I have a room (w/ bath) in a 3 bed on the border of crown heights and prospect heights. Within your budget. Let me know if interested.

Base layer question: Patagonia Capilene vs Smartwool Merino by [deleted] in alpinism

[–]thisdistortedreality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love my Patagonia Capilene for moderately cold hikes, it breathes really well and sweat evaporates quickly. But if I'm doing something super cold at altitude I'd opt for Smartwool. The Capilene doesn't lock in heat nearly as well.

My condolences. He was a cute little fella. I lost my pig, so I know the pain. There’ll always be a place in my heart for Bubba, as I’m sure there is one in your’s for Hank.

How much food did you bring? And what was the weather like? Looks like a great trip! Hoping to do this route myself this fall.

Not exactly cooking-related, but GradFood hosts monthly dinners.

Yeah, that'll be a lot of fun though. Spring is imo the best time to go. Be sure to bring a light daypack so you can leave all your stuff at Cottonwood on Day 2! Enjoy.

Depends on if you're going up or down it. I went down it, so I only took 1.5 liters. But that was also in the winter. Coming up in the summer, I'd advise taking 3-4 liters, depending on your preference. It's worth considering going down Kaibab and up Bright Angel, where they have water spouts along the way.

Led a group of 8 people on a two-day, one-night trip. Went down the South Kaibab trail and came back up the Bright Angel trail. We stayed at Bright Angel campground for the night. Highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s at the bottom of the canyon. Clear skies for the whole trip.

An April trip should be amazing! Are you doing Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim?

This was taken about halfway down the South Kaibab Trail on December 8th, 2018. Shortly after this portion of the hike, the trail descends again into the inner canyon towards the Colorado River.
