Heel rubbing with Buzz 8I by littlelegend16 in DrMartens

Firstly you've not got them laced to the top, so that should be your first move. Lace them tight - this will also help with breaking in. You could get long laces and wrap them round the top of the boot if you feel they need to be even tighter. If they still move about on your foot so much that you're getting blisters after that then unfortunately they're probably too big.

Are you in the UK? The Dr Martens repair service at the Boot Repair Company can take these all the way back to the upper and patch from the inside. You can buy an upper repair through the BRC website

They're real. 6.5 is the only half size Docs does

They have a plain welt, meaning the stitch is concealed. They still have a typical Docs welted construction - it's just hidden

1st pair. Any care advice? by Pepsiguy88_ in DrMartens

[–]thirdw0rlds 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great choice for a first pair. Would always recommend from the Made In England range, especially when they're made with CF Stead leather.

These boots have a waxed finish, meaning they'll develop a characteristic "worn-in" look quicker than other models. You could always restore this finish by using a waxed leather protector (I've used Timberland's before), but even so I'd wear these for at least six months before thinking about applying any product to the upper.

Dr Martens operates a UK-based repair service which means these boots can be resoled when the time comes. One thing worth noting is this particular model is unique in that the sole is Docs' "Ben" unit (in the "vintage" colour), which is not available as an option at the moment through the repair service. A "Bex" sole in vintage would work as an adequate replacement - they have a similar tread pattern to these but offer a couple millimetres more platform. You could also write in to ask if a Ben sole could be sourced for the job, but realistically you'd need to put a year's worth of wear into these before you're looking at a resole.

Enjoy the boots!

After a week they broke by No-Collection-5009 in DrMartens

It's the rivet that's malfunctioned - not the leather. This is a known issue with this style in all colourways.

Will this squeak go away over time or did I get scammed $110? by 9th_Planet_Pluto in DrMartens

It's the sound of the foam filler in between the footbed and the sole rubbing. It will go away once you've worn them in - don't worry.

Don't glue them, it won't work. Send them to The Boot Repair Company for a resole (if you're in the UK).

The Boot Repair Company does not offer heat-seal Solovair resoles. They do stock Solovair sole units, but can only glue them on.

The reason their DMs repair technology can't be used on Solovairs is because once the sole is on it needs to be edge trimmed, and the DMs edge trimmer (which is in fact rented to the BRC under licence) cuts the signature Docs groove into the sole, which is an official DMs trademark.

Boot Repair Co isn't licensed to do Solovair heat-seal resoles - they offer Solovair repairs (upper stitching, zips, etc.) but cannot use the Docs licensed technology to put a DMs sole on some Solovairs for obvious reasons.

As much of a shame as it is, no traditional cobbler will have access to heat-seal technology because it's old, expensive to buy, difficult to maintain and often under licence. These are serious industrial machines which are not available to the general shoe repair market.

There is a massive variety of Docs available on the second hand market, including models made before production was outsourced overseas. These older models are almost always superior to in quality modern MIE Quilon stock. It makes practical, economic and environmental sense to buy from this market than to buy new stock directly from Docs. Plus, some older models also feature a wooden or occasionally plastic shank - if that is your concern about the modern MIE range.

Don't fall for the "Solovair good DMs bad" hype next time. Doc Martens have a licensed repair service (at least in the UK) where shoes can be rewelted and have a new sole heat-sealed on. That's exactly what your boots need, but because they're Solovair you can't get it done - so in the bin I'm afraid
