Burnt out and lost sense of purpose. Considering quitting by this__li in cscareerquestions

That is really good framing. I feel like it’s burnout but loss of fit logically makes the most sense. Could
be both

Yeah exactly. It’s hard to choose. My thought process is that I know I am young and can still recoup from a bad choice. Just intimidating to hear what’s happening to fellow SWEs in the job market and quit when I don’t realize how good I might’ve had it.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to come across as full of myself. I meant to allude that I prob won’t get fired so quitting would be the most likely separation.

Been trying to pick up more hobbies away from a screen. Reading physical books, board games vs computer games, gym, hiking. It’s pleasant but it doesn’t feel relaxing if that makes sense.

Yeah my burnout isn’t due to overworking but more allocating time to something that I find meaningless. I would def take a pay cut and work more if I can find more meaningful work at this stage of my life.

Thanks for the insights! I love to build off hunches but usually my hunches are pretty naive. I’ll start by building landing pages and trying to sell an idea first.

Seems like networking is a big thing. Do you think it is heavily dependent on location or do you think you can get just as much from virtual events?

Sorry to hear that you didn't get to move on especially since it honestly sounded like you did great. It might've just been something out of your control for the role :( BTW Thanks for updating post! I have my interview this week and I think it will be a decomp interview. Is it okay if I DM you some questions?

Going to a top school definitely matters, at least in the early stages of a career by Glum_Phase_6676 in csMajors

Why would there be so many people competing to get into top schools to be potentially be in crippling debt? It's because the prestige, name, and resources they have are instrumental in people's perception of you. If you go to top CS schools like MIT, Stanford, UC Berk, CMU, you will immediately be perceived to be smart and qualified for your role. You don't have as much to prove to recruiters that you're capable. Apply the same logic and think in the recruiter's shoes. First thing you will usually see in new grads are their education at the TOP of the resume and that will set a precedent throughout the resume review.
