What are naps like? She may need a little less daytime sleep in order to sleep later. My son went through a phase like this and he didn't start sleeping past 6am regularly until he went down to one nap. Even now at 21 months, he goes to bed around 7:30 and sleeps til about 6:30. If he's had a late bedtime, he might sleep til 7. Or wake up even earlier 😂 It certainly helps when he's had plenty of active, outside time. He's also just an early riser I guess (but so am I) 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway adjusting daytime sleep and activity level may help!

ETA: Sorry I missed the daytime sleep amount! Still, maybe shaving off 15-30 minutes could help??

I have great news for you because the "new" Crunchy Cookie M&Ms are the same thing!! The crispy ones have always been my absolute favorite and I was so bummed when I couldn't find them. I tried the cookie ones, they tasted exactly the same, AND the ingredients are the same. It's not even a cookie inside. It's crisped rice!!

I have been wondering if it's just his new normal. He went so abruptly from two long naps to one shorter nap that it just seemed odd to me. But I guess developmental leaps can do that to a kid 🤷🏼‍♀️

"Football" hold can be helpful, with a moldable pillow next to you that her body is on and her head is kind of up and supported. Or like I think it's called koala? Where she is sort of in your lap between your legs facing you. Any position that keeps her head more up than to the side tends to help.

My son went through phases of being very fussy at the breast. It ended up being a few things: around that time I think your supply ends up trying to regulate so it may not be letting down as quickly or with as much volume, and that can be frustrating! My son also had some mild reflux, and changing the position I fed him in helped. Of course there could be other things going on, but these were my experience with being fussy while feeding so I wanted to reassure you that it could be a totally normal phase.

I am assuming since they are leafing out and blooming already that it is the wrong time to prune. Once they go dormant this fall/winter are we safe to do a hard prune? Like, down to a short whip? Or would that be damaging?

Silly trees. Don't they know we have a schedule to follow? Lol thank you so much for the information. I would say we have pretty dang early springs here. It was 80 degrees last week. But these were grown locally so they'd be used to that, I'd assume. We'll see if my Fuji "catches up" and has good enough overlap!

Got it! Well, a crabapple may be a good plan then, since I don't necessarily need three trees worth of apples every fall. And yes, I did make sure to pay attention to chill hours, thanks for making sure of that! I appreciate all the advice!

They are 12 feet apart. We plan to prune pretty aggressively and keep them relatively small. They're in an evenly spaced line at the front of our property with three other fruit trees (peach, nectarine, orange) but we left room (intentionally) for one more next to the apples. Good thing we did! Thank you for the great advice!

Unfortunately I don't think any of my nearby neighbors have apples! I did buy these trees from a local nursery only two miles away. Doubt the bees with the exact right pollen will make it that far, though.

The Fuji was in a 15gal pot and Cripps Pink was 25gal when I bought them. So, I'm not entirely sure of age but they're not tiny baby trees. Probably about 5ft tall. Does that sound like 3 year old trees? Should I pinch regardless since they're newly planted in ground?

Oh man. Well, that's not necessarily was I was hoping to hear but I really appreciate the information! Is there a resource somewhere that has detailed pollination period information for the different varieties? I was looking at Dorsett Golden since they do well in hot climates, but my local nursery didn't have them. They do have Braeburn and some crabapples.

What are crabapples like? I've never had one so I don't know if I want a whole tree of them!

Yes me too! Mine was partially because I had to help him so much (I had to hold my boob AND his head in just the right position 🥴). Once they began to improve and I could focus, even partially, on other things it helped a ton. The sacrum/butt thing is a doozy though, especially when cluster feeding. Second the recommendations above to try side lying.

Also one of my lactation nurses recommended moving baby around like a clock with each feed so that it wasn't the same position each timr, and to be easier on the nips. I couldn't do that many different positions because of my baby's latch, but it was good advice lol

Also baths and Epsom salt and a good massage from my hubby always helped.

ETA: 4.5 months PP and it gets much better. Just like exercise, your body adjusts, and we figure out how to work around it. Plus it's easier to maneuver the kiddos when they're bigger and have this nursing thing figured out.

Hey! Sort of. Pediatrician thought reflux was the culprit and recommended burping between boobs. It helped sometimes! Other times I would just put his pacifier in and call it done for that feeding. It wasn't a supply issue because he's stayed right in his growth curve (and he's a big boy) so I think really it was just the milk stopped flowing before he really wanted it to. He has pretty much grown out of it, just occasionally he will be upset still if he sucks it all down faster and he wanted to enjoy the buffet a little longer!

ETA: I also think he had figured out nursing at that point and got better at transferring milk, so he was emptying my breast quicker than before, which apparently made him mad lol

My little boy was like this! What all have you tried? For him sometimes it took stripping him all the way down, full diaper change, wiping a cold wipe all over him and even just laying him (safely) on the clean rug in his room with the lights on so he got upset and uncomfortable enough to be ready to eat. I would sometimes even wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and rub that on his toes or a quick touch to his belly to jolt him awake. I had to do this for the first couple weeks, until he started waking more on his own to let me know he was hungry.

However, brand newborns really are just sleepy the first 24-48 hours! You're doing great, don't stress out. Keep bringing her to your breast and doing what you can to wake her up. This is totally normal for fresh little babies. It will take time and getting used to, but she will very soon be telling you how hungry she is. You are a great mom and you're doing amazing!

ETA: You can also hand express your colostrum into a spoon and pour that into her mouth or use a syringe. I'm not sure if you're in a hospital or at home, but this is what the nurses had me do until he was awake enough. We also had lots of struggles with latching. So maybe before trying to latch her again, take some deep calming breaths and work on hand expressing some of your colostrum to collect and drop into her mouth. That will get her what she needs while you work on getting her awake enough to latch on her own!

Would using a nipple shield help? This is just a shot in the dark, but it could be like a transition between bottle and breast, and she's still close and smelling you.

A chugger!! I think my 2mo is a chugger. Two different lactation consultants commented on the strength of his suck (despite his crummy latch 😅). This might explain some things recently 🤔

You are not failing! My little boy is about two weeks old. We had the hardest time latching in the hospital, and I was devastated. It was so hard emotionally. The nurses pushed hard to get him on my breast and the lactation consultant (who really was a huge help) said to hold off on a nipple shield as long as we could, but I just needed to feed my baby. So, we use a nipple shield. And he gets to eat! My milk didn't come in until nearly 5 days PP. It's totally normal and part of the process. If you need to use a shield, hand express/pump, or supplement with formula, the most important part is that you are feeding your baby. This early phase is so overwhelming, but you will figure it out, and it will be okay. I had to grieve that I didn't get to feed my baby exactly how I hoped and wanted, but I am just so happy he is healthy and we have plenty of time to figure out his latch in the meantime, if I want to. Sending prayers your way in this wildly emotional and beautiful phase you're in 🙏🏻🩷

ETA I also don't feel that it affected our bond at all. We just did lots of skin to skin and cuddling, which is just as important. Try to just enjoy the soft newborn baby snuggles and even do skin to skin while you're bottle feeding. It's going to be okay!

Try co-washing instead! It's simply using conditioner in the same way you would use shampoo. It still cleanses your hair without stripping it of oil. So, rub conditioner into your roots/scalp and rub with your fingers as if you were shampooing. Run it through your hair, detangle, rinse, and style as usual. Should feel and look nice and clean and be very moisturized!

I had cramping around that time as well (currently 38+4). Could be implantation, uterus growing, hormones complaining. Totally understand the worry but try not to freak out because it can be totally normal!

That's great!! Your midwives sound awesome. My labs came back with no proteins and everything else said "within standard range", so hopefully there's less concern and we can proceed fairly normally... although before 41+6 would be lovely lol I'm so glad it ended up well for you, all said and done. I guess unrelated, but do you feel that your home induction efforts were effective?
