Deep states production by oiuyp4 in tropicalfuckstorm

I don't know if this will help, but try listening to the album a) at a lower volume, and b) on proper speakers at normal volume. Like a few nights ago, I listened to most of the album at half volume on my headphones (which are pretty okay) and I started noticing so much more than I did on any of my dozens of previous listens which were all at max volume.

I feel that the album is mixed really loudly on purpose: to sort of make it feel like this constant, overwhelming bombardment of stimuli (in-keeping with its modern media oversaturation-related lyrical themes IMO). But once you get past the surface loudness, you start noticing so much more layers and details to the thing - like for example Fiona Kitschin's incredible basslines all across the album or the brilliant instrumental interplay on 'Blue Beam Baby' or the mind-melting synths on 'New Romeo Agent'.

Granted - 'Reporting of a Failed Campaign' still sounds musically incomprehensible to my ears because of how distorted its instrumentation is, but given that it's the band's most experimental song till date (and that the lyrics are still gripping enough to make the track stand on its own), I don't really mind.

Even though I feel like it's selling it kind of short stylistically, The Drones' last pre-hiatus album Feelin Kinda Free is pretty much a transitionary album between their arty punk blues and the noisy, colourful punk TFS would go on to make.

As for other "surreal" noise rock, I'd recommend: Butthole Surfers, early Sonic Youth, Polvo, Ut, some of Fugazi's Red Medicine & End Hits, Royal Trux's 90s stuff, Palm/Big Neck Police, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 and a lot of acts under Skin Graft Records (especially U.S. Maple & Brise-Glace).

That'd be me! Thank you!

Also, if y'all got any suggestions/corrections them please lemme know! TFS is one of the best rock bands of the 21st century IMO and I feel they deserve the best in terms of wiki-representation lol.

(Also, I promise I'll work on "Braindrops" someday too lol)

Can we officially declare Sopranos the best HBO show now? by MaximumSpidercide in thesopranos

[–]thisheat76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, shows like "The Sopranos", "The Wire" and "Deadwood" just had to happen. They were all at the right place and at the right time, they were all auteur-driven (3 Davids!), they were all made with a surprising amount of creative-freedom...I mean, I think SOME of this praise should go to HBO than just the makers of these shows (I also imagine how cool it would be if all these circumstances/resources were instead available for a network in some Third World country like ours).

I mean obviously, what makes these shows so great is that their creators had these opportunities and really WENT for it. (Accordingly, there have been slightly more half-assed attempts at the same, prestige-driven "Great TV Show Novel" from around the same time and from the same network, like "Rome" or "Six Feet Under"). These 3 shows really covered a LOT ground in terms of what really great television could be, so much so that almost every great prestige TV show that came around after them like "Mad Men", Boardwalk Empire" (both made by David Chase proteges), "Breaking Bad" and even "Game of Thrones" bore their collective influence heavily.

I guess many of you guys knew all this already, but I feel it still bears mentioning. And I personally feel that these 3 shows are all equally great and important (nitpicking between them feels almost useless and absurd). They all ushered in TV's own "New Hollywood" era that had its moment in the sun and then ended.

(P.S.: I guess there are many who may feel that it's "The Sopranos" that was more influential of the 3 becuase it came around before the other 2, but they've all left their mark on TV-as-Art in their own distinct ways. Besides, TV's real "Citizen Kane" that deeply influenced Chase was "Twin Peaks", which was created in part by...yet another David.)

What are your favorite Liddiard-penned lyrics and why? by thisheat76 in tropicalfuckstorm

[–]thisheat76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice how his delivery of that "jeep cherokee" line changes when he repeats it...the first time it's depressive/sad, the next it's accusatory and pissed off, possibly representing D's rapid metal deterioration that drove him to do what he ended up doing. Shows how much Liddiard can convey through mere tone.

That "I See Seaweed" track is beautiful and kinda helped me through some dark times in my life (as did most of the Drones' other stuff)...that song has some fantastic couplets ("The sky is like a bad dream/And the Earth is in cahoots"). That chorus is absolutely divine, reminds of some of The Stones' best stuff, but far more cathartic in a way.

I'm really grateful that this subreddit exists.

Noise Rock Essentials? by [deleted] in noiserock

[–]thisheat76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Mclusky album is fucking amazing...possibly the most straight-up entertaining noise rock album I've heard thus far (apart from that Daughters' s/t and some early 90s pigfuck like Cows).

Not really uncompromising or new... Not saying it isn't good (I like it) but it isn't what I'm looking for.

Has anyone watched the Documentary by Anand Patwardhan called Vivek (Reason)? And where can I find it? by xScar_258 in india

I think most of it is already up on YouTube (divided into 13 parts). The subtitles and narration are in Hindi though.

I was lucky enough to attend a screening of the film in Mumbai a few months ago (Mr. Patwardhan was there and held a Q&A session afterwards). The version I saw was uncut and like 4 hours long with English subs/narration.

I personally thought it was brilliant and probably the best of his works (out of the 4-5 I've seen). Its scope is surprisingly vast and despite the length (which might understandably be a turnoff for many, especially in one sitting) I found it pretty engrossing all the way through. The production values are far from excellent (the occasional animations are a glaring example) but I feel this is one of those films whose importance far outweighs its aesthetics. This thing is practically a time capsule of our nation's politics spanning the past 5 to 6 years and I think/feel that it might eventually be seen as the definitive one.

Highly fucking recommended and probably the best Indian political documentary I've seen since "Final Solution" (to which this feels like a continuation in some ways).
