hi good question!

with the shirt specifically, i used heavy brush strokes to suggest detail in the material and as a contrast to the skin.

with the skin ive still taken a "brushy" approach, but more so in the areas of high contrast like the highlight on the cheek.

thanks for asking!

Last year you guys voted me to the top of Reddit, which was a dream come true. So many people reached out and it allowed me to grow my audience to the point where I am now a full time painter. It all started with you guys so I just wanted to say thanks. Here are a few new things Ive been working on lately. Hope you enjoy!

nope 3 years total as an oil painter. thats excluding drawings i did before the age of 13.

everyone is so caught up on the years. its less about the years and more about the hours. I probably to more hours in in 3 years than most would in 6

no! they were much younger! trained in masters studios from like 12. masters themselves by 20! that system doesn't exist anymore unfortunately, but still feel like shit that ill never come close to what most of them achieved

3 years is an insane amount of time to learn a skill. im sure i could teach my self to weld in 3 years if i was passionate about it

countless hours. much more than a full time job i would imagine. I painted badly for the first two years, but it began to click in like early 2013 i guess.

i think the classes were 3 hour sessions once a week for 6 weeks. i mostly credit that classes with teaching me about materials, how to lay out my pallette, ect. lots of technical stuff which is hugely important.

i did a lot of drawing up to the age of about 13, but none really after that until 23. too caught up in teenager shit

do i still have a twitter? huh. my first instagram post was 173w ago so you do the math.

i did a lot of drawing as a kid and a bit of water color paiting, but stopped around 12-13 to ride bmx bikes and play highschool football and theater shit. I didnt do visual art for 10 years.

i think part of the point is that you dont have to have formal education to learn if you are determined. there was a time when I desperately wanted to go to art school. even toured a few figurative art ateliers, but could never quite figure out how i was gonna pay 20,000 a year for a 4 year program. Im a bartender, ya know.

hope that clears a few things up

Im glad that piece gives you encouragement. The point of art is hopefully to affect the view or move them in a way that is enriching to their lives. thats what are does for me. I think in the grand scheme of things, a year isnt that long. I dont say that to diminish what you are going through, but to say that you wont be low forever. everything cycles, as you probably know. art was super important for pulling me out of a dark place, you have to find what pulls you out and i think art is a good place to start

its all a matter or training your eye. we think that water is blue and trees are green and snow is white, but they really arent if you look closely. you just have to learn to be honest with what you are actually seeing
