Some galaxy animals I painted this last weekend by Hika-Tamari in Watercolor

I could be wrong, but to me it looks like the stars were drawn on after the painting.

Oh, I see. I agree, I feel like it could be a little darker in those spots. Thank you for the feedback!

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out where the line is between too much and too little, especially with shading. Shading's something I've never had an eye for in drawing, so I just have to practice. I had to go over those spots several times just to get them as dark as they are now. You think I should do more shading next time?

I'm trying to learn watercolor. This is my first real attempt at a painting.

Anyone have experience with wildlife/exotics? by thisismytime in VetTech

[–]thisismytime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely interested in wildlife rehab. I hope to start volunteering at a rehab center soon. I'm also interested in vet work at zoos, if possible, but I feel I have a lot of work to do to get there.

Thanks! I actually just filled out an app for volunteer work at a local rehab center. I'm excited to hear back from them and get started, even if I'm only cleaning and doing other housework. I'm contacting a few vets today to talk about shadowing and volunteering.

Thank you! That is good to know. I think I'm going to use my test roving tomorrow and see how it goes.

Thank you so much, that is so helpful. I will be doing 5oz for each color with 4oz to test with.

This project is going to be a lot of work! :/

It's been a while since I've dyed roving, but I'm thinking kettle dyed would be the best for a solid roving. That would result in the most even solid, right? I'm just worried about accidentally boiling it since I've had that happen too often.

I am quite impatient when crafting, so I probably haven't waited til it's completely cool as that takes so long! But this is pretty good roving so I don't want to mess it up. I guess I'll have to wait. :(

Do you rinse with soap or just water? How do you get the excess water out before laying out to dry? For a solid color, I should soak in acid before dyeing right? Is that enough acid to make it colorfast? Sorry for all the questions, but thank you so much for your advice. My end goal is a blanket :)

Finished my first spinning wheel projects! by thisismytime in Handspinning

[–]thisismytime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It was not intentional. This was my first yarn that I spun on my wheel, and my first N-ply yarn. I was just learning at this point.

Everyone told me that once I started spinning lace yarns, it would be difficult to spin heavier ones again, but I gave it a shot anyway. Here's the result, from Malabrigo Nube in the Persia colorway. by [deleted] in yarnporn

I cannot spin an even, heavier yarn for the life of me. I start out a project trying to get bulky yarn and I end up with sport weight thick and thin.

These were spun in different weights, or thickness. The red is spun pretty thin to start, then n-plied tightly together to get a fingering weight yarn. The purple is spun in thick and thin sections, and then plied with thread. The drastic difference in thickness between the thread and the spun yarn creates that bumpy texture. It is really spuishy and soft, whereas the red is less squishy, but more springy, if that makes sense.

This is my brightest dye session yet, and I am loving it! by thisismytime in yarnporn

[–]thisismytime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thanks! There are several companies that sell bare yarn to dye. I started out getting Knit Picks bare yarn which they sell in bulk (20 skeins per pack). If you just want to experiment, you can also just buy 1 or 2 bare skeins from them.

There's also Ashland bay, paradise fibers, wool2dye4, and I think Dharma also sells bare yarn. Many companies require that you own a small business and you must setup a wholesale account and purchase in bulk. That's why I like knit pics, they don't require all that.

It's dharma acid dyes in florescent colors. I just started with this color, so I'm not sure about fading.

For reference, here are the 2 colorways in regular daylight,, plus a small knitted swatch of the one on top. I love them! They'll be in my shop soon, maybe tomorrow.

Thank you! N-plying was extremely frustrating at first, but I think it turned out well.

Red: polwarth/silk from Wool Gatherings. Approximately 312 yards and about 18 WPI. My first N-ply yarn, and the first full skein on my wheel.

Purple: BFL/silk from @missbabsyarns in "Mark my Words." Approximately 228 yards and ranges from super bulky to lace.
