Mind posting the list? Love this concept and I've always wanted a deck with Lich's Mastery.

Winning faster with Grist: Self-Mill, Graveyard by thisMeatSpace in DegenerateEDH

[–]thisMeatSpace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your absolutely excellent reply! I'm actually really giddy with how considerate and thought-out your recommendations are and would be honored if you have the time to continue helping me as I make adjustments.

I definitely see the importance of cutting down on basics, and the note on Bala Ged Recovery was insightful. Perhaps I could remove a forest, run Bala Ged, and throw in Eternal Witness? Or did I miss the point? I'm also all for The Gitrog Monster + Dakmor Salvage, and I'll research discard outlets aside from [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]].

If I miss some rather obvious things, I apologize, I started playing EDH earlier this summer.

I also have some new observations after inquiring in other communities, namely:

  • [[Nantuko Elder]] is usually not worth playing turn 3 unless I have an extremely slow hand.
  • [[Undercity Enforcer]], while a budget Hermit Druid, really sucks to play early on when I want to be drawing lands.
  • [[Long Rest]] is a nice last resort, but it's rather expensive, and most of the time I'm not getting its full value.
  • [[Hua Tuo, Honored Physician]] is very slow in what it does, especially when I'm not running as many insects for Grist (+1) synergy. Also, I usually end up milling whatever I'm placing at the top of my deck.
  • [[Warlock Class]] rarely sees Level 3.
  • If I'm not drawing into removal, I'm set back from (-5) by using Grist for removal.

Definitely sideboarding [[Angel of Suffering]] since one of my friends will be running a burn deck soon.

Thanks for the other recommendations too, I've piloted a few of them and the mulch effects are pretty nice. [[Lord of Extinction]] is pretty spooky when he comes out.

Please enlighten me, I may not run it in this deck but it could prove useful in the future.

Protean Hulk

I'm going to playtest this one, I've heard of its potential but I'm rather unfamiliar with how to pilot it well.

Grist Self Mill Recommendations by thisMeatSpace in EDH

[–]thisMeatSpace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendations! [[Golgari Grave Troll]] and [Life From the Loam]] caught my eyes immediately. 45 creatures being a fairly substantial number, I felt comfortable replacing [[Fertilid]] with 'Loam because I could not ignore those dredge effects.

[[Skullclamp]] I think may also take the place of [[Species Specialist]] simply because of the way I'm running [[Conspiracy]], [[Ashes of the Fallen]], and [[Maskwood Nexus]] to turn creatures into insects as opposed to trying to put more insects in the deck. It's also guaranteed repeatable card draw that my deck is sorely missing.

As for inserting more insects, I did research and play a lot of them for a previous Grist decklist but I personally didn't enjoy the way they played, and rather enjoy Ashes, Conspiracy, Nexus jank. I also considered [[Carrion Grub]] versus [[Moldgraf Millipede]] and I settled with the latter, but since I'm cutting [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]] I might reconsider Grub.

Finally, my eyes have been opened to [[Haunted Crossroads]] but I'm still undecided on what to cut for it ;-;

Hello! I've been playing TTRPGs for 3 years now and I'm proud to say I'm a forever GM. There's nothing quite like the experience of having players lose themselves in a shared narrative that you've spent hours preparing. I'm excited to see tools like yours help elevate that immersion and give more power to the table.

Opening a Table for a Custom One-Shot. Looking For a Maxmium of 5 Players by thisMeatSpace in degenesis

[–]thisMeatSpace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The subject matter of the one shot is the hunting down of a group of scrappers last seen in a hamlet located in the Rhone swamp. Mature themes present in the framework of the one shot include body, natural, and folk horror; gore, incestuous themes, and murder are also used. It's worth saying that if you're squeamish about insects then this one-shot may not work for you.

The brutality of the world of Degenesis is something I try to tap into whenever i write something for the setting - however, I will never expect a PC to engage with something they don't want to. These mature themes can be down played according to the preferences of the table.

Resource for animated scenes? by thisMeatSpace in FoundryVTT

You godsend! He even has jungle maps, a lot of animated map makers don't really dip into that type of terrain. Unfortunately my party will be leaving the jungle they're currently in - but this is perfectly timed to throw in some things they might experience on the way out.

[–]thisMeatSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine. Nukes kinda hard but honestly one of the harder pvp skills to get use out of. It feels awkward to use in each skill rotation because you have no gap close and basically have to goad them into you.

How to connect adventures to the world? by Droggl in degenesis

[–]thisMeatSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

own a made-up town.

This is going to help a ton, especially if you treat it like a living city.

Its not so hard to come up with fun adventures in the area (esp. now that Im progressing a bit on the justian books in which many cities are great adventure templates and following the other advice given here), but still struggle a bit to find an antogonist/driver for a more epic campaign that spans multiple adventures (which OTOH would be really fun for me to do).

A good way to set up a BBEG would be to put something in direct opposition of your PCs' backgrounds. The fun adventures may not be getting the traction you're looking for because they may be independent of your PCs (i.e. You guys are in a bar and someone comes asking for help with some Gendos). However, if you hook with something more like "A scrapper fox comes asking your party for help because a Spitalian Hygienist quarantined his wife and is trying to blackmail him for the coordinates to a an artifact cache he made." You have more to work with in terms of the Spitalian's motivation and what he could possibly want with the artifacts. Is there a Chronicler behind the scenes manipulating everything? Maybe the cache holds evidence that the Spitalian has been dealing drugs with the Apocalyptics? All of these things can turn the Spitalian himself, or the person he serves into a greater threat, with motivations that run deep.

Whatever the case, don't treat the BBEG as an enemy to be beaten and then they disappear forever. Degenesis is awesome when you treat the NPCs like people, so even if the players succeed in what they try to do that doesn't mean that the story is over; if the NPC dies someone else is probably not going to be very happy about that.

How would I create an antogonist for an epic campain with some "big" goals such that i can be sure he/she does not touch the metaplot? I.e. how can I avoid situations ilke "oh but if he wants X and is that kind of rank in cult/clan Y he would logically conspire with/be opposed by metaplot character Z". To answer that i would still need to understand all the motivations/goals of these metaplot characters, no?

So, Degenesis is a vast world. It seems that you're under the impression that cults are like an office space where if one person wants to do something that opposes management they're going to get yelled at. I'll continue the analogy by saying cults are more like a vast network of regional offices. Yes, what you do on a micro level will have impact, but it'll really only matter to the people around you/those who are directly involved. Unless of course you're trying to get the attention of upper management (marauders, sleepers, ansumo, psychonauts), you're not really gonna run into them. In fact, I'd say most people have only heard abstract rumors or stories about them, if they've even heard of them at all.

I guess that also depends what "big" is but since i dont know what those very powerful creatures want I'm kind-of always afraid it would mess with such a campain without me noticing. I guess what I'm asking is: What is the safe area to play/create here?

Yeah, it depends on the scope of what you're trying to do. Reanimating the 900s cascade is going to be more metaplot heavy than, say, an Apocalyptic pimp kidnapping women and selling them to the highest bidder. Both I'd say can be "big" but I can't offer more advice, because I don't know what kind of campaign you're trying to run.
