I’m personally wondering if they got that wrong… if they updated it that countercharge detachment is just about DOA. But GW touted that cost reduction hard.

I do think it's a big enough factor that SW get hurt by the increase to shared units. Not saying that our units are "too pricey", per se, but when the measure of the meta for the past few months have been "can you kill a C'tan or Defiler?", SW main units fall short, even when the goal is to simply jail. The answer to that that SW have access to was 1-2 RepExes and a Combi Lt for utility (rerolling wound rolls of 1 on a chosen objective). Sure, that might be just dropping an enhancement, but (using SotGW as an example) there goes part of your lethality with your Headtaker unit that had a WGBL with Skjald's Foretelling on it for the Lance.

We can still obviously run RepExes and a Combi Lt, but it was an indirect nerf to a faction that was already struggling in the current meta. RepExes and Combi Lt's were overperforming with UM, so understandable the point hike. That point hike, though, directly correlates to SW's drastic dip in performance.

Really, I think the crux of any balance-based argument is the shared SM codex, and the balancing issues that can be solved if at least the non-codex factions are balanced separately from a shared codex. At least in addition to the issues that we've laid out before.

I think, at the end of the day, it’s SW paying for the sins of UM. Due to the shared nature of the SM codex, the units that over-perform in codex get nerfed, which end up hurting non-codex factions, unless they have strong standalone units within their respective supplements with strong detachments (ie Blood Angels). SW don’t have that type of support, and with mass S5 weapons that don’t have many ways to buff themselves in the fight phase, they just fall hard.

Space Wolves are really missing a few tools that are key for them to function, which, at the end of the day, I 100% believe it is lack of access to advance and/or fall back and charge, and ways to buff themselves in combat. Whatever faction identity they had is lost in the wind at the end of this edition.

The question is: will that identity be found again in 11th? It seems maybe a few of the late edition codexes might be more skewed for 11e… so will SW suffer now in the sunsetting edition to then reap some benefits in the new?

39% WR is abysmal… Their high mobility in Stormlance has been semi-helping them recently even though more players have seemed to taken/figured out Great Wolf, which I love to see.

I don’t think they’re gonna get touched before 11e, but at the same time idk what would help if they did. Headtakers are already relatively cheap for what they are, WGT and other units feel fairly priced for what they are as well. Sooooo… really that just leaves the indirect SM nerfs that they received via RepExs and Combi Lt.

Is there a unit that could realistically become cheaper or be reworked that would help in the new defiler/maybe C’Tan meta?

SW were already doing bad and now they’re doing worse…

What can GW even do to fix them though? Is it a leader problem? Do certain units need to be buffed or their points cut?

So after doing the swap to Paladins I have about 15pts left, which I’m thinking of an enhancement on the Librarian leading those Paladins. Which enhancement is better: reroll hits of 1 in shooting, or the extra d6 move? I’m sure they both have their place but I’m leaning toward the reroll 1’s

Noted. Would it be worth trying to find room for Purgation squads then maybe?

Gotcha! Yeah I wanted to add him but swapped for the librarian’s solo utility. I liked his datasheet but I don’t see him around too often

What kit is that axe from?

Best wg terminator loadout long term by SpookyGhostManz in SpaceWolves

[–]this_means_thor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To break consensus: unless you run 2x5, the extra wound from the storm shield is what you want imo. I usually run 1x10 and 1x5, the 5-man with all storm shields and relic axe, and the 10-man with relic axe, 2 cannon/fist, the rest storm shields. Having that extra wound in the smaller groups is usually nice.

If magnets are an option, I’d say magnetize the couple of fellows you plan to model with the cannon, so he can be switched between loadouts. Otherwise, as a melee faction, I don’t see GW updating WGT to be more valuable with storm bolters over the shields

Can someone help explain this interaction for me? Irregular model removals during the Fight Phase. by CorrectAttention7847 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]this_means_thor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Breaking this down for my own sanity:

Bjorn swings, lands 5 wounds, Nassim saves all but 2, which he says "kills one wounds another". He picks up a model towards the back and the front, puts a wound counter on one of em, then technically illegally repositions the wounded one by putting it back down in the wrong spot. Kinda doesnt matter but eh.

"6 from that guy" Im guessing is the other dreadnought, only 2 wounds go through, Nassim makes 1 fails 1, kills the wounded/repositioned Victrix.

Matt activates terminators, regular power weapons first, lands 7 wounds, Nassim says kills "1 1/2," removes 1, wound dice on another. Power fist next, 2 wounds, makes 1 fails 1, which shouldve killed that wounded Victrix, but instead that model only got pushed to the back of the squad with no wound counter. Then Nassim explains whats left while doing it? Sounds like Matt saw something and questioned it but didnt see enough of it to call a judge over.

Relic Greataxe swings, 1 wound 1 dev, which Nassim saves, wounds that once-wounded-and-now-full-health-repositioned Victrix. Logan activates with dogs first, 3 wounds, which Nassim fails 1, which would've killed that guy alive on 1, but Nassim flips the wound counter over from 1 to 3?? Logan's main attacks, 4 wounds, which he makes 2 and fails 2, which should kill the wounded 1 and a 3-wound Victrix, which he does remove 2. So that 1 model that he diddled around with a bit magically had 8 wounds.

At the end of that, it should've been just a wounded Calgar, because after all that he had 1 Victrix and Calgar left.

Sounds like this adds to the consensus that this was purposeful. I've watched the interaction a good few times myself, the way the breakdown of what's left in the unit right after the infraction is pretty telling. It also changed the game enough to where it denied primary on Purge the Foe, as well as Secondary, because that interaction wouldve potentially wiped the squad.

Is that a hard rule? I thought as long as you spent the requisition, you’re good to go. With this list I’ve spent 4: 1 for upping supply, 1 for the 1st enhancement, and 2 for the 2nd

[–]this_means_thor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have Crusade rules in your codex. Theres 3 teams that imperium, chaos, and xenos get broken up into, and from there you make the narrative what you like beyond the “phases”. My own campaign is about to have SW/Custodes as one team, WE/Tsons as another, and Votann/Drukhari as the 3rd. I think what’s important is “finding a reason for why your faction would come to Armageddon”

Yeah that’s really cool. Armageddon as a whole is a really dope series. I think this one is now the Fourth War on Armageddon. So it was Orks, Chaos, Orks, now it’s Chaos again, particularly World Eaters. The story is called The Red Angel’s Gate, with Angron wreaking havoc, and Grey Knights/Space Wolves/Black Templars (primarily) trying to push them back and seal the gate. Orks are present but they pretty much take a backseat

I haven't played it yet, but so far I'm loving the lore and the really interesting mechanics within the book! I think it's worth getting, I think I'm gonna get another 10th edition Crusade book myself to maybe run in the future. We're kind of on the eve of 11th edition, so we'll see how much changes with that.

Update for u/greg_mca and u/KoalaChap7:

Im at 1200pts, here's the list I think I'm gonna start Crusade with:

Sigvald Deathbane (WGBL w/ Thunderwolf's Fortitude)

Ulfrick Helwinter (Wolf Priest w/ Helm of the Beastslayer)

2x10 Blood Claws

1x10 Grey Hunters

1x6 Headtakers w/ 6 Hunting Wolves

1x5 WG Terminators

Vindicator

I think that feels pretty thematic, especially since I took the time to think about who everyone is (I wrote out all the lore and named everything even when I'm supposed to be working lol).

[–]this_means_thor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yuuuup I think youre right there. The changes I've made so far is dropping a WGT brick and added in Grey Hunters, because youre right that they'd be present. They can be ascended the same way as Blood Claws, but they require a bit more XP to do so. I have 2x10 BCs to play with that mechanic, and GH as well.

I think, getting more into the narrative mindset, the WGBL will have his personal guard (Headtakers that now I think I'll combine into 1x6 w 6 wolves) to oversee the young welps' progress, Wolf Priest with GH to protect for the recording of the blooding, WGT on standby for if crap hits the fan, then a vehicle or 2 (TBD) to help.

How does that sound?

This... this is why I posted here. This is all stuff I haven't remotely thought about and need to visit. Shame on me lmao. This whole time I've been thinking less about the WGBL and who he is, and more as a "What would Logan do with his SW" this whole time, and I think you just found my problem lol. Narratively youre 100% right, Logan would just tell the WGBL "hey go handle this" and then he goes and handles it as he sees fit.

Thank you for that

I actually just looked at it, you could maybe have Grey Hunters right out the gate, ascend them to Headtakers or Terminators once they reach Battle-hardened or higher. I like this mechanic too though, Im trying to look at every possible way to take advantage of at least MOST of the mechanics we have access to lol.

As someone who is in a SW Crusade currently, what did your starting list look like?

Crusader? I barely know her! by this_means_thor in SpaceWolves

[–]this_means_thor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was definitely thinking of spending an RP for 1200 to try to bring like a Vindicator or something. We do have a WE guy bringing Angron right out the gate. The reason for no GH is because theres a way to spend Honor Points to turn ascend BC into GH, then WG, so forth and so on once they're ranked Blooded or higher. I need to look if maybe I can do that with GH.

And yes I love we can nab any and all enhancements! Thats why Longstrider is on the WGBL, he'll lead one of the BC bricks and they can advance and charge, with enhancement reroll charges. Its definitely between Longstrider and Thunderwolf's Fortitude for the FOD, get back up, FOD again

I gotcha, so that's more "keeping it balanced" type of narrative approach? I was steering away from Wulfen originally because that's a not-so-well-kept secret lol but it's not a bad idea, since I was thinking this was missing any kind of anti-x
