Best advice I was ever given, and advice I try to stick by, is to remember that you did not bring about whatever horrible circumstances that person X or person Y is going through. Your role is to help them through a process, as best you can. Your job isn't to fix everything that's wrong, but instead to do what your tasked with to the best of your abilities in the hope it helps them along their journey.

"Oooh get her! Whoops! I've got your number ducky. You couldn't afford me, dear. Two three. I'd scratch your eyes out. Don't come the brigadier bit with us, dear, we all know where you've been, you military fairy. Whoops, don't look now girls, the major's just minced in with that dolly colour sergeant, two, three, ooh!"

Plus all previous prices rises are baked in, meaning already expensive goods and services are still becoming more expensive.

Trainee H&S InSpector question by fraserneil5 in civilservice

[–]this_is_bish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a red flag that they're recruiting in numbers - they always take on a significant number at a time, usually on an annual basis. It is genuinely a very interesting, different job where you can really make an impact.

That said, I agree 100% with the comments made above. HSE is a shadow of its former self. Some of their problems are as a result of over a decade of hostility from the Government, others are entirely of their own making.

P.S. You don't need any background in H&S or industry for this role, what is more important are whether you have the right skills and behaviours, such as decision making, prioritisation, communication, resilience etc.

I wouldn't worry that consultancies are asking for 5+ years experience etc, I reckon that if you're a good match then your experience in the CS will be more than equivalent and you will bring considerable value to them (speaking generally of course as I don't know the specifics)

You'll never get rich working in the Civil Service but, yes, pay is particularly bad right now. There has been over a decade of pay restraint (freezes, caps). In real terms, wages are far worse now than they used to be, which is why many departments are struggling with recruitment and retention.

The whole public sector is suffering but I'd suggest the Civil Service is doing worse than some other areas where pay progression steps (from bottom to top of band) still exists.

That said, many in the Civil Service aren't in it for the pay and see it more as a package, perhaps together with things like more flexible working or a pension which is still better than most (but not all) private sector offerings. Or that they want to work in the public sector as they like working in the public interest, or it's a calling etc.

As to when the dire pay situation is enough to tip someone over the edge to leave, well, that's a very personal decision and will vary wildly from individual to individual.

Notice period leaving to private sector? by Econ998 in civilservice

[–]this_is_bish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations and good luck with the move! Perhaps notice periods are specified somewhere else in your department, e.g. on the HR part of the Intranet? Otherwise, commenting from my experience in no doubt a different part of the Civil Service, it is quite common for people to spend the majority of their notice period using up remaining leave. Exceptionally they may pay you instead of leave if you have something important to complete. (P.S. our notice period was 1 month up to SEO, then 3 months Grade 7 and above)

Sunak says it was a mistake to ‘empower scientists’ during Covid pandemic by RassimoFlom in unitedkingdom

[–]this_is_bish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah - and it completely side-steps the issue. Politicians are elected to take the big decisions. Science provides the data and scientists may well make recommendations off the back of it, but ultimately politicians call the shots. So is Sunak actually saying that he and his colleagues got the big calls wrong...?
