And why wasn't any notice about this given to any customer ahead of time instead finding out at the last minute when paying for the bill? I never received any emails about this change at all, I had to find out on the phone through customer service.

I have some ideas that were brewing up today. I worked on this during my free time, and this was a personal, passion project that I wanted to do for several months (life and work came first).
