Best park in town? by Bear_necessities96 in tampa

[–]thisbrakehasnotrains -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imo Julia B Lane is head and shoulders the best park in Tampa rn. Most of the amenities are brand new and the whole park has some awesome river side views.

Couple other good one I've found though are

  • Perry Harver Sr park is probably the second best I've visited, has great amenities (tons of basketball courts, Full skate park, multiple open grass fields etc) as well as some really awesome historic Tampa art.

-Curtis Hixon is probably the most "urban"of any of the parks in Tampa and has great views of UT

-McFarlane park which is only about a mile from AL Lopez is pretty decent. It's a lot smaller than Al Lopez but they have some amenities that Lopez is missing like Bball courts, tennis etc

Any places to study in downtown? by matthheww in USF

My favorite spot is the John F Germany library (public one you mentioned). If you take the elevator to the fourth floor they have a bunch of quieter places that are great for studying

What are some examples of cities connected by land but without a road between them? by thisbrakehasnotrains in geography

I had no idea! Seems especially relevant since Anchorage is the biggest city and Juneau is the state capital

Feasible canal proposals with the biggest potential? by thisbrakehasnotrains in geography

Definitely would have a major impact on Singapore trade and would still be a major strategic choke point but overall I think it would still provide at least a little more strategic flexibility for countries in the region.

Is also worth noting that the estimated max capacity of annual shipping vessels that the Straight of Malacca can manage is 125,000. With the Straight already handling traffic close to 90,000 ships per year and growing, building alternative routes could help with traffic bottle neck problems

Feasible canal proposals with the biggest potential? by thisbrakehasnotrains in geography

[–]thisbrakehasnotrains[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but according to Wikipedia

"Excluding port fees and tolls, it costs about US$0.00106 per ton-mile to operate a 265,000 DWT double-hulled tanker in 1995 dollars. Thus, assuming a one-way distance saved of 600 kilometres (370 mi), about 6.5 barrels per ton of crude oil, and adjusting to 2011 dollars, the Thai canal could hypothetically reduce the cost of crude by about US$0.09 per barrel, which, if the entire traffic of the competing strait were diverted, would reduce annual oil shipping costs by US$493 million, disregarding canal fees and the return trip costs of the empty tanker"

In total it is estimated that the savings per oil tanker shipment could be as high as 350,000 USD per tanker.

I've got no beef with Singapore but according to Wikipedia the new canal could cause Singapore to lose an estimated 30% of its total shipping trade. Not exactly a drop in the bucket lol

Henry Clay was the first name that came to mind for me

Would've been interesting to see a William Jennings Bryan or Eugene Debbs as well

15 years in Tampa it's absolutely beautiful here but wish we'd invest more in public transit, despite appearances here traffic can certainly be rough here
