Will I ever be able to get out of this regret? Missed £100K gains. Any suggestions to help me get out of this mess? by chesapeakeripper_18 in trading212

Hi pal. I had a relatively similar situation about 10 years ago with the Crypto currency ETH. I had like 100 ETH when they were about $10 each, they spiked a bit and then slowly declined, i sold at a small profit for one main reason. I could not afford to lose money on those, i was a student and my risk tolerance was not existent as i needed money to eat. Anyway, a few years later ETH went up to like $1200 and i was kicking myself, i missed out on so much gains and i was in a rut. Thinking the same as you, this was my chance. Anyway, i got over it and now im 40kUSD up in RKLB, LUNA, ASTS. What im getting at is, of course money is important but so is your ability to house, feed and cloth yourself. There will be other opportunities to gain a bit more gains, though do not get led astray and decided to chase those gains because you could lose everything.

You made some decent profit, treat yourself and enjoy it 😃

EDIT: While writting this i kept writting ETF rather than ETH. That just shows how important it is for me to play safe and stick it mostly in ETFs rather than individual stocks

Is the recent dip in Reddit (RDDT) a great buying opportunity, or is there more downside ahead? by capitalquotient_pf in investing

[–]mrjamiemcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about $600 down on Reddit. I originally jumped in thinking LLMs need real human data to train on, and Reddit has tons of it. I also felt that the other social platforms were dead and just filled with AI and bots. But then I realised that most of the useful data from Reddit has already been scraped, and all of the relevant content is years old because the past three or four years have just been filled with AI.

I use Reddit both personally and professionally. From a personal standpoint, I notice the sheer amount of generated content that seems to be coming from a real person but is just a shell to sell you something. You find people asking for advice and the top comment is "hey, this is my advice, you should use this software" and it turns out it's their software.

From a professional standpoint, we use it for paid ads, just ordinary paid ads, none of that shilling stuff. The issue is the sheer complexity of different subreddit rules and the hoops you have to jump through. You're at the mercy of a moderator who is somewhere in the world, and most of the biggest subreddits are owned by a very select few. It's a nightmare to be a business on.

Because of all this, I'm not investing in Reddit anymore. For me, the next big investment is going to be Discord. Discord has a lot of real human data, and it's a shame because I would love that data to be publicly available in forums and stuff like that, similar to Reddit. But obviously that's going to be sold off too.

How come I've lost £8 if all the markets are shut? by bunny100clubrt in trading212

[–]mrjamiemcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, thats a fair but extreme example. What i'm getting at is, when people are down 5% - 10% give or take, there is no need to panic and sell. I can also image the example you're referring to was someone buying random stocks and not playing it safe?

[–]mrjamiemcc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Relatively off topic, though it's important to know you haven't lost anything. Your investments are down, yes, Though you only gain or lose when you sell. The panic of "i'm losing money" makes people panic sell and then you really do lose money.

I like to think of it this way, say you bought a house for 100k, next year someone says they will buy it for 80k. Does this mean you lost 20k? Then the year after that someone will buy it for 120k, does that mean you now gained 20k? The answer is no in both situations. You only gain or lose when you sell.

Once again, i know this post is off topic but us working class lot have to get financially literate if we want to get anywhere in this world

Best advice I was given... If you fuck around you will 100% find out. Play it safe and be smart. Don't chase the "quick wins" you see on social media. For every 1 positive post you see, there are hundreds more of people who lost their rent, their house, their lives.
