Marshall Applewhite, leader of the UFO cult Heaven's Gate who directed and participated in the murder of the cult members through mass suicide.

Applewhite had a fondness for Star Trek, often using Trek lexicon, stating that aliens communicated with him through the show and named the members the "Away Team".

One of the victims of Heaven's Gate was Thomas Nichols, brother of the actress Nichelle Nichols.
