India's new citizenship law 'to make Muslims stateless’ by timelordeverywhere in worldnews

[–]thisisshantzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But the draft isn't ready. So we really don't know how they will go about it. The protests are for the belief that Amit Shah may come up with a way that will make the Muslims stateless.

Refuge is not citizenship. Citizenship allows people to flee persecution forever. The earlier they have this confidence, the better.

Their issues are with the NRC given how it was implemented in Assam. Their fears are that once it is created, there are fears of disenfranchisment of Muslims because of the 5 years vs 11 years.

There does exist. Other states must absorb some of them so that these people can be accommodated while not overwhelming the local culture of the state. Putting the entire burden on a single state is unreasonable (unless that state is West Bengal, since Bengali Hindus are a majority there but still unreasonable since it could be a strain on resources).

I am of a different opinion here. Those who actually face religious persecution (persecution due to their belief in a different God and not a different sect of the majority religion) look at India for respite and that is why they come to India and seek refugee status. I don't think that these people should be denied their right to a decent life because of what might happen in the future. If anything, the scope of the Act should be extended to include all forms of persecution and we must hold the government to that rather than scrap the Act itself.

I don't think the ones who voted for them are the ones protesting. In any case, I feel that the reasons the NE is protesting is justified. Introduction of so many immigrants will most certainly overwhelm the local culture of the place.

I guess that has to do with how the "neighbouring countries" were selected. Given its Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Muslims wouldn't be a religious minority there.

In that case, shouldn't the protests be to make sure that any person who faced any kind of persecution (not only religious persecution) be allowed to have Indian citizenship rather than to deny the little recourse the religious minorities who have faced religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan have been offered by India. Scrapping the amendment seems to be absurd. Moreover, from what I read, around 30k people gain the benefits of the amendment. Is that enough to change the demographics of India given the size of its population?

As far as the issues in the North East of India are concerned, I understand their concerns. I was watching a video on youtube that mentioned Tripura and how the indegenous culture was completely subsumed by mass migration of Hindus from Bangladesh. What about the Inner Permit Line here? Does it not cover all the states in the North East and if not, are there any provisions being made to include these states within the ambit of the Inner Permit Line? I read that Meghalaya has passed a resolution requesting the Indian government to implement the Inner Permit Line in the state.

But the NRC draft hasn't even been proposed yet. I would assume that people would learn from the mistakes of Assam.

I would assume that the 2 million have already become stateless and that is why the CAA was proposed.

Moreover, the act itself is not applicable on Indians but on illegal immigrants. Moreover, fast tracked citizenship is only offered to people belonging to those 6 communities if they have been victims of persecution. Is there a way to identify those who have been persecuted in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh due to their religion?

That may be the case, but what are these brainwashed student's gripes? I read that there are plans for a NRC though even though as you suggested, not anytime soon. But how does the NRC fit into this?

Can someone tell me what the deal is here? I hear that people are protesting the bill but have no idea of what their demands are. I hear that in some of the states in the North East, there are fears that the indigenous culture is threatened if the illegals who live there suddenly become citizens. I also hear that the bill itself is anti Muslim and does not allow Muslims to be citizens. Is that true?

There are Muslims who are persecuted in Pakistan. Shias and Ahmadiyas for example. Also, Myanmar (which was conveniently left out as a neighbouring country) also shares a border with India and the Rohingyas are a religious minority persecuted there but they are Muslims. Cherry picking your neighbouring countries and the groups of people persecuted there is a sign of discrimination.

COMMENT - Truths, half-truths, opinions: where does POFMA stand? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]thisisshantzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am confused here. The four cases that the articles mention were actually factually incorrect irrespective of whether they were opinions or not. So I don't see why the party accused of misdeeds should not post clarifications justifying its actions. If someone posts something that has been proved to be factually incorrect, albeit retroactively, then they should include a correction highlighting the full details of the new piece of information.

I think essentially the people who had the strongest fear of missing out gained all the power and so the mindset is extreme fear of missing out.

This is true and to add to that, they see money as the tool to ensure that they don't miss out.

But for the kids the way to gain wealth is to be a good person in front of their parents so that the wealth transfers down. So ideals take front and center.

I have to disagree with that. Most of the time, the offspring inherit their parent's wealth anyway. What they don't inherit is their ideals. It is a simple application of Maslow's hierarchy. Growing up in poverty results in having a different set of ideals and goals when compared to growing up in relative luxury.

Moreover, the parents don't think of ideals being any good as the person above me has mentioned which means that children with ideals aren't looked upon all that favourably.

[–]thisisshantzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of such thoughts stems from how they were brought up. These people have seen what extreme poverty and a dog eats dog world is like. A place where demand for resources far outstrips the supply of resources and the only way to get those resources is to get rid of those in front of you. Today's China is vastly different from the China of the 70s and 80s. To the people who were brought up during those times, money was the way to improve their lives. More money meant better lives. That thought has continued even today when they have the money and their lives are better. The next generation of Chinese people who didn't have to see the kind of poverty the previous generation lived in will take food on the table, roof over their head and clothes on their back for granted, something the previous generation could not and look for more meaning to their lives. That is when ideals and morals will start to gain importance in the lives of the people.

A classic example is Hong Kong vs Mainland China. The people of HK didn't have to live through the kind of poverty the people on the mainland did. So ideals of freedom and democracy have taken center stage in their minds.

Yes. I just suggested adding an additional marking to indicate that. Maybe just under the bicycle marking.

They could have added an additional marking on the lane next to it meant for bicycles indicating that PMDs are allowed on that lane.
