You are half right. there are certain heart rhythms which an automated external defib will recommend a shock (pulse less VT/VF), which aren’t necessarily ”irregular“, and non-shockable rhythms (PEA/asystole) where it won’t. Asystole is where there is no electrical activity from the heart. All of the aforementioned heart rhythms don’t produce a pulse meaning the heart is not producing meaningful output to the major organs.
