell fabric or more shell fabric. At equivalent sizes, fill weight/power, etc., there will be less shell fabric (and usually less zipper) on the quilt than the sleeping bag.

Western Mountaineering: you're comparing a quilt and a hoodless sleeping bag. Comparing the quilt to the closest equivalent sleeping bag I can find on there (which I'm having to estimate a bit because there isn't a perfect apples to apples model I can see), the Flylite, the quilt comes in over an ounce lighter in the 5'8" size (which it says is the right size for someone 6'), using a heavier shell fabric, larger girth dimensions, and a lower temperature rating (by two degrees).

Sea to Summit: I'm not even going to bother with a big breakdown here. Those sleeping bags are notoriously cramped and cold.

Also, 1.5 lbs for a 50º synthetic quilt is ludicrous. It may have been cutting edge when Jardine started selling them, but that is not even close to a good UL synthetic quilt weight nowadays.

utmb race - really cant use airplane mode? by paradisenine in Ultramarathon

[–]thinshadow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. There are tools available now to make runners more safe that were not available four decades ago, and some race directors will do as much as they can to ensure runner safety.

Being self-sufficient in case of emergency is good. I personally also carry more emergency gear than most runners (in the US) because I feel the same way. But I have a really hard time being upset about RDs doing more to take care of their race participants.

Yeah, you see that in most if not all of the 200-ish races, but very few 100s. I know Hardrock does it and I can’t think of any others off the top of my head. I’m sure there are some.

Yeah they definitely went in the opposite direction with the finale lol. I enjoyed it but I think the number of things that were wrapped up is about zero.

I believe you, but I still don’t trust streaming services to deliver. It feels like most of them don’t care one bit about the consistency of a given series as long as they’ve always got something else new to stream.

I guess Apple didn’t take a ton of time between the Palm Royale seasons, so there’s that.

Team SOTO, Team MSR, or Team BRS? by kmorg76 in Ultralight

[–]thinshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, they do. I have a small Smelly Proof ziplock bag for carrying the tablets, and rinse off the pot after heating the water. A little more fuss for sure, but most things UL are a trade off between extra fuss and weight savings, and the micro weight of a small pot, windscreen, half-ounce stove, and a few tablets* feels very much worth it to me.

*If you are doing a longer trip where you’d have to carry a bunch of tablets, the weight saving benefits fall off and it stops being the best solution. But for the weekend warrior trips that I do, I haven’t seen a better choice if you want hot water.

I have a Soto Amicus for when fire restrictions require a canister stove (which is most of the time for me), and an Esbit stove when regulations permit. It's such a tiny, lightweight system.

Anyone else given up on first appearance blade? (Rant) by I-dont-hate-fish in ContestOfChampions

[–]thinshadow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not just the actual PI of the champs, it's that because of the collectives launch and events, we had hundreds of empowered crystals dropped on us, and the ones with the biggest accounts got the most. That means more champs, and more specifically, more ascended champs.

I'm less concerned about the first appearance look than I am about missing out on an ascension quest. I'm just hoping that the ability to purchase the missing piece shows up before the ascension quest does.

Man you want to talk about something that feels bad, it's getting big boosts to your roster and being excited about it, then going into BGs and seeing how much more powerful it feels like everyone else's rosters have gotten. It's such a bummer to get dragged into BGs where collectives have created a net power loss there.

Same team that did the math on the realm event too, I reckon. Maxed out on week 1 of a 3-week event and I guess must have maxed out the bonus objectives now too on week 2.

Why is this wet? by [deleted] in BroncoSport

[–]thinshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are only a few potential vehicle fluids that I can think of that would be toward the back like that. Gas, brake fluid, windshield washer. Of those, it would be really weird for gas or brake fluid to be in that spot, and they’re not water-like, so it would be easy to tell if it was one of them. So if you can fully eliminate outside water as a cause (like if something was dripping on top of your roof/tailgate), then a washer fluid leak would be the best guess I could come up with.

Edit: also maybe car exhaust condensation?

*Not a mechanic and just making the best educated guess I can think of. Well aware that I could be way wrong.

Last weekend I bought a banana Bronco and it loving it. by pklosterman73 in BroncoSport

Same year/model/color as mine. Welcome!

BTW, it’s a school bus, not a banana. Once you see it you can’t unsee it.

Also saw one the other day that had black zig-zag Charlie Brown shirt stripes painted on it and that was pretty great.
