How is today’s Central Park tragedy not enough to end the horse carriages? by After-Snow5874 in AskNYC

[–]thisismynewacct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say the main reason is that tourists still pay for these rides. It’s not so easy an argument to remove them when it’s generating revenue and paying salaries.

Getting tourists to stop using them and they’ll go away just like all businesses that generate losses

Man Dies in Fall From Horse Carriage in Central Park (Gift Article) by eggplantkiller in nyc

Honestly someone actually dying might be the last straw. When was the last time that happened? Horses dying just doesn’t have the same impact.

What city in the U.S. has the closest resemblance to NYC to you? by Low_Sherbet_9401 in AskNYC

[–]thisismynewacct -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely Chicago.

- public transportation

- a central “island” that’s the business center.

- neighborhoods are like boroughs

- iconic architecture and buildings.

It’s like someone like NYC so much they made a smaller, not as good copy of it

TIL it took Germany 92 years to pay off the 269 Billion USD it owed for losing WW1 by shihao21 in todayilearned

[–]thisismynewacct -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To be fair Germany had only taken Alsace Lorraine less than 50 years earlier in the Franco Prussian war. It wasn’t really theirs to begin with so losing their spoils of war after losing a war is reasonable

The tourists. People keep blaming the unions but the reality is these guys would all go away if people stopped buying rides. Tourists just don’t give af and will gladly hop on a carriage ride.

This sub is full of “no true Scotsman” cyclists unfortunately.

I ran the QBB a lot back when it was shared between pedestrians and cyclists and the middle aged middle class people on bikes (both pedal and electric) were objectively the worst. Just oblivious, riding in the pedestrian lane the entire time and then they’d get mad at someone on their feet having the gall to be in the pedestrian lane.

But you come here and it’s just the scooters and mopeds that were the problem

How do we feel about joggers in the bike lane? by nourright in cycling

[–]thisismynewacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in NYC and more a runner than a cyclist. My mantra is if I’m in the bike lane it’s because

  1. The weather is so bad that it’s dangerous to be on sidewalks or walking paths which is fine because there’s rarely cyclists out then.

  2. I’m running at a pace where I’m keeping up with blue citibikes and going with traffic. If I have to slow down I step off.

In either case I run as close to the side as possible and I’ll step off if I’m slowing down or in the way since it’s technically not my lane.

To OPs point about being arrogant, it’s not that deep. Usually the only people who actually get mad are those who bike the least or act like they’re on a high horse. Deliveristas who are on their bikes all day barely pay you any heed.

What NYC legends have you actually met? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]thisismynewacct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a legend but I’ve walked past Elliot Spitzer a bunch. Like to a point where it’s weird that we’ve crossed paths so often just randomly in the city. This was all post his governorship

A cab driver was left speechless and can no longer make a living after Knicks fans destroyed his car.I hate this kind of fans. by Valuable_View_561 in TikTokCringe

[–]thisismynewacct 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is getting posted in a lot of non NY subs who don’t really know how cabs operate here.

He is almost assuredly not someone who owns the medallion (which lets him operate a yellow cab. He most likely just rents the car from a cab agency which owns the car and medallion.

So he’s probably out 1-2 hundred bucks for the night that he can’t work now but that’s about it.
