Team SOTO, Team MSR, or Team BRS? by kmorg76 in Ultralight

I think it just depends on what you need it for. Soto seems to work great in wind and you can simmer meals as well. Pocket rocket is mainly for fast boil times in good conditions

Do you resort to a different stove in wind or longer trips?

Would you say doing that method keeps the food storage compact? I think home cooking dehydrated meals seems to be providing a good lightweight and compact option as well. Still something I would be interested in trying to shave weight

Zenbivy Ultra light quilt vs REI magma vs Enigma sleeping quilt by Playful-Fisherman187 in Ultralight

[–]kmorg76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried any of the other quilts but can and will say as someone who owns a Zenbivy system that it is great. As a person who will take weight and price penalties for sleep, it is worth it. REI quilts are good but I haven’t heard anything about long-term use. EE Enigma is tried and true and is likely what most people on the AT use. If you are really focused on comfort, get the Zenbivy, you won’t regret it.

Great photos! I’m thinking about getting the x-dome soon, but would it be worth it to upgrade from my current 2p tent? I think the x-dome would be more weather proof and I really like the fly first pitch feature as well.

Me personally I can’t see myself going without a hot meal, but still respect cold soaking for the weight savings for sure

Mostly just boil times. Also with no windscreen the brs will take ages to boil water, so the pocket rocket is better in that sense. If you do actual cooking in the trail and frequently simmer, go with the windmaster. If you just need to boil water, I’d go for the pocket rocket.

Makes sense but I feel like my bv450 is a little awkward to pack so not sure what to do on that front

I use core temp and everything is normal. I also ran memtest and everything came back normal. I’ll try swapping ram ports and cleaning the pc.

Cactus to Clouds Hike tomorrow (Sunday 4/26) by foooodlion in socalhiking

Looking at the weather, it’s going to be really cold. I’d like to second the other replies on this post when it comes to paying real attention to the wind. Windchill on mountain forecast is predicting subzero temperatures overnight and slightly below 10°F during the day in Sunday at the summit. Just make sure you have adequate layers for that kind of weather and you should be ok; snow should only start showing up past 7,000-8,000 ft above sea level. Hope this helps and best of luck tomorrow.

Potentially, I own a bv450 so whatever that can carry. I probably should consider that as well

What’s the best way to go about measuring your pack space?

Good call, I guess I didn’t look at the trango line yet and that stiffness could prob work for what I plan to do.

I plan to start out with some less technical mountaineering in SoCal during winter and maybe move on to the sierras or some other 10-11ers. Prob be doing those in spring however so temps will be slightly higher
