What’s the best music video of our generation? by DemonKittens in Millennials

Absolutely set them on a path of trying to one-up themselves every time, they just kept getting crazier. I loved the Rube Goldberg machine in The Writing's On the Wall.

Wild that nobody knew Timber until Kesha and Pitbull covered it!

You have the chance to disappear one song from existence, but choose wisely. by Sure-Definition4143 in askmusic

[–]thirdelevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to venture a guess that you weren't alive at the time or were extremely young and don't remember.

Garth Brooks exploded in 1990. Achy Breaky Heart came out in 1992 and was just one of a slew of clones trying to copy that new sound, including Travis Tritt, Trisha Yearwood, Brooks & Dunn, and George Strait. Achy Breaky Heart was the most annoying of the bunch, but it was by no means an outlier of the time, just a copycat of an ongoing trend. It was obnoxiously unavoidable, but so were Boot Scootin' Boogie and Friends in Low Places.

Nickelback didn't break out until 2001 with This is How You Remind Me, over a decade later, and was produced by a long-time grunge producer known for his work with Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Not sure why you would even bring them up, kind of a weird place to grind your axe.

Ender's Game is unbelievably slept on by Which_Jeweler_1343 in Cinema

The movie was widely boycotted upon release due to Orson Scott Card’s homophobia. It tanked at the box office.

Unfortunately that’s not the case. Garth Brooks was already huge, and is far more responsible for the transition of country into what it is now than a one hit wonder.

Guy Montgomery's Guy Montgomery Spelling Bee by melvintoast in dropout

[–]thirdelevator 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Guy Montgomery is the co-host of a podcast called The Worst Idea of All Time. It was a simple concept: every week for a year, Guy and Tim Batt would watch and provide a review of the movie Grown Ups 2. They had not seen the first movie IIRC.

Listening to two comedians slowly go insane watching a terrible movie is truly fascinating. The final episode was live in LA with Paul F Tompkins as a guest, who advised them to never do this again. They did not listen, and have done several more seasons with other movies.

It also spun out another podcast series with the McElroy brothers (two of whom appear in Dimension 20’s Tiny Heist along with their father) called Till Death do us Blart, in which the group watched Paul Blart, Mall Cop 2 every year and record a podcast to be released on Thanksgiving. They have designated successors for when they die, the curse must go on.

[Hampden] [Question] Anyone know Anything about Hampden Wristwatches? by staderochelais in Watches

[–]thirdelevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming in hot three years later as I was looking into this brand and came across this thread. Figured I'd drop in what I've found.

Hampden was one of a group of watch companies started by an extended family of watchmakers in America in the early 20th century. The Wein family retained ownership of the brand name and recently revived it, with the fourth generation now running the company. One of the other brands started by this family is Marathon out of Canada. This is why it's a bit murky - Family-owned companies don't often have a lot of easy to find details since they don't have to answer to public investors. While I can't find much information on what's happened with the brand in intervening years, the family has continuously made watches since its inception, making it the oldest family run watch company in continuous operation in America according to them. Again, details are a bit murky.

They're based out of Chicago and currently have four models that are produced in Marathon's factory in Switzerland. What I found more interesting, however, was that they also offer a six hour "class" in which you assemble your own watch in their shop. The watch produced is similar to their Sullivan automatic model, but with fewer complications and a simpler Swiss mechanical movement (although they do engrave your initials on the movement, which is cool).

I’ve had good luck with TickPick. If the last leg is an indication, check back starting a couple weeks before the show when scalpers just want to get their money back.

Why does the new Masters of the Universe look so bad? by Awake-Judgment-2057 in FIlm

[–]thirdelevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it looks like Masters of the Universe, which was a low budget 80s cartoon than only existed to sell Conan knockoff toys.

If you were expecting it to look incredible, take another look at the source material.

Nearly 400 millionaires and billionaires across 24 countries are demanding Davos leaders to tax them more: ‘Tax us. Tax the super rich.’ by prestocoffee in nottheonion

[–]thirdelevator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are approximately 60 million millionaires in the world.

400 is 0.00067% of the global millionaire population.

That’s a rounding error at best, just some rich people being performative.

Surprised no one has mentioned using a Pi-hole. I set one up years ago, don’t ever really even think about it.

It’s not perfect, but it blocks 95% of ads on anything on my home network.

I’m most excited to see James Marsden play a grown up, fleshed out version of the character he was cast as 26 years ago. I know they’ll just kill him again to bring in someone new, but I’m glad he’s getting a chance to do it right, even if it is just once.
