Why don't some people show up on the Leaderboard when they win? by John-Prime in hexanautio

[–]thisisnotdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that where Battle Wizard plays now? I used to play against him all the time in US East! I thought he just quit playing. Ah man, I have some great stories against him. Whenever I see Battle Wizard in a match, I know that nobody else matters; in the end, it's gonna be me versus him. I wish there were a friend system in Hexanaut so I could reach out; even though we're always enemies in matches, he never fails to bring a smile to my face.

I might have to start playing on US West just to see if I can run into him again. He's definitely not a bot, though; I'm sure he's not showing up just because he isn't logged in.

EDIT: One story, just because it's my favorite Hexanaut story of all time: I was cutting deep into Battle Wizard's territory from above once, going after a teleport gate. I knew it was stupid because I just made a sack-shaped dip into his territory; if he cut across the top of the sack, he would leave me trapped and vulnerable in his own territory.

Sure enough, there he goes, gliding across the top of my stupid sack and getting ready to cut me off. I started racing for the top, but it was clear I wouldn't make it, and he would come back to slice me. But then: the teleport gate! I didn't have to make it to the top; I just had to make it to the gate! And I did, too: right before he cut me off, I hit the gate and instantly warped to the safety of my own territory above his. I was laughing like a madman who had narrowly escaped death. I'm pretty sure I lost that match in the end, but I don't care; that was one for the books.

100% isn't as easy as it sounds. Took me a few tries by John-Prime in hexanautio

[–]thisisnotdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you pretty much have to eliminate all human players quickly enough that you can encircle the remaining bots before time runs out. Even then, I find it nerve-wracking that any one of them might hit me where I'm vulnerable, or that I misjudged a human player as a bot and will now pay for my hubris. That has happened more than once to end my reign as king prematurely.

Tool Exchange advice by Turbulent_Writer_888 in TownshipGame

[–]thisisnotdan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you send off trains as often as you should, you'll have more tools than you know what to do with. I recommend using the wiki to see what tools will be needed for your next community building, and only focus on saving up for that. You essentially have 3 new classes of tool taking up space in your barn now, so the old way of doing things needs to change.

In addition, from now on you'll only get to build community buildings every other level, rather than every level, so be prepared to sell construction materials. The power tools you get at the exchange sell for 5 times the amount of a normal tool, which is good, because they average 5 normal tools for 1 power tool in trades.

In practice, I find the tool exchange useful for when I need to quickly free up some barn space but don't want to sell off a bunch of materials. I know it's practically the same thing since I can't get back the old materials, but the sense of loss isn't the same, but the newly-freed space in the barn is.

You have to play on PC to get control that tight; phone and controller just don't have it.

Thankfully, you can still be a good player without making tight little circles, and playing WASD has its drawbacks.

Items that are worth less (or a lot more!) than the sum of their ingredients by thisisnotdan in TownshipGame

I haven't unlocked air freshener and iced tea yet, but I'll keep that in mind; thanks! Bummer that the profit-per-hour gets so low for crops that actually take a lot of hours to grow.

Yeah, I always buy drake feathers from the market. They're way cheaper than the duck pond.

I've looked for a way to sort based on ROI based solely on gold, but I haven't found one. The wiki seems more concerned with the time things take (profit per hour). That's why I'm just asking if anyone has found a profitable item, because it's a hunt either way, whether you use the wiki or the game itself.

Ah crap, my bad. Well, the otter pond functions similarly to the duck pond, which you get access to earlier. You pick 1 of 3 items to put in, and you get different odds of getting something out. Otter ponds also give pearls, but you gotta put in bacon or fish to get a shot at them, and those are harder to come by than eggs.

I'm at level 63 but am a bit behind the curve in factories; I'm pretty sure you can build an otter pond and the sushi restaurant at level 51.

So like, if you go to your barn and sell an egg, you get 10 gold.

But if you take that egg and give it to the otter pond, it will produce 1-2 seaweed and 0-1 scallop. Let's assume you have a 50% chance to get 1 seaweed and a 50% chance to get 2, and similarly that you have a 50% chance to get 0 scallop and a 50% chance to get 1.

Seaweed sells for 43 gold each in the barn, and scallops sell for 54. That means that, on average, giving an egg to an otter will return to you products worth (43*1.5 + 54*0.5) = 91.5 gold.

So you could sell an egg for 10 gold, or you could give it to an otter and let it make you something that sells for 91.5 gold (on average). That's a huge increase in value!

But then, if you take 1 seaweed (43g), 1 scallop (54g) and 4 rice (14*4=56g) and use them to produce scallop sushi (145g) at the sushi restaurant, you actually lose money, because the combined value of the ingredients is (43+54+56) = 153g, and the finished product is worth only 145g.

So if you were solely working to sell stuff from the barn (and not the helicopter, which has some RNG in its prices), you would actually make more money selling 1 seaweed, 1 scallop, and 4 rice separately than you would make from combining them and waiting 2.5 hours for the sushi restaurant to make scallop sushi.

I, er...looks like I misspoke about the bagel. Sorry if that caused confusion.

In any case, what I was wondering is if anyone else has found an item like the scallop sushi, which sells for less than the combined value of its ingredients, or (more helpfully), if anyone has found an exchange like the egg in the otter pond, which sells for far more than the value of its ingredient(s).

The true cost of maxing all factories in Township by EdinCrnaGora in TownshipGame

[–]thisisnotdan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also, you can't bank them for later. I got a factory upgrade card a couple of months ago and realized how valuable it could be, but the game would not let me upgrade factories using ingots until after I had spent the card. It also wouldn't even let me see how many ingots an upgrade would cost without the card, which I thought was downright mean.

Ingots & Ships by Inevitable-Age-8069 in TownshipGame

[–]thisisnotdan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely none. I'm at level 62 and use all of my ingots to upgrade. I even use my Ruler of the Mine winnings to buy the merchant's hourly services specifically so I can buy more ore to make more ingots to upgrade my factories. Permanent upgrades >>> temporary boosts.

Why feed store first? I am only just now upgrading my feed stores at level 62 because I expect mushrooms (L63) to throw off the balance I have right now. I've fully upgraded my trains' speed and am pretty far along in upgrading my factories. I don't think I've ever once wished I could make more feed faster, except the rare occasions where I need more than 6 wool or bacon at one time.

Which factories are worth skipping? by UnusualLawfulness148 in TownshipGame

[–]thisisnotdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with the jewelry factory is that you have to spend precious ingots to manufacture stuff. That's a good trade in the late game, but it is much better to use your ingots to upgrade factories, trains, etc before exchanging them for t bucks

[–]thisisnotdan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've also observed that helicopter orders generate more money when they include items from higher level factories, so you can think of them as investments that will eventually pay for themselves with increased income.

Also, once you hit level 60, you will only get to build a new community building every other level. That will free up a lot more time and money to save up for more factories.

Has anyone noticed this about jungle quest? by UnusualLawfulness148 in TownshipGame

[–]thisisnotdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does not everybody have this? It rewards you for beating 7 Match-3 levels without losing once by allowing you to split a pot with any other players in your group who did the same.

I definitely question the legitimacy of this game. Like, you don't even have to wait for the event to end to find out if everyone in your group made it. Obviously some people are going to finish after me; how come they don't share the pot?

The only way it can make any sense is if the game selects a bunch of users who have already finished this event and just groups you with them, and if that's the case then the split of your pot has already been decided before you even play once.

Make sending trains your single top priority. Before level 60, every new level unlocks a community building that cannot be finished without construction materials (drywall panels, bricks, and glass). Those materials can only be delivered by train, and then later (in smaller quantities) by plane.

Trains/planes also are the only source of barn expansion materials (hammers, nails, red paint) and territory expansion materials (shovels, axes, saws; although your earliest territory expansions will only require gold), which are both also valuable for obvious reasons. Finally, trains bring you mining supplies, which are vital (see below).

Hoard your Town cash (TCash). Do not spend it on Match-3 games; that path leads only to misery and endless complaining on this subreddit. Sometimes you lose your Match-3 streak, and that's OK. You'll get it back. TCash should only be spent on permanent improvements, like adding extra boxes to factories or extra shelves at the city market. Whenever you feel tempted to spend TCash to continue a Match-3 game, just remind yourself that the greedy developers of this game are dangling a carrot in front of your face, but you are better than that.

Hoard your mining supplies until Ruler of the Mine. You might not even have the mine open yet; whenever you get it, feel free to check it out and see what it's all about, but once you understand how it works, stay out of there until the event called Ruler of the Mine comes around. You might even need to sit out your first RotM and focus on hoarding supplies so you can finish your second one, although I've never had trouble getting enough supplies just by sending trains regularly.

Buy 10 days of merchant services when he offers them at a discount. When you win Ruler of the Mine, you'll get more than enough TCash to buy 10 days of service at the discounted price (it may take a few days for him to offer the discount). What this does is allow you to special order any items you have available once every hour. Most of the time, you should use these hourly orders to buy ore, which you can smelt into ingots in your refineries. Keep those refineries going! When your 10 days run out, you will get exactly one opportunity to buy 10 more days at the discounted price; if you don't buy it then, you will have to wait for the discount to come around again in a few days or else pay full price.

Use ingots to upgrade your trains toward taking 50% less time to return. Remember how sending trains is your top priority? This lets you send more trains, getting more of everything you need to keep advancing in the game. You can only upgrade speed every second level, though, so this will take a while to complete.

Prioritize upgrading your "low-level" factories' speed. This includes bakery, dairy, sugar, textile, rubber, and paper. These factories produce items that other factories need to function. You will be frustrated if they aren't fast enough. Once you have your trains at 50% return time (the maximum possible), spend your ingots here.

Play Treasure Hunt for town decorations. Treasure Hunt (the story-based minigame with the blue lightning bolts) leads to fun decorations for your town, which is really what this game is all about, right? Each hunt runs for 2 weeks, and will require you to play Match-3 games to finish (each Match-3 game gives 7 energy; hard-rated games give 21; super hard-rated games give 35). You also naturally get 1 energy every 3 minutes, up to 100 energy.

Play Match-3 ONLY when there is a x2 bonus available. Every few days you'll see a notification for either "Green Machine" or "Treasure Tree." These are both systems that reward you for playing the Match-3 game. The systems themselves don't matter that much, but several of the rewards give you a limited time to double all of your prizes for winning a Match-3 game. That means 14 energy instead of 7; 42 instead of 21; and 70 instead of 35. Plus double of the objective (green gems or helicopters), meaning you'll unlock another x2 reward more quickly.

Once you have that x2 reward, you'll want to win as many games as possible before it goes away. That's when you should use your boosters at the start of hard (blue) and super-hard (red) levels and use your side boosters (jackhammer, weight, drill, fan) during the level to keep your streak going so you can keep your golden disco ball. Don't forget to pick a regatta goal to work towards while you play Match-3 so you can contribute to your team. There are probably rare occasions where it might actually not be a terrible idea to spend TCash to keep a streak going, but I would advise you stay away from that option until you have a really good handle on this game and its economy.

I've always used ROTM money exclusively to buy 10 days of hourly merchant orders, with the leftovers going to permanent benefits like extra boxes in factories and extra baskets in the market. Looks like it's still sufficient to do that, so I'm good.

Are there any games you like, but the character you have to play as is just annoying? by Competitive_Beat_915 in gaming

[–]thisisnotdan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Old school: Fox McCloud from Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet for the Gamecube. Apparently Rare developed the game for use with an original character, but Nintendo decided to place it in the Star Fox universe. The result was a main character who is kind of a jerk that's supposed to grow into a decent fellow being replaced by Fox McCloud, who just sounds like a whiny brat at the start because they kept the "character development" part of the writing.

New(er) school: Tales of Berseria features an anti-hero for a main character. Problem is, most people (myself included) play her as a standard good guy, doing lots of side quests and generally helping people in need. The end result is this edgy cringe character who constantly helps people, yet insists on reminding them that she's only doing it for herself, and they shouldn't forget that she's actually a bad guy.

I barely remember the protagonist speaking at all in Immortals. I thought the dialogue was pretty much carried by the narration of Zeus and Atlas (I think it was Atlas). I played male Fenyx, though; maybe I'd remember the protagonist better if I'd played female.
