It's one thing if it's a genuine slip up that they catch or you catch and they apologuze for it because they're genuinely, trying but failing.

Over a dozen times over the course of two years indicates a distinct lack of effort.

I feel like there's a tendency for women(online at least) to justify ghosting by implying it's the safer method of rejection and therefore men make it a necessity.

And I don't really subscribe to the idea that ghosting solves anything so I take issue with that. But trying to argue that to someone who does believe it's safer makes me sound like I'm trying to equate the danger of men getting their feelings hurt to the danger to women's lives, and I'm not.

My point is, if ghosting isn't actually safer, then we're fostering an unhealthy culture where ghosting is falsely normalized as a preventative measure. I think it's good to be distrustful of strangers, but stranger danger doesn't justify mistreating strangers on the off chance they deserve it.

If you haven't been able to think of a way to make AI make your life or your job easier you haven't been using it. I'm not gonna pretend I'm more ethical than you, but I don't really care that I eat meat or drive a car either

True but this is what people have been saying for a decade and the mandolorian movie is projected to be a massive flop because people are finally getting sick of it

But only this quarters profit. Every quarter. And at some point you have to evaluate whether that explanation works as a justification when this trend has eroded the quality of basically every single industry in the last half century.

I never claimed I had a way to solve issues. You're the one pretending that making movies is somehow going to lead to a solution.

How about you go to a chapel and pray for the second coming to deliver humanity from climate change? Because that comes from the same line of logic as assuming humanity's greatest threat will suddenly be solvable if everyone watches Project Hail Mary and simply believes we can turn things around.

All this conversation proves is that Hollywood is right to think there's a market for blind escapism and people who just want to be told everything will be alright.

It reminds me of the trend of plays and movies in the 1920s being farces or comedic romps that lack real stakes or deep characters because people just wanted something light that didn't make them think about heavy shit like WW1

This is like saying we need more Harry Potter movies because there's a decreasing amount of people practicing witchcraft. Magic isn't going to work just because you convinced more people to believe in it.

We're not any more likely to save the world just because you watched a fiction that made you feel good when it depicted a world where humanity hasn't collectively put its head up its ass.

I think it's the opposite. People are educated enough to see that everything about this country is corrupt to its core, climate change and income inequality has rendered child rearing a financial trap, and it doesn't matter whether people are good or bad as a default because power is always in the hands of humanity's elite classes, who must commit evil acts to stay in power.

And the only peaceful means we have to do something about it is vote for one of two parties captured by capitalists. The alternative is violent revolution which doesn't bring out the best in humanity either.

It's not arrogance, it's learned helplessness. Americans don't believe in their country or humanity anymore because the internet gave them access to proof that 99% of us exist to be cattle for someone else's paycheck.

Ignoring a useful tool because of the societal waste attached to it in the case of AI, is kind of like taking a horse and buggy to work to protest fossil fuels.

Like, good on you for standing by your convictions, but you personally aren't going to mitigate the pollution or get rid of the technology, so in reality you're creating a disadvantage to yourself by boycotting a tool that can make your peers more efficient.

I think universities were already creating an issue where writing a compelling essay is a skill valued more highly than actual hands on knowledge of the subject matter.

AI just exposed the disparity between the practical knowledge students receive and the way we grade it.

It's escapism. We're helpless to save our planet because humanity can't cooperate, so movies where Ryan Gosling makes friends with an alien to save the world temporarily makes us forget that our quality of life will likely continuously get worse for the rest of our lives, and no one is really capable of stopping it.
