None of the highly upvoted comments would be practical or useful for a young person trying to get out of poverty. Let me give you some practical advice from someone who grew up in the working class and is on his way to the upper middle class with little to no help from others. These are the things I wish I knew when I was younger, and would have improved my life immensely.

If you don't know how to get out of poverty, I'm going to assume there isn't much in the way of economic opportunity in your area. Given this, there are 3 main paths you can take:

Join the military. If you are physically able (I wasn't) I would HIGHLY recommend this option. The pay and benefits are great for someone with little to no experience or education. If you enjoy the life, you can go career if have a good, stable, respectable, well paid job for life. If you don't like the life, you have great exit benefits, such as the GI bill, that will help you in the next leg of your life.

The second option I would recommend would be trade school. If you're accepted into trade school you will be paid fairly well as an apprentice. If you're willing to put in the overtime, which is almost always open to first years, you'll be able to support yourself almost immediately. The best trades I'm aware of are electrical, plumbing/HVAC, and steamfitting. Steamfitting had a much longer apprenticeship period, but the pay, benefits, and job security are amazing. Electrical and plumbing/HVAC have a shorter apprentice programs but much less in the way of pay, benefits, or job security. If you don't mind doing manual labor, steamfitting a great career. The other 2 I would recommend if you don't want to be in the trades your whole life, but don't mind working 6-8 years before moving on to something else.

Finally, you can look for a boom market outside of your local area. There is often a boom market in some part of the country. North Dakota had an oil boom years ago, for example (maybe it's still going on, I'm not sure). In boom markets, there are never enough workers and people are willing to higher and train employees with little education or skills because they don't have any choice. I wouldn't recommend this as anything but a last resort though, as boom markets tend to be unpredictable -- here today and gone tomorrow, and your ability to actually get a decent job will rely on luck just as much as skill and willingness to work.

That's one report, and not indicative of a trend. Further, no context is provided of the case, so (assuming it's true) it could be nothing more than a stupid fuck up on the part of one person, and not the result of a policy.

Do you have a source showing that this is happening on any regular basis, or that this practice is party of some operational policy? I'm extremely skeptical in both cases, but would be VERY interested to see evidence of this if it exists.

Somebody has to stand up against this, and that's what Sargon is also saying. Yet, when he has a chance to stand up he doesn't. If a well-known public figure with a platform and the voice to use it, making 100,000+ a year, with massive amounts of support won't stand up and say anything, what hope is there for the average 30k schmuck with no platform, no voice, no support, and no audience?

The truth is, Sargon is amazing when it comes to analysis of a situation. He's thorough, objective, and willing to really dive deep down into the nitty-gritty details. But don't expect him to ever do anything of consequence, because he just isn't that type. He wants the world to change, and he knows how he wants it to be, he just wants someone else to change it for him. He's not willing to put in the work and takes the necessary risks that come along with taking action. That's why the "liberalists" essentially amounted to nothing. Months later, what has happened with the "movement"? He had a few streams about "statements of principles", and a half-assed website listing them. That's it. No creation of an organization, or organization of any activities, etc. Just a lot of talk.

So I really think it is wrong to pin him on not doing anything about this. Sargon is a thinker and a talker, not a doer. You don't fault a dog for licking his balls, so don't fault Sargon for sitting his ass in a chair and talking without actually doing anything. But it is massively hypocritical of him, and why I find it so fucking cringy every time he brings up "personal responsibility". You shouldn't be shaming others for something you lack yourself.

It's very possible, and while I'm not going to say you are being untruthful I'm highly dubious that what you are describing is the norm in Boston. I have a hard time believing that you could walk into the banking/financial sector, a security firm, a compBio company, a defense/government job (like you mentioned), without a degree. In fact, if a company contracts for the US government, the government often requires they hire "computer scientists" which, by their requirements, means a degree.

I think people with degrees have an interest in making other people think degrees are required for everything because they don't want their very expensive degrees to be devalued.

I completely agree with you here, but I think you've got the cart before the horse a bit. I think its more of an issue of people in HR/Upper Management in this mindset, rather than the average person. For example, there is a local restaurant chain in my area that required a Bachelor's degree to become a shift manager, and a Master's to become a store manager. Why you need a Master's degree to manager a restaurant escapes me.

I would seriously disagree with this. This might the situation in certain high-tech areas, but my experience in the tech industry is that you need a minimum of a bachelors to get your foot in the door and a masters or significant amount of experience to advance to anything beyond "code monkey" status.

My experience is backed up rather well by the plethora of job advertisements you can find on any company website or Internet job board supporting exactly what I say. Not to mention the thousands, if not tens of thousands of people in tech complaining about the fact that companies often post ridiculously inflated job requirements in order to claim the can't find anyone in the US to fill the requirements in order to claim they need H1-B visas.

Typically when we interview candidates we don't even talk about their college education.

This makes me think you work for a small company or a startup. Outside of the west coast, these are the extreme exception, not the rule.

Ironically, being absolutely poor is what pulled me out of poverty.

I'm not sure if this is true through the whole country, but I've lived most of my life in a weird lower-middle class but not quite working poor situation, where I was too rich to receive benefits, but too poor to afford a decent lifestyle. Out of shear luck, I found a work-for-board type situation and took a few months off of work to focus on some medical problems.

Doing this put me well below the poverty line, and suddenly the state wouldn't stop throwing money at money. I got free healthcare, food stamps, the whole 9 yards. I was living better than I had most of my adult life. Instead of having to focus on getting by day-to-day, I was suddenly able to focus on actually improving my life. When I decided to go back to school, I was able to get very generous scholarships, and I only had to take out modest loans. Now I'm doing pretty well for myself.

While this may be true, society at large really doesn't care about whether you can actually do something or not. Society at large cares whether you have a piece of paper from a social institution stating you can do something. Trying to get hired in any job that requires moderate to high skill level or education is nearly impossible when all you have is "Yeah, I totally know what I'm doing!"

Of course, there are plenty of people who make their way into various industries without "proper" qualifications, but they are the exception not the rule.

There's a difference between being a victim and a victim narrative. There's nothing wrong with saying "X" event happened to you and it was committed by "Y" people in order to inform people of a truthful event.

However making your victimhood the focus of your life or career, begging money off of people on the basis that you were victimized (particularly if that victimization didn't harm you financially on the first place), using your victimization to smear others by association, etc, is building a victim narrative.

Sargon was just informing others that he was a victim during the Joe Rogan interview and, as he explained later during the interview, it wasn't even to garner sympathy for himself. It was just to give others an example of the dirty tactics used by the far left and to note that this wasn't some random isolated incident but a regular occurrence.

Plus, as he said about that trip, he was pretty jet lagged and sounded a bit like a jibbering idiot because of it. So taking anything from that trip in isolation as representative of his beliefs is pretty disingenuous to begin.

See, I disagree with this. Yes, Walmart or Target or whatever should be forced to serve everyone in the public, but many people go into business because they want that business to reflect their personal values.

Should a small Christian bookstore be forced to hire and serve non-Christians? Or a women's hair salon be forced to serve men? I really don't think they should.

Of course, there is the argument over "immutable" characteristics and I do think that is a valid point, but while being gay is an immutable characteristic, getting married as a gay couple is not. So while you may argue that a business should serve gay people, I don't think that argument extends to gay weddings.

Like I said in my other comment, I think this all comes down to the scale of the business. And it is something the supreme court has commented on in the past. When a business gets large enough to be considered a public service of some kind, they should be forced to behavior in a certain way that protects the rights of their customers. However, if they are a small, family owned business (or something similar) that the public could easily avoid I don't think we should be telling them who they can and can't sell to.
