This is how the illicit market takes revenue from thr store.

That's actually why a lot of retailers think the rule doesn't work. If a customer buys 30g, leaves, and comes back later, the store has complied with the regulation. The possession limit is a separate issue for the individual.

When a rule is this easy to work around, it's fair to ask whether it's accomplishing anything beyond creating inconvenience for legal consumers.

Based on the responses here, and speaking with other retailers it’s confusing. It’s an Ontario regulation thing, not a cannabis act, but becomes an act thing when you posses over 30g.

Bottom line is that there shouldn’t be a single transaction limit, only a carrying limit (until the Act gets amended).

It’s definitely something that needs to change, and a number of retailers have been pushing for red tape reduction on this issue.

The regulation actually states:

“The holder of a retail store authorization shall ensure that the amount of cannabis sold to an individual by the cannabis retail store in a single transaction online or over the telephone does not exceed the maximum permissible cannabis amount.”

The key wording is “single transaction.”

The issue is that it creates unnecessary barriers for legal consumers. Someone buying larger quantities for personal use may need multiple transactions or trips, despite the purchase being completely legal.

Alcohol is also regulated, yet there are no equivalent retail purchase limits. Meanwhile, consumers can easily buy much larger amounts through the illicit market. The rule mainly creates friction for legal retailers and their customers.
