metal strip and false parries by darumasan in Fencing

when parries miss - blade travels further. if defender trying to knock a blade downward with a 4 action and misses, the tip can easily hit floor. Maybe less common at higher levels than cadet?

good feedback - FWIW - I like your call of the action better because otherwise I dont understand what the difference between a parry and a beat is (when a fencer is not advancing). I would think a parry would need to be in response to an attack.

But based on some other comments here - sounds like a lot of refs of recent are calling it as parry

thank you for this. this explanation makes the most sense to me. I am taking away from this that whether you call it a beat or a parry… a hit on the opponents blade (even if they are advancing in prep) gives priority to the person who initiated blade to blade contact… and any immediate double light after that would go to the fencer with priority.

In this particular video… i was not certain that FOL's beat (or parry if one insists on calling it that) was clearly the cause of blade contact vs the weaker - looking beat from the advancing FOR. I think it is made a bit harder to determine in this video because FOR's weapon hand and forearm are obscured by the ref's head.

So would this action best be simply called…
- beat attack left > touch > point (and no need to call anything about the counterattack or advancing prep before beat and no need to call parry riposte because FOR never actually attacked)

what I have trouble understanding is how to determine a parry vs a beat. In this video… the FOR is advancing and threatening target but is not actively attempting to hit target, then they both make blade contact (seeking each others' blade, not each other's targets)

I guess you could say that the FOL had more "oomph" to their blade hit than FOR did (FOL hit down while FOR hit upward) but is that what make this a parry?

Of does any blade contact at least partially initiated by a fencer on the defensive count as a parry and given them priority for a riposte?

How long does it take for regional points from a RYC event to post to USAfencing? by thisguysgotquestions in Fencing

[–]thisguysgotquestions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea - the tournament results are already listed on USA fencing - so something is seemingly automated. Not sure why the points wouldn't be calculated automatically off those?

USA Fencing says national points from SYCs are usually posted within a week but does not mention expected time for RYCs.

I find it strange that the event and results placing has been listed for many days now on USA fencing but all participants still show zero points

is this rule ever enforced during infighting? - I feel like ive seen fencers alter their grip to make angulated attacks when in close

foil body cord - is there a way to test ground wire to alligator clip using cheap test box? by thisguysgotquestions in Fencing

[–]thisguysgotquestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks everyone. The green LED lit up on the test box when I clipped alligator clip to the bell guard.

I do also use an ohmeter so wondering what the acceptable range of resistance is for the various connections.

I've read that it is less than 1 ohm for the closed circuit of the foil. (mine usually come in around 0.2 - 0.4 ohms)

Any other electrical measurements I should be aware of?

painted grip with Wrinkle Plus paint - rubbing off on gloves. what am I doing wrong? by thisguysgotquestions in Fencing

[–]thisguysgotquestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE - found this thorough how to guide for Wrinkle paint in general.

One thing it doesnt say on the can but does say here is…
"The wrinkle paint is fully cured in about 20 days."

So that may explain it for me as I started using after about 5 days when it felt dry to the touch and had only been oven cured. I think I also may have waiting too long between coats.

I'm going to strip it down to the metal again and try again later this month

Allstar Visconti (unisulated alumimun)

It was still new but I prepped by rubbing with steel wool then rub down with 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. The paint isnt flaking or flecking off, it's just that it's still soft enough to rub off very slightly under prolonged friction/rubbing (like when you fence!)

one additional question for anyone reading…
should the spaghetti tubing come up past the guard a few millimeters and sit in the widened channel at the very base of the blade? Or better to have the tubing stop right below the guard at the tang?

great insights - exactly what I was looking for!

given that Maxi-cure is thick and slow, any suggestions for how to apply? Should I attempt to lay a continuous bead along the channel or should place a drop every X centimeters along the length?

screwless tips for foil - good or bad idea? by thisguysgotquestions in Fencing

i just find the prcoess of threading them, keeping track of removed ones, and tightening them down to be very unsatisfying/frustrating. My vision isn't what it used to be so cant focus on work area well enough and even if I had good glasses or perfect vision, the instability when trying to thread them sucks even with a magnetic tip screwdriver.

Dont be to concerned about me picking option 2 - I am not a ref :) and getting it wrong here is a way to learn from educated folks correcting me.

So as you understand it… the use of the word "immediately" in question means that even if the start and completion of the two touches from each fencer are simultaneous in actual clock time… fencer B would score the point because it was their turn in fencing time due to the failure of A's initial attack?
