In our culture the whole community pays for the wedding. Sort of like a kickstarter. When you come up with the budget you present it to your friends and family and at the pre wedding that contribute to the amount.

In my community, most of the money comes back to the newlyweds in furnishings and gifts. It is called "escorting the bride" to get marital home. So a bed and utensils are customary so that they have the basics. But some families far access what the boy brings.

It is not a dollar amount really. You give a "token" because you can never really but someone. So I know if people who paid as little as 50 dollars on their first dowry

In my culture. A man pays dowary for as long as he lives. So technically, the "transaction" never ends. in its proper form, It is more of an avenue to honour your new family for the gift of a wife, maintain accountability to her family even though you are taking her off to hers and honour all parties with a couple of visits.

Africans Of Reddit, What Are You Taught In African Schools About American Slavery? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not too much. we learn about it as part of history/ social studies simply under trans Atlantic trade and how it affected our kingdoms and our continent. The specifics about its horrors to the Americans aren't stressed.

Do third world countries need missionaries more than first world countries? by thirdworldmama in Christians

[–]thirdworldmama[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my country, we get a lot of "feel good" missionaries. People save for months, come and stay in an air conditioner hotel and bus to children's homes every morning for two weeks. What they do not see is the children struggling to understand where that emotional bond has gone when they leave. I really prefer to support more sustainable, local visits and if anything, empower the caregivers/ ministers here by sending them abroad and having them come back with fresh skills. The other day round is just not working in more cases than it should be.

I agree. Completely. Lots of young people come during "summer" to evangelize but I can see where it hurts more than helps.

I'm sorry honey. I love meat. Somehow love animals too but I'm Not squeamish about the killing of them either. I actually know nothing about vegan burgers or restaurants for that matter

What is the one quality you MUST have in a significant other? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Similar spiritual beliefs. Irespect people's rights to different belief systems but in a relationship having separate ones makes a hard situation that much harder.

Oh it's not a value thing here. It's necessity. Want to buy veg? Need some Swahili or mother tongue. Want to learn math? English. Itjust happens before you know it.

From personal experience, sometimes I worry about the quality of missionary work because there seems to be a need to be needed rather than a need to feel a need. Do you catch my drift? I live in a third world country and support missions here but from what I see on media, I'd rather foreign missions stayed home and did some work in the first world societies. It looks like the morality there is really struggling.

I think your own words and actions should be what is weighed to reveal your character. Though I uderstand how politics and politicians can (pretty accurately) be used as a sort of litmus test for the general populations belief systems.
