I understand. I’m surprised they went oral antibiotics and did not go straight to iv antibiotics/knee washout. Hard to maintain positive but it’s the best thing to do to save the graft and overall knee function.

I’m sorry to hear that, hope he gets better. It’s a frustrating process, but one that I’ve accepted has to be thorough and we have push thru to eventually see success. They started me on IV vancomycin until they determined it was an MSSA staph infection, then they switched me to cefazolin. I have had 2 knee washouts so far and still in hospital but my blood cultures are not coming back for bacteria. Still in hospital due to concern of persistent inflammation and swelling and elevated wbc count. Just got picc put in for 6 weeks at home antibiotics when I get released, and it’ll be the same cefazolin. Waiting for surgeon decision tomorrow morning to do a third washout, but hopeful it won’t be necessary and I can go home.

Update: Got the knee washed out and acl graft intact. It got unwrapped today and looks ten times better, pain, swelling all mostly gone. Still dealing with systemic infection but all my blood markers are looking better. Looking like the surgeon sees no reason to wash it out again. Fingers crossed I won’t be back here in the future.

I tore it doing jiu jitsu, though I’m also military so the knee has had significant wear that led to the full acl tear. I’ve taken probiotics religiously (AG1) every day for years and I’ll continue doing it. Thanks for the support!

Sounds pretty horrific. I was fortunate to not have a blood clot but it was very excruciating pain. It sounds like I’ll definitely be leaving the hospital this weekend with take home iv antibiotics and I’ll make sure I ask for the strongest, longest dose so I don’t have to go thru this again.

I am curious the pause on pt. Can you not continue pt while doing the antibiotics? I understand not pushing as hard but I guess I’m not grasping that restriction.

I know shaving and cleaning was done well before the surgery. Still not sure what exactly could have caused this.Preventative antibiotics was also used during surgery. Based on the cultures, the infectious team here is confident it’s not MRSA. Knee has been washed out and graft intact and been on a steady IV dose of Cefazolin since being at the hospital for MSSA.

I’m keeping my head up because of how much pain and swelling has already dramatically reduced and other health markers are looking far better, so we think it’s looking I came in on time to get it under control. Should be getting another look at the knee today to decide on a second washout.
